Fish were collected with 3 randomized samplings per season at 6 stations using 6 sets of gillnets. A total of 45 fish species were found and most were in the Cyprinidae family. The catch by gillnets was dominated by Parambassis siamensis with an average CPUE for gillnets set at night of 807.77 g/100 m2/night. No differences were detected on CPUE between the seasonal surveys. However, the CPUEs were significantly different (P<0.05) between the stations. The Pak Narmkam station had a higher CPUE compared to the Pak Narmpung station (1,609.25±1,461.26 g/100 m2/night vs. 297.38±343.21 g/100 m2/night). The results of the study showed that the Nong Han Wetlands is a lentic lake and the fish abundance was found to be medium. Having genetic characterisation at the disposal of researchers has produced mostly use‑ ful, and arguably more objective conclusions. However, there are several groups for which limited genetic information is available and, coupled with the lack of standardised protocols, renders molecular study of these groups challenging. The Diplozoidae are fascinating and unique monogeneans parasitizing mainly freshwater cyprinid fshes in Europe, Asia and Africa. This group was studied from a molecular aspect since the turn of the century and as such, limitations and variability concerning the use of these techniques have not been clearly defned. In this review, all literature and molecular information, primarily from online databases such as GenBank, were compiled and scrupulously analysed for the Diplozoidae. This was done to review the information, detect possible pitfalls, and provide a “checkpoint” for future molecular studies of the family. Hindrances detected are the availability of sequence data for only a limited number of species, frequently limited to a single sequence per species, and the heavy reliance on one non‑coding ribosomal marker (ITS2 rDNA) which is difcult to align objectively and displays massive divergences between taxa. -

Surveys of Native Freshwater Fishes in Surin Province, Thailand
Surveys of native freshwater fi shes in Surin province, Thailand Hatairat SAOWAKOON*, Samnao SAOWAKOON, Apaporn PADOONGPOJ and Kittikorn JINDAPOL Rajamangala University of Technology Isan ABSTRACT Surveys of native freshwater fi shes in Surin were conducted during October, 2000-September, 2002. Fish specimens were collected by various types of fi shing gears e.g. gill net, purse seine, hook and lines, traps, and other fi shing methods such as electro-fi shing and Sodium cyanide were applied in some cases. The fi sh samplings were undertaken at the following fi ve sampling sites; 1) Mun River at Thatoom District, 2) Chee River at Muang district, 3) Ampauen reservoir at Muang District, 4) Haui Lampork reservoir at Srikhorapoom District and 5) Haui Sa-neng reservoir and Surin Campus Reservoir at Muang District. The fi sh were subsequently analyzed for taxonomy and distribution. The results indicated that 108 fi sh species within 25 families were recorded. Cyprinidae family was found as the most dominant comprising of 49 species, followed by Siluridae (7 species), Cobitidae (7 species), Bagridae(6 species), Pangasiidae (6 species), Belontiidae (4 species), Channidae (4 species), Mastacembelidae (4 species), Notopteridae (2 species), Ambasseidae (2 species), Soleidae (2 species), Clupeidae (2 species), and the families of one species ; Blonidae, Hemiramphidae, Clupeidae, Balitoridae, Gyrinocheilidae, Anabantidae, Eleotridae, Helostomatidae, Osphronemidae, Nandidae, Sundasalangidae, Synbranchidae and Tetraodontidae. The populations are mostly farmers, working in extensive farming systems. (Monogenea, Diplozoidae) is described from the gills of Sikukia gud- geri Smith, 1931 (Cyprinidae) collected from Jinghong Basin, a tributary of the international Lancang-Mekong River. This is the first diplozoid species from S. gudgeri and its description increases the number of Paradiplozoon species recorded in China to 25. The new species is distinguished from congeners by a combination of morphological and molecular features. The anterior end of the median plate is thickened in the marginal area and a narrow rectangular trapeze spur connects to the anterior jaw through two separate anterior joining sclerites. The posterior end of the med- ian plate sclerite is invaginated with a smooth strip-shaped posterior joining sclerite. Comparison of a newly obtained sequence of rRNA ITS2 with 18 other congeneric sequences from GenBank provides support for separation of the new species. In this paper, we focus on species belonging to the Cyprininae – the largest sub-family among Cypriniformes – and we present both morphological and phylogenetic arguments to revise the taxonomy of the genus Cyclocheilichthys. For morphological investigations, we characterized external traits as well as the postcranial skeleton and the neurocranium. For molecular phylogenies, we used four markers, both mitochondrial and nuclear, to establish a phylogenetic tree.
