ITRA GOLD NUGGET Brown County State Park Fall Clean-Up CORP By Jody Weldy

For the past five years or so, it seems one of the projects at the fall cleanup over Thanksgiving weekend was helping Yvette work on the F Trail that leads to the store on SR 135. The trail going down the hill not far from the road has always been a problem. It's not a great design but we have no choice. Several years ago when the store ORATE SPONSOR changed ownership the previous owner did not want riders to ride the

ITRA BRONZE NUGGET trail on his property anymore. Yvette worked hard to lease a right-a- CORPORATE SPONSOR way from another property owner. That's why the trail is where it is today. This year though, we made great progress. A volunteer brought his skid loader. With the additional help of driving and following excellent orders, they were able to remove all the mud which was every bit of a foot deep creating horrible footing for the horses. Once the mud was gone, fabric was put down. Then the

ITRA TRAIL LEAD remaining rock that we had been using all the previous years was put CORPORATE SPONSOR down over the fabric although a lot more rock is needed. If anyone wants to donate a load we'll take it.

4 13 Taking Care of Your Ride

Hot Weather Riding Info By Rita Lockridge

This article is a partial reprint from Sept., 2016 Trail Mix, but with warm weather coming, we thought it would be a good reminder.

Add air temperature and relative humidity and subtract wind speed. If your total adds up to 180 degrees or above don't ride. If it is 130-170 degrees use caution, 130 degrees or below ride! Determine: Temperature (F) + relative humidity (%) -wind speed=safe number to ride Temperature (F) 79 +Relative Humidity (%) 58 -Wind Speed 4.6 (MPH) Answer = 132.4  Less than 130: All horses can function to cool themselves assuming adequate hydration.  130 170: Caution horse's cooling mechanisms can only partially function as intended. Some cooling management procedures will need to be performed.  180 or above: Stop! Horse's cooling systems cannot and will not function adequately. All cooling procedures will need to be utilized to keep the horse out of serious trouble. In cool temps with low humidity, heat loss through convection and conduction can be as much as 50%. Heat can also be lost through radiation, with as much as 60% of a body's heat lost in this way when air temperatures are cool. The numbers in our equation would add up to much less than 180, and the horse would have no difficulty cooling itself. As temperatures rise, the thermal gradient for heat dissipation is reduced, resulting in less convective, conductive and radiative heat loss and more evaporative cooling. The evaporation of water from the skin surface is the most important means of heat dissipation in high-heat/low- humidity conditions. So, when we get a high temperature reading with low humidity, a horse may still not have difficulty cooling, but if temperatures are extremely high with no wind, we might get a result above 140, which would means our horse needs our help cooling off. With high humidity, sweat cannot evaporate as easily and so the ability of the horse to cool itself in this important way is reduced. When high humidity is combined with high temperatures, (which we just saw reduce the effectiveness of radiant, conductive and convective cooling), 6 the horse has now lost all four means to cool itself and is in a dangerous situation, subject to a greater rate of heat accumulation within his body. 5 12 On the Trail with Vice President Pence and His Family and friends By Jody Weldy

Early spring 2016 when then Gov. Pence and Lt. Gov. Holcomb were in Elkhart, I stopped by to say hi and to try and get a trail riding date with the then Governor Pence. Then Governor Pence introduced me to then Lt. Governor Holcomb. He and I got to talking, and he said his wife loved to ride, gave me her card and told me I needed to get a hold of her. Later when I got home I emailed her introducing myself saying I.T.R.A. was ready to take her for a trail ride. Later in June at the Republican State Convention I got to meet her and introduced myself. Again told her we'd be happy to take her for a ride, and she said she was looking forward to it. In my e-mail I had given her some dates when there would be I.T.R.A. members in force at some locations. About a week before Scotty's chili dinner at Tippy I got a call from her intern, Keven saying that Janet would like to come for a ride. I told him great. They arrived at Tippy around 4 p.m. and I put her on Bruce's horse, which by the way she climbed right on. He's a good 15.2 hands tall, so I was impressed! She's a good rider and got along with Lucky just fine. But at 6 p.m. we had to find a good cell signal because she had to give an interview with a radio station. We found a place that we both had three bars, and she made the call and sat on Lucky the whole time giving the interview. I was glad when it finally ended because it was getting dark! I told her to lead with Lucky and he'd get us back to camp, and he did in record time. She said she's looking forward to more rides, and now that she is our First Lady I am seeing lots of trail rides in the future.

From Purdue University By Way of Pat Dye

Calling All Horse Owners in the Tippecanoe County and Surrounding Areas

Equine Community Practice at Purdue University would like to organize a Facebook page or email list of horse owners who would be willing to haul a horse into Purdue University Veterinary Hospital on emergency – for a fee and with a signed hold-harmless waiver, which would be available for V.P. Mike Pence and Jody Weldy download.

Too often, we are called out to see a horse on emergency that needs referral into the hospital, but the clients doesn't have a trailer, or the truck or trailer is broken or gone at the time. We are then scrambling to find someone to haul the horse into the clinic rather than have to euthanize because we can't get it in for help.

We are soliciting feedback from horse owners in the area as to interest in involvement and how to best get names on the list and circulated when there’s a need.

Please email us at [email protected] with your thoughts, Gov. Holcomb’s wife on the trail with Jody. comments, and if you are interested in getting on this list. 11 6

ITRA on the Trail with Destination Rides

Rocky Mountain National Park by Jody Weldy

I was penciling in a trip to either National Park in Montana or the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming when Cherri Cronen posted some trail riding pictures from her trip to Grand Lake, CO. One picture she posted on the East Inlet Trail made me say, "I have to ride that trail". So I got all the info on where she stayed and started plotting out my route and picking my overnight places. We stayed at the Winding River Resort in Grand Lake, Colorado. The resort borders the Rocky Mountain National Park and those are the trails you ride. They have several sites with two horse corrals at each site. You have water and electric at each site. If you have more than two horses, there are additional corrals you can rent but they may be quite a distance from your camp site. They have very nice showers and toilets. Also here are several porta potties scattered throughout the camp. You can also rent just a room or a cabin if you don't have a camper. There is easily 4 or 5 days of riding out of camp and the resort also has two trailers you can rent -- when we were there, the smaller trailer was in use with fencing materials so were had to rent the larger stock trailer which was a 10 horse trailer! The trails are well marked and maintained but a lot of them are very rocky, so I'd suggest shoes all the way around or boots. Camp is at 8700 feet and a few times we ITRA DREAMS CAME TRUE!! hit over 10,000 feet on a couple of the trails, so needless to say, you should have your horses in pretty good condition. I Come see at our Annual Meeting was surprised that, yes, you are either going uphill or We finally found a skid downhill, but the trails are not really steep but they are very steer!! Since our money collecting long and gradual. Our two boys had no trouble whatsoever efforts have not been very on any of the trails. successful lately, some of us have been talking and searching this The wildlife is what really makes it fun. Spotting a winter for a used machine. The moose on the trail while riding is so neat plus elk are in machine we have a deposit on is abundance. Maybe the wildest thing we saw on the trail two *Vermeer (I think it is 4 years old) different times were people using llamas as pack *35 horse power (we were afraid animals!
