The design used was a Howe Truss, patented by William Howe in 1840. The Howe Truss bridge design utilised both wood and wrought iron, because wood was difficult to use as a tension member. -

Department of Conservation June 2007 The Department manages a diverse range of rail heritage sites that are becoming increasingly popular. In 2007 the Automobile Association asked over 20,000 New Zealanders to identify the '101 Must-Do’s for Kiwis' — places they most wanted to visit. Of all DOC's historic sites two rail heritage sites were the most popular; the Central Otago Rail Trail (14th) and the Karangahake Mines (42nd). Rail heritage sites are different from static museums and operating lines. They offer an adventure experience exploring remote and scenic trails, adding diversity to the overall rail heritage scene and providing further entry points to trigger peoples potential interest. DOC’s sites include an industrial railway focus; timber, gold, coal, and even lighthouses, and so preserve another category of rail heritage. The Department shares the expertise of its heritage program, such as the results of scientific research into materials conservation; stone, wood and metal. These 31 DOC sites are open to visitors: AucklandAuckland Kauri Timber Co tramline, 1925-40, Whangaparapara, Great Barrier Island. Route of bush tram 14km long. One of the most fantastic bush trams ever. Includes 11 sections of incline worked by winch and cable. Tramping skills required. WaikatoWaikato Billy Goat incline, 1922-25, Kauaeranga Valley, Coromandel Forest Park. Route of bush tram 5 km long. A section of track is re-laid. A Price rail tractor will be restored and displayed. Karangahake Rail Trail, 1905-1978, Karangahake, near Paeroa. Issues of note this month: • We have received several queries from members questioning the unexpectedly high accounts received from the Rail Regulator, Waka Kotahi NZTA, for Safety Assessment work recently. We will be approaching Waka Kotahi to discuss this issue further. • Waka Kotahi have just produced an annual review document which can be found at Signal-a-year-in-rail-safety- 2019-20. This is a well-rounded document and has had input by FRONZ. It also highlights, in the statistical sec- tions, how significant the role played by heritage operators is in the New Zealand rail passenger scene. • Many readers will have seen circulated through various social media and e-mail, the document that Kiwirail pro- duced to brief the new Minister of Transport. Unsurprisingly it does not include heritage operators in their list of “stakeholders” or anywhere in the document. • Following the cabinet appointments announced by the Prime Minister, FRONZ has approached the new Minister of Transport for an opportunity to discuss our role with him and will be doing so as soon as we can arrange an appointment. In our regular discussions with the Ministry of Transport it has been suggested we should prepare a briefing paper for him prior to our meeting, as the MOT will do also. -

Venue: We have selected the Novotel, Ellerslie, as our conference venue. The Novotel is co-sited with the Ibis hotel which offers two levels of accommodation and no parking problems (there is a daily parking charge). Good bar and restaurant facilities on site. It is located right beside the motorway at the Greenlane interchange and more im- portantly also the Greenlane Railway Station so there will be opportunity for those who want to try out the new Auckland electric trains to have a ride. -

Here is a lot more about that and how we need your help. The current FRONZ website is aimed at encouraging rail groups to join FRONZ and serving members. This means it's not really appropriate or helpful for the general public. What we've done is to create a new website that IS aimed at the public and lets them know about rail-related sites and activities around the country. Members are grouped by region so that someone living in or visiting Wellington, for example, can see all the members in the Wellington region. Links are set up to send the public to your websites to get more information about who you are and what you do. We have also set up a new Facebook page where we'll post heritage rail news AND it will be set up so that it will display new content that you post on YOUR Facebook page as well. -

Working with Australian rail heritage to develop common publicity. • Executive Member Rob Martin, along with Executive Officer Margaret Gordon have been submitting on the changes to the restructuring of rail since the introduction of the Land Transport (Rail) Act On 19 December 2019. It was the opportunity to get recognition of our status as long-standing users of the rail network with definite inter- est on what was being proposed. • We have met with Erin Wynne, the Ministry of Transport director rail transformation to discuss how we can partici- pate in the proposed changes. We presented the set of problems facing the heritage movement and proposing ways to meet our concerns. These included: Recognition – for heritage operators as active participants in the rail network in NZ. Our preference for the Ontrack model. Resourcing – Existing issues and our expectations of where we needed support from the Ministry to overcome them. • We met with James Llewellyn NZTA Portfolio Manager (Transitional Rail). James has a transport background and is also responsible not only for the management of the portfolio team but also has responsibility for program management, business case advice, and strategy and plan development. -

Later we toured through the Sandhurst Pioneer Village Sandhurst Town, Victoria (14 kms from Bendigo) which included some steam powered relics. This video clip captured snippets of the tram tour and steam powered relics at Sandhurst Town. BPR had a variety of narrow gauge train options available - railcar, diesel hauled and steam hauled trains. BPRs narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock collection was sourced as redundant from other states of Australia, including Queensland, Tasmania, and South Australia. This video clip focussed on the activities of an ex-South Australian Railways T class steam locomotive T251 which hauled a consist of red and yellow, ex-Tasmanian Government Railways carriages. The video clip concludes with an ex-Tasmanian Government Railways railcar departing from the Queenscliff Railway Station. Archaeology of the Bay of Plenty Include: • the Low Frequency of Archaic Sites
operated from 1882 to 1914, with a final effort in the late 1930s. Tramways (several recorded under T13) and aerial ropeways moved the ore from mines to the batteries. Major batteries included the Crown, Woodstock and Talisman (T13/186), but there were other smaller ones as well. The batteries were water-powered (Fig. 20) with water drawn from dams on both the Waitawheta and the Ohinemuri Rivers. Later, power was provided by a coal-fired power house, some of which was used to run dewatering pumps for the deeper levels of the mines. There is substantial archaeological evidence in the area. Many of the sites are recorded, but not mapped in detail. Hence, in the intensely used area near the junction Figure 20. Pelton wheel of the rivers, there is a mass of evidence at the Woodstock Battery, that is not easily resolved into different structures or periods of use. Some Karangahake; T13/289. metalwork, including a pelton wheel, remains in situ. The area is now a DOC reserve and some track development has taken place. However, most of the interpretation for visitors is on the north side of the Ohinemuri River, outside the Bay of Plenty Conservancy. The area is a substantial heritage resource and needs more archaeological mapping, resolution of the evidence to the particular historical structures, and further interpretation. A smaller operation was the Treasure Island Reef mine at the north end of Waihi Beach (Downey 1935: 249; Moore 1997). This operated from 1898 to 1910. The drives from this mine are currently used as part of a sewage outfall.
