Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). His name was Guillem Rovirosa. Rovirosa studied Management in the Electrical and Mechanical Industries School of Barcelona Industrial University. It was a very interesting Catalan institution that brought together a group of very singular students. As much as possible, I have reconstructed the lives of each member of this group, as well as that of Rovirosa, since 1917, and have observed several affinities among them. They were all people with a deep interest in any technical novelty and shared an important ability to innovate (a great propensity for creativity). Rovirosa was himself an inventor of most diverse types of electromechanical solutions, from mechanical toys to cinematographic projectors and even an electromechanical method to make wines age faster – perhaps much faster – than usual1; his friend Josep Grau was one of the promoters of using X-rays in Spain2. -

_________________________________________________________________________________ Spanish Program BARCELONA AND MODERNISM (Taught in English) Total number of hours: 30 h I. COURSE CHARACTERISTICS: The Barcelona and Modernism module is a multidisciplinary course which offers students the possibility to come into contact with Spanish language and culture through art and the history of Catalan Modernism. The module encourages students to discover and view Barcelona as an open-air museum in which glass, mosaics and buildings allow them to reconstruct one of the city's most important historical periods. The module integrates Spanish language study with a range of aspect of modernist (architecture, sculpture, painting, decorative arts, literature and music). The course is complemented with guided tours of some of Barcelona's most emblematic landmarks. II. PRE-REQUISITES: None (taught in English) III. METHODOLOGY: In both its objectives and methodology, the course is highly communicative in its focus. This means that learning outcomes are set through capacity for language use and that course content is derived directly from the objectives established. The methodology is based on the practical use of Spanish with appropriate reflection to help in the assimilation of the language. IV. EVALUATION SYSTEM: The final grade for the course is distributed in the following way. Oral presentation (10%) CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT Work done outside class (20%) 60% Progress test (20%) Participation, effort and commitment throughout the course (10%) FINAL EXAM 40% V. GRADING AND CLASSIFICATION SCHEME: In assessed pieces of work and the final exam, the following grading and classification scheme will be used: Final course grade: 60% continuous assessment + 40% final exam Quantitative grade Qualitative grade The student will fail in any of the following cases: a) When they obtain a result of less than 5 out of 10 for the final course grade. -

Les causes, les dates i els noms són diferents a cada país europeu, però tots tenen un denominador comú. El modernisme abandona la tradició històrica i decideix aprofitar els avantatges que li ofereixen la tècnica i la indústria. A Bèlgica i França va rebre el nom d'Art Nouveau, a Alemanya el de Jugendstil, a Àustria el de Wiener Sezession, el de Liberty a Itàlia, i el modernisme a Espanya. -

Julio González First Master of the Torch in dialogue with Pablo Picasso David Smith Eduardo Chillida Anthony Caro González: First Master of the Torch David Smith, ARTnews, February 1956 The Bull in its symbolic action has stood for many things in Picasso’s history, things Spanish and things noble. The Bull has been the artist, the people of Spain, the open-eyed conscience of free men, the disemboweler of the lie of Franco, the aggressive protector of women, and among other symbols, the lover of woman. But after the death of Julio González, Picasso’s friend of forty-five years, the Bull becomes a skull on a green and blue fractioned table before the window curtained in violet and black. Coming home from the funeral Picasso had done this picture of a bull’s skull and dedicated it: “En homage à González.” To the wall of his studio was tacked a snapshot of his friend. For Picasso all source of life becomes the nature of painting. On what peaks did memory ride — for they were friends from youth, from the days of the Barcelona café, Els Quatre Gats. In 1901 Picasso shared González’s living quarters in Paris until he found a studio. Throughout the succeeding years they remained on good terms, visiting each other, even working together; and then, the end at Arcueil in March of 1942. The youngest of four children (the others, his sisters Pilar and Lola, his brother Juan), González was born in Barcelona in 1876. Both Juan and Julio were apprenticed in their fa- ther’s metal shop, becoming third-generation smiths. -
