2016 Woodlands Annual Report 2016 Annual Report Imagine the Possibilities OUR MISSION The Woodlands is a nonprofit human services organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children, teens and adults with disabilities and chronic illness. Our work is designed to strengthen and support individuals and groups in five main areas: socialization, recreation, environment, culture and spirituality. Activities are held year-round at the beautiful, 52-acre, fully accessible facility in Bradford Woods, Pennsylvania. Our signature programs focus on art, music, recreation, fitness and transitional living. The Woodlands has been enriching lives for more than a decade, and now serves thousands of participants per year. THE WOODLANDS LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, As I reflect upon my first year with The Woodlands, I find myself in awe of the individuals our organization is dedicated to serving and those committed to making their time here unforgettable. We draw inspiration from the accomplishments our program partici- pants experience while at The Woodlands. Simple acts and activities that we take for granted—swimming in a pool; camping out in a tent; sinking a putt from a well-aimed golf stroke; sharing laughter and ca- maraderie with friends around the dining table—are major triumphs for those we serve. There is a great deal that we can learn from the individuals who fill our campus with laughter and song. Their energy is infectious. Their en- joyment and gratitude moving. It should come as no surprise that The Woodlands is a unique place, for both those who participate in our pro- grams and the people who work here. It is a place for all of us to learn, grow, and reflect on both simple joys and major accomplishments. It is why those involved become enmeshed, like family. I look forward to fostering these relationships, new and old alike, and ushering continued growth on campus as we move forward. We en- courage our program participants to imagine the possibilities, and with the continued support of the community, I look forward to doing just that. With gratitude, Joseph R. Milharcic Executive Director 1 THE WOODLANDS FINANCIAL STATEMENT SUPPORT AND REVENUE Contributions 4% 8% 12% Grants Special Events 20% Facility User Fees 38% Investment Return 18% Misc. We maintain a steadfast commitment to making high-quality health care accessible, understandable and affordable. This report details how Highmark Health and our affiliates work every day to positively impact the lives of the people we serve. Letter From the Chairman of the Board Highmark Health and its affiliated companies, Highmark Inc. and the Allegheny Health Network, had a particularly strong year in 2013. We achieved significant success and continued to transform the company through diversification and new approaches for managing costs and improving quality and the customer experience. Our strong performance provides us with a solid foundation to meet the opportunities and challenges we will face in 2014. Creating an integrated health care delivery system We are charting a new course in health care that is focused on integration, innovation and meeting the needs of the consumer. In 2013, we took a bold step consistent with our strategy for growth and created the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) through affiliations with Jefferson Hospital, Saint Vincent Health System and the West Penn Allegheny Health System. This offers us new opportunities to work on behalf of our customers and members to implement an entirely new health care delivery model and better align payments with patient care. These hospitals are important community assets, and we intend to apply their clinical expertise to ensure that residents of Western Pennsylvania get the best health care possible.
