Ms.Adriana Zierer Doutoranda em História/ UFF [email protected] Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar Artur nas fontes medievais latinas e célticas. É possível perceber que a imagem de guerreiro apresentada por Nennius (c. 800) muda para a de rei cristão a partir da Historia Regum Britanniae (1135-1138), de Geoffrey de Monmouth. Também apresento Artur na literatura céltica (no conto Kuwlch e Olwen), no poema Gododin, de Aneirin (c. 600) e em Preideu Annwvyn (Os Despojos do Outro Mundo), (do século X), sobre uma fracassada viagem de Artur ao Outro Mundo em busca do caldeirão da abundância. Em todas essas narrativas predominam os seguintes aspectos do rei mítico: valentia, generosidade e força, valores estes que continuaram em obras posteriores sobre Artur desenvolvidas na Baixa Idade Média. É também possível perceber que o mito do Graal e sua relação com Artur tem sua origem na literatura céltica. Palavras-chave: Artur, Guerreiro, Rei Cristão Abstract The goal of this paper is to present Arthur in Medieval Latin and Celtic sources. It is possible to perceive that the warrior’s image presented by Nennius (c. 800) changes to the one of a Christian king since Historia Regum Britanniae (1135-1138), by Geoffrey of Monmouth. I also present Arthur in Celtic sources (such as in the tale Kulwch and Olwen), in the poem Gododin, by Aneirin (c. 600) and in Preideu Annwvyn (The Spoils of the Underworld) (10th century), about one failed Arthur’s expedition to the Otherworld in search for the magic cauldron of plenty. -

Uwagi ogólne Zestaw materiałów opatrzony wspólnym tytułem King Arthur and Medieval Knights jest adresowany do studentów uzupełniających studiów magisterskich na kierun- kach humanistycznych. Przedstawione ćwiczenia mogą być wykorzystane do pracy z grupami studentów filologii, kulturoznawstwa, historii i innych kierunków hu- manistycznych jako materiał przedstawiający kulturę Wielkiej Brytanii. 2. Poziom zaawansowania: B2+/C1 3. Czas trwania opisanych ćwiczeń Ćwiczenia zaprezentowane w tym artykule są przeznaczone na trzy lub cztery jednostki lekcyjne po 90 minut każda. Czas trwania został ustalony na podstawie doświadcze- nia wynikającego z pracy nad poniższymi ćwiczeniami w grupach na poziomie B2+. 4. Cele dydaktyczne W swoim założeniu zajęcia mają rozwijać podstawowe umiejętności językowe, takie jak czytanie, mówienie, słuchanie oraz pisanie. Przy układaniu poszczegól- nych ćwiczeń miałam również na uwadze poszerzanie zasobu słownictwa, dlatego przy tekstach zostały umieszczone krótkie słowniczki, ćwiczenia na odnajdywa- nie słów w tekście oraz związki wyrazowe. Kolejnym celem jest cel poznawczy, czyli poszerzenie wiedzy studentów na temat postaci króla Artura, jego legendy oraz średniowiecznego rycerstwa. 5. Uwagi i sugestie Materiały King Arthur and Medieval Knights obejmują pięć tekstów tematycznych z ćwiczeniami oraz dwie audycje z ćwiczeniami na rozwijanie umiejętności słucha- nia. Przewidziane są tu zadania na interakcję student–nauczyciel, student–student oraz na pracę indywidualną. Ćwiczenia w zależności od poziomu grupy, stopnia 182 IV. O HISTORII I KULTURZE zaangażowania studentów w zajęcia i kierunku mogą być odpowiednio zmodyfiko- wane. Teksty tu zamieszczone możemy czytać i omawiać na zajęciach (zwłaszcza z grupami mniej zaawansowanymi językowo, tak by studenci się nie zniechęcili stopniem trudności) lub część przedstawionych ćwiczeń zadać jako pracę domo- wą, jeżeli nie chcemy poświęcać zbyt dużo czasu na zajęciach. -

The Early Arthur: History and Myth
1 RONALD HUTTON The early Arthur: history and myth For anybody concerned with the origins of the Arthurian legend, one literary work should represent the point of embarkation: the Historia Brittonum or History of the British . It is both the earliest clearly dated text to refer to Arthur, and the one upon which most efforts to locate and identify a histor- ical fi gure behind the name have been based. From it, three different routes of enquiry proceed, which may be characterised as the textual, the folkloric and the archaeological, and each of these will now be followed in turn. The Arthur of literature Any pursuit of Arthur through written texts needs to begin with the Historia itself; and thanks primarily to the researches of David Dumville and Nicholas Higham, we now know more or less exactly when and why it was produced in its present form. It was completed in Gwynedd, the north-western king- dom of Wales, at the behest of its monarch, Merfyn, during the year 830. Merfyn was no ordinary Welsh ruler of the age, but an able and ruthless newcomer, an adventurer who had just planted himself and his dynasty on the throne of Gwynedd, and had ambitions to lead all the Welsh. As such, he sponsored something that nobody had apparently written before: a com- plete history of the Welsh people. To suit Merfyn’s ambitions for them, and for himself, it represented the Welsh as the natural and rightful owners of all Britain: pious, warlike and gallant folk who had lost control of most of their land to the invading English, because of a mixture of treachery and overwhelming numbers on the part of the invaders. -
Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English Past
Chapter 3 Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English Past Rebecca Thomas Geoffrey does not grant much space to the English in the De gestis Britonum. In one respect, this is unsurprising: Geoffrey’s history extends back to the origins of the Britons in Troy, spending a significant amount of time in pre-Roman Britain, and as such the English enter the narrative rather late in the day. Even after their arrival, however, the English do not appear in the way which we might expect. The traditional narrative of the development of the English kingdoms, pioneered by sources such as Bede’s Ecclesiastical History and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and accepted and reproduced by many of Geoffrey’s contemporary Anglo-Norman historians, has no place in the DGB. With his strikingly different version of events, Geoffrey certainly cannot be accused of lacking originality in his treatment of English history. The way in which he approached this subject is highly significant not only for our understanding of his attitude toward the English, but also for the composition of the DGB more generally. There was no shortage of contemporary historians writing of the English past, such as Henry of Huntingdon, the first version of whose History of the English, with which Geoffrey was most likely familiar, was completed by 1130. Henry presents us with a conventional account of English history, drawing heavily on Bede and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.1 Hengist and Horsa arrive in Britain in 449, and after recounting their dealings with the Britons, Henry pro- ceeds through the various other Saxon settlers of the 5th and 6th centuries. -

Gordić Petković University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Philosophy, Department of English Studies, Dr Zorana Djindjića 2, 21101 Novi Sad, Serbia [email protected] Medieval English romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is unique not only in its form, content and structure, but also in the poet’s skillful use of conventions that play with the reader’s expectations by introducing elements that make the poem exquisitely ambivalent and place it in the fuzzy area where reality and fiction overlap. Although the poem seemingly praises the strength and purity of chivalry and knighthood, it actually subtly criticizes and comments on their failure when practiced outside the court and in real life. This is particularly noticeable when the poem’s symbolism, its hero, and the society he comes from are read against historical context, i.e. as reflections of the realities of medieval life. Accordingly, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight can be read as a poem that praises chivalry and knighthood more by way of commenting on their dissipation than through overt affirmation, as the future of the kingdom, its rulers and society, with its faulty Christian knights, is far from bright, given the cracks and flaws that mar its seemingly glossy façade. Introduction To Thesis Every nation has endemic legends, yet some “endemic” legends are paradoxically transnational; one such multinational “endemic” story is the set of legends forming the narrative of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. Despite a specific hearth in Wales, Arthurian legend has permeated European literature and culture. In order to further the understanding of the evolution of a medieval narrative tradition, specifically the Arthurian legend and the significance of the character Mordred to this series of legends, scholars must locate the different concerns, values and interests of the peoples that created the literature. The geographical movements, reasons for movement and subsequent locations of the authors, or performers, of Arthurian legend (as well as, any written and orally transmitted cultural artifact) are not only of interest, but necessary, to a complete scholarly understanding of the different Arthurian works and the contemporaneous time periods in which they were created. -

Berthold History 489 April 23, 2012 i ABSTRACT This paper examines The History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth, with the aim of understanding his motivations for writing a false history and presenting it as genuine. It includes a brief overview of the political context of the book at the time during which it was first introduced to the public, in order to help readers unfamiliar with the era to understand how the book fit into the world of twelfth century England, and why it had the impact that it did. Following that is a brief summary of the book itself, and finally a summary of the secondary literature as it pertains to Geoffrey’s motivations. It concludes with the claim that all proposed motives are plausible, and may all have been true at various points in Geoffrey’s career, as the changing times may have forced him to promote the book for different reasons, and under different circumstances than he may have originally intended. The textual history of the Historia Brittonum Keith J Fitzpatrick-Matthews North Hertfordshire Museum © 2017 The work • Known during the Middle Ages, usually ascribed to Gildas • Renaissance scholars tended to call it Eulogium Britanniae • And realised that the attribution to Gildas was false • But discovered that several manuscripts included a preface by Nennius • Gunn’s publication of a version found in Vatican MS Latin 1964 called it Historia Brittonum • Used by all subsequent editors of the text • Who usually referred to it as a work by Nennius • Mommsen’s edition of 1894 has dominated subsequent discussions • Especially with his printing of the Additamenta Nennii as a ‘second edition’ • Dumville’s much vaunted research has resulted in the publication of a single slim volume The manuscripts • Numerous manuscripts of the work are known • Some are direct copies of others, others differ hugely in their content, phrasing and spelling • The oldest manuscript dates from the eleventh century (Chartres MS 98) • It is a truncated and poorly written précis • The second oldest is later eleventh century (Vatican MS Latin 1964) • It lacks some of the features found in the versions used as the basis for printed text • The next oldest is early twelfth century (Harleian MS 3859) • It contains more text than almost any other version • Including some genealogies and annals not found in any other • But lacks the preface of Nennius Manuscript groups (‘families’ or ‘recensions’) • This variety led nineteenth century editors to group the manuscripts • Stevenson’s -

3 MEDIEVAL BELIEFS IN ARTHUR’S ATLANTIC VOYAGES ARTHUR’S DEATH OVERSEAS IN GEOFFREY’S HISTORY Geoffrey’s Reconcilation of Two Traditions The thesis set out in this book, that Arthur sailed west to a distant land in the sixth century, here identified as North America, is not a new one. It was present at the time that Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote his famous History of the Kings of Britain in c. 1138. Geoffrey drew on a wide range of material to write his book and would have been familiar with the entry in the Annales Cambriae that Arthur died at the battle of Camlann along with Mordred (Medraut) in 537/539. Camlann was thought to be located in Britain. In his pseudo-history, Geoffrey expands this data into a tale of adultery and betrayal. He presents Mordred as Arthur’s nephew, usurping the crown and having a sexual relationship with Guinevere (Gwenhwyfar), while Arthur was fighting in Europe. Hearing this news, Arthur returns to Britain and engages Mordred in a series of battles until Mordred flees to Cornwall. There at the River Camblam (Geoffrey’s location for Camlann) the final battle took place, where Mordred is killed. However at this point Geoffrey inexplicably departs from the basic data of the Annales Cambriae. Instead of Arthur dying at Camlann, Geoffrey presents him as only being severely wounded and abruptly states that he was then carried off to the Isle of Avalon so that his wounds might be healed. No information or explanation concerning the Isle of Avalon is given. The key question of interest is why did not Geoffrey simply allow Arthur’s life to end at Camlann, as in the Annales Cambriae, dying a heroic death but winning the battle against the traitors and heathens opposed to him? The answer to this is that Geoffrey was aware of a different tradition that had Arthur dying at a distant place overseas. -

The Tolkien Society – Essays www.tolkiensociety.org The Celtic Roots of Meriadoc Brandybuck By Lynn Forest-Hill Readers of The Lord of the Rings do not seem perplexed by the name Peregrin Took (Pippin), perhaps because any dictionary will tell them that Peregrin means 'pilgrim' and 'Pippin' is familiar as a name for a small rosy apple. But many readers express an interest in the unusual naming of Merry Brandybuck. This is a brief outline of some of the Celtic background to his unusual name 'Meriadoc'. Gwyn Jones and Thomas Jones (London: Dent, 1974). The Lais of Marie de France trans. Glyn S. Burgess (London: Penguin, 1986). The Arthur of the Welsh Rachel Bromwich et al, (Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1991). Encyclopaedia Britannica (1965) In most cases I have abstracted information from a good deal of elaboration. I have quoted directly where this is necessary, and indicated this with quotation marks. The Encyclopaedia Britannica provides some information regarding real lords bearing the name Conan: Celts from Britain fled from the invading Saxons in the 5th and 6th centuries. Brittany in France was known as Armorica before this influx of Celts from Britain. Celtic Brittany divided into several petty lordships. The Merovingian and Capetian Frankish dynasties tried to impose over-lordship but were resisted. In the 10th century Conan of Rennes became overlord. His line ended in 12th century after long struggle against Breton feudal lords.
