Hermit Crabs from Eastern New Guinea1 ELDON E. BALL, JR.2 AND JANET HAIG3 ABSTRACT: This report is based on 19 species of hermit crabs collected in eastern New Guinea in 1969. One, Clibanarius englaucus, is a new species and several oth ers were not previously recorded from the area. Detailed observations on color in life were made for most of these forms. The report includes all published records of hermit crabs from the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Identifications are given for associated organisms in the following groups: Cnidaria (Anthozoa), Mollusca (Gastropoda), Acarina (Mesostigmata), Cirripedia (Rhizocephala), and Isopoda (Epicaridea and Plabellifera). THE HERMIT CRABS treated in this paper were very deep water just offshore. Sylvia Spring Wildlife Division Department of Lands, Surveys and Environment Papua New Guinea 1677/79 1 ABSTRACT In Papua New Guinea marine turtles are heavily utilised by coastal and island villagers as a source of subsistence food, for traditional feasts, and exchanges, and for sale in local markets. In general there are many traditional rules and regulations concerning the hunting and use of turtles, but these aire dependent on respect for traditional authority. In mOjfet areas traditional authority is eroding as a result of uhe younger generation being exposed to the western way of ',lLife and economy. The young people are taking advantage of \ modern equipment to catch turtles for everyday use and fpr sale in the markets. Village elders are beginning to notice the subsequent decline in turtles' numbers and attribute it to the disregard of old traditions. This paper summarises the findings of surveys carried out t^ investigate the subsistence and cultural significance of marine turtles in Papua Mew Guinea. These surveys include a postal questionnaire, village and market surveys. ./• 2 METHODS In 1977 the postal questionnaire was prepared in the three main languages of Papua New Guineat English, Motu and Pidgin and was distributed to various schools, colleges, missions and government organizations around the coast of Papua New Guinea. The information received in these questionnaires was carefully assessed and used as back ground information for village surveys. -

Bryan, Jr. The foll.ov~ingis a list of islands which are believed to qualify as "a:tolls," as defined at the Coral Atoll Symposium, held in Honolulu, T.H., in February 1951. ---.Included are non-elevated limestone structures with dry land, with or without a lagoon, and not associated olosely with high land. Excluded are elevated atolls (height more than about 25 feet above the sea), ~u~~n~atolls(without dry land), b~rrierreefs surrounding high islands (such as be Trulc group), and reef structures on fringing shelves or plat- forms adjacent to land masses (such as those on the Great Barrier Reef or to the north of western Java.) This list is believed to contain most of the reef structures vhich qualify as "atollsw in Pclpesia an6 Micronesia. The compiler is'less fa- mili.er vnth the reefs of other regions, and it is not unlikely that some "atolls" have been overlooked.
