Issue № 2 (38), 2018 ISSN 2542-0526 THEORY AND HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE, RESTORATION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE UDC 72.01 V. O. Ignatyeva1 VOLUMETRIC AND PLANNING STRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS OF A. GAUDÍ’S PRIVATE HOUSES Ural State University of Architecture and Art Russia, Yekaterinburg, e-mail: [email protected] 1Senior Lecturer of the Dept. of Fundamentals of Architectural Design Statement of the problem. As there has been unflagging interest in the creative heritage of the ar- chitect A. Gaudi and a well-established art science approach to investigating it, it is of importance to conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of the works by this great Catalan. In historiog- raphy there are no examples of strict comparative analysis of volumetric, planning and construc- tive characteristics of private houses created by A. Gaudi (Casa Vicens; Güell Palace; the Güell Bodegas; the Bellesguard Villa). Results. The comparative analysis of volumetric, planning and constructive characteristics of four pri- vate houses created by A. Gaudi was performed chronologically; traditional and the author's solutions are formulated; the features of construction schemes and tendencies of their application were found. Conclusions. A. Gaudi's innovation in the organization of private residences are as follows: plac- ing of a stable in a cellar; complex organisation of the floor-plan diagram; introduction of interme- diate spaces for communication of various zones, an interior and an exterior; supply of light expo- sure of internal rooms; transformation of spaces; multipurpose flat roofing. Constructive decisions provide rationality of the device and expressiveness of interiors, embody the elementary tectonic schemes and craft traditions of Catalonia, author's unique method and complex structures.

  • Expressively Crafted: Josep Jujol's Connection to Arts and Crafts Ideals by Cate Mccowin Department of Art and Art History
Expressively Crafted: Josep Jujol’s Connection to Arts and Crafts Ideals by Cate McCowin Department of Art and Art History, University of Colorado Boulder Defended April 1, 2020 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Robert Nauman Committee Members: Dr. Robert Nauman, Department of Art and Art History Dr. Marina Kassianidou, Department of Art and Art History Dr. Javier Krauel, Department of Spanish and Portuguese Abstract Josep Maria Jujol (1879–1949) was an architect working in Barcelona during the city’s period of cultural upheaval and modernization. Modernisme was the art movement that encompassed this time period, coming from the international Art Nouveau movement. Jujol worked as a collaborator for many years with Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), a key figure in Barcelona’s architectural landscape. Jujol was responsible for the overseeing of various elements and the physical creation of some of the most iconic components of Gaudí’s architecture in Casa Battló, Casa Milà, and Park Güell. Yet, in art history, the work of Jujol has been eclipsed by the narrative of Gaudí’s “solo genius.” This thesis asserts the importance of Jujol on a global scale by aligning his work as a craftsman and architect with the values of the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement valued the handcrafted and the artist’s presence in their work, which is something exemplified by Josep Jujol. 2 Table of Contents Introduction……………………………………………………………………………………. 4 Chapter One: Global Context……………………………………………………….…………. 7 Chapter Two: Barcelona’s Modern Makeover………………………………………………… 20 Chapter Three: Josep Jujol………………………………………………………….…………. 32 Conclusion…………………………………………………………………………..…………. 44 Figures…………………………………………………………………………………………. 47 Bibliography…………………………………………………………………………………… 58 3 Introduction Barcelona. Antoni Gaudí 1 Antoni Gaudí Antoni Gaudí Antoni Gaudí by Pau Audouard [1] [2] Born 25 June 1852Reus, Catalonia, Spain Died 10 June 1926 (aged 73)Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain Work Buildings Sagrada Família, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló Projects Parc Güell, Colònia Güell [3] Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (Catalan pronunciation: [ənˈtɔni ɣəwˈði]) (Riudoms or Reus, 25 June 1852 – Barcelona, 10 June 1926) was a Spanish Catalan architect and the best-known representative of Catalan Modernism. Gaudí's works are marked by a highly individual style and the vast majority of them are situated in the Catalan capital of Barcelona, including his magnum opus, the Sagrada Família. Much of Gaudí's work was marked by the four passions of his life: architecture, nature, religion and his love for Catalonia.[4] Gaudí meticulously studied every detail of his creations, integrating into his architecture a series of crafts, in which he himself was skilled, such as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry. He also introduced new techniques in the treatment of the materials, such as his famous trencadís, made of waste ceramic pieces. After a few years under the influence of neo-Gothic art, and certain oriental tendencies, Gaudí became part of the Catalan Modernista movement which was then at its peak, towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Gaudí's work, however, transcended mainstream Modernisme, culminating in an organic style that was inspired by nature without losing the influence of the experiences gained earlier in his career. Rarely did Gaudí draw detailed plans of his works and instead preferred to create them as three-dimensional scale models, moulding all details as he was conceiving them in his mind.
