Biological studies were carried out on samples of the catch during most of these months. Limnological studies were carried out over a period of four months in 1973. Li11lnothrissa is breeding successfully and its number have greatly increased. [t has reached an equilibrium level of population size at a [ower density than that of Lake Tanganyika sardines, but nevertheless is an important factor in the ecology of Lake Kariba. The growth rate, size at maturity and maximum size are all less than those of Lake Tanganyika Li11lnothrissa. A marked disruption in the orderly progression of length frequency modes occurs in September, for which the present body of evidence cannot supply an explanation. With increasing fishing pressure, fish populations may undergo a series of changes in size, University of Namibia, Private species composition and abundance. As a result, scientists and managers are deemed to seek for Bag 1096, Ngweze, Katima alternative measures to protect and conserve fish stocks. One such option is the use of fish protected Mulilo, Namibia areas (FPAs). Two recently established FPA’s on the Zambezi/Chobe River are the Kalimbeza and SK Mafwila Kasaya Channels. However, accrued benefits of these FPAs have never been assessed. Comparative Department of Fisheries and experiments using gillnets of different mesh sizes (12 mm – 150 mm) were conducted between FPA’s Aquatic Sciences, and Sam (Kalimbeza channel) and non-FPA’s (Hippo channel) between March and December 2016 to test the Nujoma Marine and Coastal hypothesis that, FPA’s would yield high fish abundance (CPUE) than non- FPAs. There was no significant difference in growth weight, FCR, lysozyme, myeloperoxidase and alkaline phosphatase between treatments. Protease index of activity was significantly lower in fish fed with Artemia bio- enriched with spirulina (71.48%) and highest in the control diet (95.48%). The colour intensity and redness of the fish also significantly increased when fed Artemia bio-enriched with spirulina versus Artemia bio-enriched with yeast or a control diet. -

Botswana Notes and Records, Volume 52, 2020 Notes on the Community Structure and Biology of Fishes in the Okavango Delta Glenn S Merron∗ Abstract The Okavango Delta (Delta) is a dynamic ecosystem constantly in motion. Each year the timing, magnitude, and duration of the annual flood is dependent on rainfall levels in the southern Angolan highlands. The annual floodwaters arrive in the northern Delta in January but do not reach the southern Delta and Thamalakane River until approximately May. With the flood waters the Delta rapidly surges with biological productivity as nutrients are quickly assimilated by aquatic plants, fish, and insects. Many of the 80 fish species undergo annual migrations to spawning and feeding grounds throughout the myriad of waterways. There are distinct fish communities in the Delta which can be separated from each other by the physical characteristics of the different habitat types with which they co-evolved. An overview of the community structure of the fishes and the environmental factors that limit their distribution is presented in this piece. In the northern riverine floodplain and perennial swamp, a higher species richness was recorded than in the seasonal swamp and drainage rivers. Introduction There are at least 80 fish species inhabiting the myriad of waterways that characterise the Delta’s aquatic ecosystem. These species and others from the Chobe River are described in detail in the Field Guide to Fishes of the Okavango Delta and Chobe River, Botswana (Bruton et al. 2018). The Delta receives an annual pulse of water each year, locally known as the flood. The timing, magnitude, and duration of the flood are not constant from year to year and determined by the periodicity and volume of annual rainfall in the southern Angolan highlands. -

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of study Environment, whether physical, biological or chemical, is composed of discrete components that are either biotic or abiotic, and are extremely related and dependent on each other for optimal functioning. Therefore, any interference with the natural state of these components, especially to an extreme condition, often leads to ecosystem disruption, ecological imbalance/stress and even global deterioration. Such interferences most often stem from the quest to satisfy one need or the other at the expense of another, without due caution on the potential consequences. However, such consequences when they occur have ways of attaining solutions, executing corrections and potentially itching for reclamations. Most environmental consequences arise from the phenomenon known as “Pollution”, which is the occurrence of contaminants within a pre-existing natural environment with the aftermath effect of initiating adverse change. And considering the three basic domains of the earth; air, water and soil, pollution have been an age long concern. Regardless of the source of contaminants or point of contamination, pollution whether it is air, water or soil, can be borderless; hence the reason for the associated global impacts. In fact, air, water and soil pollutions in forms of particulate matter emissions, sea oil spills and polychlorinated biphenyls-impacted soil, respectively abound. These do occur to the magnitude that questions have been asked- ‘what/who is the cause?” Definitely, the answer is humans- the embodiment of the biological part of the ecosystem that is saddled with the utmost responsibility of resource utilization and management. The wants of humans are insatiable and with rapid growth in population, 1 increase in demands and supply become inevitable. -
