  • Isabelle Hainaut, Queen of France
Pg 1 Isabelle of Hainaut Born: 5 Apr 1170 Valcenciennes, FRA Married: King Philippe II of France Died: 15 Mar 1190 Paris, FRA Parents: Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut & Countess Margaret of Flanders Isabelle of Hainaut (5 April 1170, Valenciennes - 15 March 1190, Paris) was queen consort of France. Isabelle was born in Valenciennes,on 5 April 1170 the daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut and Countess Margaret I of Flanders. She married King Philip II of France on 28 April 1180 at Bapaume and brought as her dowry the county of Artois. The marriage was arranged by her maternal uncle Count Philip of Alsace who was advisor to the King.[2] Isabelle was crowned consort of France at Saint Denis on 28 May 1180. As Baldwin V rightly claimed to be a descendant of Charlemagne, the chroniclers of the time saw in this marriage a union of the Carolingian and Capetian dynasties. Though she received extravagant praise from certain annalists, she failed to win the affections of Philip due to her inability to provide him with an heir. Meanwhile, King Philip in 1184, was waging war against Flanders, and angered at seeing Baldwin support his enemies, he called a council at Sens for the purpose of repudiating her. Robert, the king's uncle, successfully interposed. Finally, on 5 September 1187, she gave birth to the needed heir, the future King Louis VIII of France. Her second pregnancy, was extremely difficult; on 14 March 1190, Isabelle gave birth to twin sons. Due to complications in childbirth, Isabelle died the next day, and was buried in the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.

Pepin shown standing Pepin le Bref Baldwin II, Margrave of Flanders 2 Continental Ancestors Before Hastings Saints, nuns, bishops, brewers, dukes and even kings among them David Anderson March 12, 2016 Abstract Early on, our motivation for studying the ancestors of the Chicago Rodger’s was to determine if, according to rumor, they are descendants of any of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell. We relied mostly on two resources on the Internet: Ancestry.com and Scotlandspeople.gov.uk. We have been subscribers of both. Finding the ancestral lines connecting the Chicago Rodger’s to one or more of the Scottish Earls of Bothwell was the most time consuming and difficult undertaking in generating the results shown in a later book of this series of three books. It shouldn’t be very surprising that once we found Earls in Scotland we would also find Kings and Queens, which we did. The ancestral line that connects to the Earls of Bothwell goes through Helen Heath (1831-1902) who was the mother and/or grandmother of the Chicago Rodger’s She was the paternal grandmother of my grandfather, Alfred Heath Rodger. Within this Heath ancestral tree we found four lines of ancestry without any evident errors or ambiguities. Three of those four lines reach just one Earl of Bothwell, the 1st, and the fourth line reaches the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

To Theo van Gogh. Arles, Thursday, 5 July 1888. Thursday, 5 July 1888 Metadata Source status: Original manuscript Location: Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, inv. no. b549 V/1962 Date: The letter must date from early July: Van Gogh refers to the consignment of painting supplies from Tasset (ll. 26-27) which he had received at the end of June (see letter 635). The fact that he had recently paid the rent indicates that it was towards the beginning of the month (ll. 40-41). In letter 637 of Sunday, 8 or Monday, 9 July he says referring to the present letter that he wrote last Thursday, which means that it must have been written on Thursday, 5 July 1888. Et toutes les lignes etaient belles, lensemble dune noblesse 1 Van Gogh had written to Russell2 about exchanging work; see letter 635. He had probably also sounded him out again about buying a painting from Gauguin3.

  • The French Prince Who Invaded England
2017 IV Louis: The French Prince Who Invaded England Catherine Hanley New Haven: Yale University Press, 2016 Review by: Sean L. Field Review: Louis: The French Prince Who Invaded England Louis: The French Prince Who Invaded England. By Catherine Hanley. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2016. ISBN 978-0-300-21745-2. xvi + 279 pp. $40.00. he brief reign of Louis VIII of France (1223–1226) has always been obscured by that of his august father, Philip II (r. 1180– 1223), and his saintly son, Louis IX (r. 1226–1270). A detailed T French monograph by Charles Petit-Dutaillis (1894) remains standard, in spite of more recent biographies by Gérard Sivéry (1995) and Ivan Gobry (2009). Catherine Hanley now gives us the first book-length treatment of Louis in English. As her subtitle indicates, the heart of the book is a narration of Louis’s ultimately unsuccessful, but nevertheless important, invasion of England in 1216–1217. This is a volume aimed at a wide audience, with an appealing, fast-paced prose style. Hanley is the author of a previous scholarly monograph on Warfare and Combat, 1150–1270 (Boydell and Brewer, 2003), but is probably better known for her recent series of historical novels set in thirteenth-century England. Louis is not a work of fiction, however, and thus it is surprising to find that Yale University Press would chose to publish the book without notes of any kind. The author does provide a judicious discussion of her sources in the introduction and again in a concluding “note on sources”.

Lucien D. Houle When Thomas Bisson, one of the foremost scholars in the field of medieval lordship, wrote about medieval power and politics, he mused about how the study of this kind of history changed from one generation to the next. Between the time of his parents’ generation and that of his own, historians who were concerned with power began to recognize the importance of women and started to ask questions about regular people, not just kings. His awakening came when he read the primary sources themselves.

The New Cambridge Medieval History The fourth volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers the eleventh and twelfth centuries, which comprised perhaps the most dynamic period in the European middle ages. This is a history of Europe, but the continent is interpreted widely to include the Near East and North Africa as well. The volume is divided into two Parts of which this, the second, deals with the course of events, ecclesiastical and secular, and major developments in an age marked by the transformation of the position of the papacy in a process fuelled by a radical reformation of the church, the decline of the western and eastern empires, the rise of western kingdoms and Italian elites, and the development of governmental structures, the beginnings of the recovery of Spain from the Moors and the establishment of western settlements in the eastern Mediterranean region in the wake of the crusades. Press release, 25 February 2014 The CM N is inviting JR to create a participatory work at the Pantheon çTo the Pantheon!é an installation by JR #AuPanth·on ê www.au-pantheon.fr Press officer: Camille Boneu ê +33 (0)1 44 61 21 86 ê camille.boneu@ monuments-nationaux.fr çTo the Pantheon!é An installation by JR The restoration work currently being carried out on the Pantheon is one of the largest projects in Europe. The purpose of the current phase is to consolidate and fully restore the dome. A vast self-supporting scaffolding system ê a great technical feat ê has been built around the dome and will remain in place for two years. Last October the President of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, Philippe Bélaval, presented the President of the French Republic with a report on the role of the Pantheon in promoting the values of the Republic. The title of this public report was “Pour faire entrer le peuple au Panthéon” (Getting people into the Pantheon), and it contains suggestions on how to make the monument more attractive, encourage French people to truly identify with it, and give it a greater role in Republican ceremonies. In order to give concrete form to these proposals, which have since been approved by the public authorities, the CMN has chosen to ask a contemporary artist to carry out a worldwide project embodying the values of this monument, which is so emblematic of the French Republic. Hence for the first tim e the worksite hoardings installed around a national m onum ent will be used to present a contem porary artistic venture instead of a lucrative advertising cam paign.
