Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

~ ~ WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES A Survey of Rare and Endangered Mayflies of Selected RESEARCH Rivers of Wisconsin by Richard A. Lillie REPORT110 Bureau of Research, Monona December 1995 ~ Abstract The mayfly fauna of 25 rivers and streams in Wisconsin were surveyed during 1991-93 to document the temporal and spatial occurrence patterns of two state endangered mayflies, Acantha metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex. Both species are candidates under review for addition to the federal List of Endang ered and Threatened Wildlife. Based on previous records of occur rence in Wisconsin, sampling was conducted during the period May-July using a combination of sampling methods, including dredges, air-lift pumps, kick-nets, and hand-picking of substrates. No specimens of Anepeorus simplex were collected. Three specimens (nymphs or larvae) of Acanthametropus pecatonica were found in the Black River, one nymph was collected from the lower Wisconsin River, and a partial exuviae was collected from the Chippewa River. Homoeoneuria ammophila was recorded from Wisconsin waters for the first time from the Black River and Sugar River. New site distribution records for the following Wiscon sin special concern species include: Macdunnoa persimplex, Metretopus borealis, Paracloeodes minutus, Parameletus chelifer, Pentagenia vittigera, Cercobrachys sp., and Pseudiron centra/is. Collection of many of the aforementioned species from large rivers appears to be dependent upon sampling sand-bottomed substrates at frequent intervals, as several species were relatively abundant during only very short time spans. Most species were associated with sand substrates in water < 2 m deep. Acantha metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex should continue to be listed as endangered for state purposes and receive a biological rarity ranking of critically imperiled (S1 ranking), and both species should be considered as candidates proposed for listing as endangered or threatened as defined by the Endangered Species Act. -

Visit us at www.stateparks.IN.gov What’s New at Indiana State Parks in 2018 Below is a snapshot of work we have done and will do to prepare for your visits in 2018. There are many other small projects not listed that help manage and interpret the facilities, natural and cultural resources, and history of Indiana’s state park system. Indiana’s 32 state park properties have more than 2,000 buildings, 700 miles of trails, 636 hotel/lodge rooms, 17 marinas, 75 launching ramps, 17 swimming pools, 15 beaches, 7,701 campsites, more than 200 shelters, 160 or so playgrounds and 150 cabins. In recent years, we have focused attention on campground and cabin improvements, filling full-time and seasonal staff positions, and continuing a tradition of excellence in interpretation and in hospitality at Indiana State Park inns. We have a new 5-year plan, based on public responses to our Centennial Survey (more than 10,000 responses) and input from staff. It focuses on facilities and trails, improving efforts to manage our natural resources and remove invasive species, investing in technology, looking at ways to be more environmentally responsible, and training and support for park staff. Our Friends Groups and other donors contributed thousands of dollars and labor hours for projects and events. 170 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY Arhopala in Borneo, or at least 22 species of the strange genus Allotinus in the subfamily Miletini, or 12 species of Miletus itself? A host of Celastrina blues, and spectacular long tailed Drupadia hairstreak species, make one want to take the next plane to Borneo to explore and study the endless variety of these groups there! In addition to providing an excellent guide to identification and some details of the basic biology of these two major families of butterflies in Borneo, the authors include pictures in color and words of the richness of the Bornean habitats that still remain. Yet they warn that during the two short years since the publication of Volume I, forests have continued to be destroyed for the sake of local economic development, especially for the export of forest timber to Japan. As the editor, Kazuhisa Otsuka, aptly says in his Foreword, "The tropical rain forest and its rich life should last forever for the earth as well as for us. The beautiful green world where birds sing, flowers bloom, and nymphs (butterflies) dance, should not be harmed any more beyond the present state. Otherwise, it will eventually lead to an unnatural extinction of human being." Together with the plates, this fascinating text (published in full in both Japanese and English) provides a rich introduction to the incredible butterfly fauna of Borneo. The excellent text figures, maps, and separate keys for males and females provide the elements of a model work for others to emulate. Any lepidopterist or scientist interested in the butterflies of southeast Asia will want to add both volumes of this work to his or her library. -

Contributions Toward a Lepidoptera (Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, Thyrididae, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, & Noctuoidea) Biodiversity Inventory of the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab Hugo L. Kons Jr. Last Update: June 2001 Abstract A systematic check list of 489 species of Lepidoptera collected in the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab is presented, including 464 species in the superfamilies Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, and Noctuoidea. Taxa recorded in Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, and Thyrididae are also included. Moth taxa were collected at ultraviolet lights, bait, introduced Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), and by netting specimens. A list of taxa recorded feeding on P. notatum is presented. Introduction The University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL) contains 40 acres of natural habitats maintained for scientific research, conservation, and teaching purposes. Habitat types present include hammock, upland pine, disturbed open field, cat tail marsh, and shallow pond. An active management plan has been developed for this area, including prescribed burning to restore the upland pine community and establishment of plots to study succession (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/natl.htm). The site is a popular collecting locality for student and scientific collections. The author has done extensive collecting and field work at NATL, and two previous reports have resulted from this work, including: a biodiversity inventory of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) of NATL (Kons 1999), and an ecological study of Hermeuptychia hermes (F.) and Megisto cymela (Cram.) in NATL habitats (Kons 1998). Other workers have posted NATL check lists for Ichneumonidae, Sphecidae, Tettigoniidae, and Gryllidae (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/insect.htm). -
A REVIEW of the MAYFLY FAMILY METRETOPODIDAE' Some Years
A REVIEW OF THE MAYFLY FAMILY METRETOPODIDAE' BY LEWIS BERNER 2 Department of Zoology University of Florida Some years ago, I collected nymphs of a species of Siphloplecton from the Withlacoochee River near Valdosta, Georgia, from which I was able to rear adults. As I worked with them, it appeared that they were Siphloplecton basale (Walker), but further study .con vinced me that they represented a new species. Dr. W. L. Peters, collecting in northwestern Florida, also reared adults, which at first inspection seemed to be S. basale, but he, too, concluded that his specimens represented a new species and he asked that I add his col lections to mine. As I attempted to understand the relationships of these two new forms to species earlier described, I realized that it would be well to review the entire genus. Among the specimens loaned to me for study by Dr. G. F. Edmunds, Jr., I found a collec tion of nymphs from Alaska which had been identified as Siphloplecton. It soon became apparent to me that they had been misidentified, but the similarities of the nymphs to those of Siphloplecton were so great that the misidentification was no sur prise. The nymphs were those of Metretopus (probably borealis [Eaton]). I concluded that such close similarities required that I in clude a study of Metretopus along with my review of Siphloplec ton. My examination of the immatures of the two genera has revealed morphological characteristics that now permit ready separation. These differences are detailed below and are included in the key. TYPE SPECIMENS OF SPECIES OF DYNASTINI (COLEOPTERA: SCARABAEIDAE: DYNASTINAE) DESCRIBED BY J. L. LECONTE AND G. H. HORN BY JONATHAN R. MAWDSLEY Department of Entomology Museum of Comparative Zoology Cambridge, MA 02138 USA ABSTRACT A lectotype is designated for Megasoma thersites LeConte (type-locality Cape San Lucas, Baja California) from the Leconte collection, Museum of Comparative Zoology. The holotype of Dynastes grantii Horn is preserved in the Horn collection, Museum of Comparative Zoology. INTRODUCTION The pioneer American coleopterists John L. LeConte and George H. Horn each described a single species of Dynastini. Given the popularity of scarabs, particularly dynastines, with col- lectors and the relative accessibility of the LeConte and Horn col- lections in the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ), it is surprising that no previous workers were aware that Megasoma thersites LeConte was described from 8 specimens, none of which had originally been designated as a holotype. Hardy (1972:773) speculated that this species had been described from a single holo- type male, but an examination of the LeConte collection and LeConte's original description (1861:336) clearly indicate that multiple specimens were used to describe this species. I have therefore designated a male specimen from the syntype series as lectotype. The single species of Dynastini described by G. H. Horn, Dynastes grantii, was described from a single specimen from Fort Grant, Arizona, and the holotype of this species is in the Horn col- lection in the MCZ. CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -
