History of Italian Mafia Spring 2019
Lecture Course SANTA REPARATA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ART Course Syllabus Semester : Spring 2019 Course Title: History of Italian Mafia Course Number: HIST 297 Meeting times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:40pm-4:00pm Location: Room 207, Main Campus, Piazza Indipendenza Instructor: Professor Lorenzo Pubblici Ph.D. E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Tuesdays, 9am-11am, but don’t hesitate writing for any problem or doubt to my email address. 1. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will examine the history of the Italian Mafia, starting with the Unification of Italy up to the present. The approach will be both political-historical and sociological. A discussion of the major protagonists, in the flight against the Cosa Nostra such as Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borselino will be an integral part of this course. The course will end with a discussion of contemporary organized crime in Italy. This semester in particular, we will focus on the so-called new mafia, the ‘ndrangheta, a powerful and growing organization rooted in Calabria but present all over Europe. 2. CONTENT INTRODUCTION: The course begins with an analysis of the roots of the Italian mafia that lay within the over reliance on codes of honor and on traditional family values as a resolution to all conflicts. Historically we begin in the Middle Ages with the control of agricultural estates by the mafia, the exploitation of peasants, and the consequent migration of Sicilians towards the United States at the end of the 19th century. We then focus on the controversial relationship between the mafia and the fascist state, and the decline of organized crime under fascism. -

Your fierce intelligence and fearless pursuit of knowledge, adventure, and happiness have inspired me more than you will ever know, as individual and as scholar. Acknowledgements This dissertation would not have been possible without the sage support of Professor Paola Bonifazio, who was always open to discussing my ideas and provided both encouragement and logistical prowess for my research between Corleone, Rome, Florence, and Bologna, Italy. Likewise, she provided a safe space for meetings at UT and has always framed her questions and critiques in a manner which supported my own analytical development. I also want to acknowledge and thank Professor Daniela Bini whose extensive knowledge of Sicilian literature and film provided many exciting discussions in her office. Her guidance helped me greatly in both the genesis of this project and in understanding its vaster implications in our hypermediated society. Additionally, I would like to thank Professor Circe Sturm and Professor Alessandra Montalbano for their very important insights and unique academic backgrounds that helped me to consider points of connection of this project to other larger theories and concepts. -

Chi ha paura muore ogni giorno. Chi non ha paura muore una volta sola. Paolo Borsellino 3 Chapter 1 Introduction Mafia is a phenomenon that has affected Italy for long and in many different aspects. Particularly, it has led to a spiral that first affected industrial productivity and reputation, and later led to considerable reductions in investments toward our territory. Although the primary economic nature of the phenomenon, this field of study has not addressed the investigation of the causes and effects thoroughly. Thus, among social sciences, economics has contributed very limitedly to understand the phenomenon mafia and its economic impact. I have undertaken the challenge for several reasons. -
La Cultura Italiana
LA CULTURA ITALIANA SIDNEY SONNINO (1847-1922) This month’s essay follows an earlier essay about Prime Minister Vittorio Emanuele Orlando and his work at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. His Foreign Minister, who also was in attendance at the Conference, was a strong supporter of Italian war claims of territory from the defeated Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the stumbling block in much of the discussions dur- ing spring, 1919 that prevented compromises to be made on a number of issues. He was especially forceful in pushing the terms of the London Treaty of 1915 that had brought Italy into the war on the side of the Entente. The territorial claims in that treaty were ignored by Britain and France at the conference and became a political problem in Italy that aided the later rise of Mussolini to power. At the conference, he alienated the other participants, especially Wilson, Clemenceau, and Lloyd George with his intransigence. Even Orlando countered him on some of his positions, thus making the Italians appear confused in their policies. Sidney Costantino, Baron Sonnino was born in Egypt on March 11, 1847. His grandfather had emigrated from the ghetto in Livorno, Tuscany, where the family had lived for decades, to Egypt. There he had built up an enormous fortune as a banker. Sidney returned to Pisa as a young child with his family. His father was an Italian of Jewish heritage (Isacco Saul Sonnino, who converted to Anglicanism); his mother (Georgina Sophia Arnaud Dudley Menhennet) was Welsh. Sonnino was raised Anglican by his family. -

Symposium / “Telling about the Mafia”: Research, Reflexivity, and Representation, edited by Marco Santoro “The Sicilian Mafia” Twenty Years After Publication by Diego Gambetta doi: 10.2383/35869 The Sicilian Mafia was originally written in English, and published by Harvard University in 1993 (the publisher Einaudi was faster and the book came out first in Italian translation, in late 1992). It has since been translated into German (1994), Spanish (2007) and Polish (2009). The time may be ripe for examining the impact the book has had so far, but first I would like to say a few words about the origins of this study. My interest in the mafia stems partly from my biography. Having been born and raised in the northern Italian city of Turin, and having spent most of my professional life in England, the Sicilian mafia was not just geographically distant, but as culturally alien to me as it is to a Scandinavian. -
