The play of colours of prisms Amelia Carolina Sparavigna Institute of Fundamental Physics and Nanotechnology Department of Applied Science and Technology Politecnico di Torino, C.so Duca degli Abruzzi 24, Torino, Italy A short history of prisms from Lucius Anneus Seneca to George Ravenscroft The first scientific paper written by Newton was on the compound nature of white light, a paper where he described his experiments with prisms and the spectrum produced by the light. Newton had performed the experiments, probably between 1664 and 1667, in Woolsthorpe and Cambridge, using several glass prisms [1]. These glass artifacts existed and were sold at the country fairs to be used for the "play of colours", that is, to see the rainbow colours looking through them. This phenomenon of white light dispersion, created by crystals and glasses, was well known from ancient times and reported by Latin writers. Newton, experimenting with glass to improve optical instruments, explained that the play of colours was inside the nature of light. Few years after the Newton's studies, the development of lead glasses allowed new applications for the play of colours. Here a short history of prisms from Seneca to Ravenscroft. 1. Seneca, Pliny and their prisms A Latin writer, Lucius Anneus Seneca, was fascinated by prisms. In his Natural Questions, [2,3], he told that there existed some glass rods commonly made in two forms: striated, and with many angles. If they received the sun's rays obliquely, they create the colours as it is usually seen in a rainbow. It seems therefore that the glassmakers were producing such rods for observing the play of colours. -

In particular, this study focuses on glass sickness. This term is often used to describe visual changes that occur on glass surfaces as a result of chemical deterioration, and is of particular relevance for objects which have not been exposed to extreme conditions and have been stored indoors for most of their lifetime. -

BEECHAM T was Seebohrn who first alleged that individual holdings--strips or parcels--in the Open Fields of medieval England were bounded by I green balks of unploughed turf. 1 This statement was accepted and copied by many later historians until the publication of the Orwins' Open Fields in I938. The Orwins, in this and the subsequent edition published in 1954, disputed Seebohm's general statement on the grounds that he had mis- interpreted his evidence." They argued that any purpose balks might have had was already served by a boundary of a different sort. The action of the fixed mouldboard plough was to form lands (ridges, beds, warps, stitches, etc.) and between each land was a clearly demarcated furrow. Each man knew how many lands went to his strip and the furrow showed where each land joined the one adjacent to it. Balks would have been pointless and waste- ful; and it is difficult to conceive such a wastage of land at a time when the cultivated area in each parish was barely sufficient to support the needs of the community. Two further points made by the Orwins are as follows. "... A common complaint in the proceedings in the manorial courts is that against the man who encroached upon his neighbour's strip, which could not have happened if there were an intervening balk." Furthermore, "the compilers of the Book of Common Prayer thought it desirable to repeat the condemnation by the law of Moses of those who removed their neighbour's landmarks. -

INTRODUCTION The development of the glass industry in the Northeast has played an influential role in the availability of consumer goods to varying classes of urban and rural populations. Particularly, the nineteenth century was witness to numerous innovations in production techniques which drastically affected product availability, price, and ultimately demand. In New York City, the Bloomingdale Flint Glass Works was established in 1820 and closed its operation in 1840. The glassworks was constructed on a plot of land in the vicinity of West 47th Street and the Hudson River, and produced high quality cut and engraved glassware. By 1821 a factory was built and by 1823 housing for workers was built to the east near Eleventh Avenue. A contextual overview of glass making was prepared, from which theoretical questions about this particular site were derived. -
