Our module layout is housed in the back of the hobby building “D”. There is no air conditioning and hav- ing to wear a mask I thought wow this is going to be un- bearable considering the show was from 10 AM to 9 PM. We had a full crew show up at 10 Wednesday morning and most stayed on when I arrived for my 2 o’clock shift. For some reason, I had one car on my train that kept derailing on the curve by the green house. David had the same expe- rience with one of his cars. Fortunately we had a track ex- pert Mike Phillips who found the problem; the rail jointers at two locations needed a slight adjust.     Port History to Modern Day S:\Port Information\Our Port History to Modern Day August 2013 2 EARLY HISTORY OF THE PORT OF TAURANGA 1290 Judge Wilson in his Sketches of Ancient Maori Life and History records that the canoe Takitumu carrying immigrants from Hawaiiki arrived in approximately 1290 AD and found Te Awanui (as Tauranga was then named) in the possession of a tribe of aborigines whose name, Puru Kopenga, or full net testified to the rich harvest to be drawn from the surrounding waters. 1769 In November, Captain James Cook passed close to Tauranga (pronounced Towrangha ) but did not enter the harbour. 1828 Probably the first European vessel to visit Tauranga was the missionary schooner Herald that called during this year. 1853 Captain Drury in HMS Pandora surveyed and charted the coast and harbour. 1864 Under the Marine Board Act of 1863, the Auckland Provincial Government Superintendent appointed the first pilot Captain T S Carmichael on 8 December 1864. He fixed leading buoys and marks in position to define the navigable channel, and his first piloting assignment was to bring HMS Esk into the harbour. The first house at Mount Maunganui was built for him late in 1866, to replace the tent in which he had lived during the previous two years. Copies of his early diaries are held in Tauranga s Sladden Library. Tauranga is probably the only Port in the country to experience a naval blockade. The Government of the day, fearful that arms would be run to hostile Maori warriors, imposed the blockade by notice in the New Zealand Gazette dated 2 April 1864.

Department of Conservation June 2007 The Department manages a diverse range of rail heritage sites that are becoming increasingly popular. In 2007 the Automobile Association asked over 20,000 New Zealanders to identify the '101 Must-Do’s for Kiwis' — places they most wanted to visit. Of all DOC's historic sites two rail heritage sites were the most popular; the Central Otago Rail Trail (14th) and the Karangahake Mines (42nd). Rail heritage sites are different from static museums and operating lines. They offer an adventure experience exploring remote and scenic trails, adding diversity to the overall rail heritage scene and providing further entry points to trigger peoples potential interest. DOC’s sites include an industrial railway focus; timber, gold, coal, and even lighthouses, and so preserve another category of rail heritage. The Department shares the expertise of its heritage program, such as the results of scientific research into materials conservation; stone, wood and metal. These 31 DOC sites are open to visitors: AucklandAuckland Kauri Timber Co tramline, 1925-40, Whangaparapara, Great Barrier Island. Route of bush tram 14km long. This is a well-rounded document and has had input by FRONZ. It also highlights, in the statistical sec- tions, how significant the role played by heritage operators is in the New Zealand rail passenger scene. • Many readers will have seen circulated through various social media and e-mail, the document that Kiwirail pro- duced to brief the new Minister of Transport. Unsurprisingly it does not include heritage operators in their list of “stakeholders” or anywhere in the document. • Following the cabinet appointments announced by the Prime Minister, FRONZ has approached the new Minister of Transport for an opportunity to discuss our role with him and will be doing so as soon as we can arrange an appointment. In our regular discussions with the Ministry of Transport it has been suggested we should prepare a briefing paper for him prior to our meeting, as the MOT will do also.

Three loops run up to ve trains with battery power. This layout has many interesting dwarf conifers, farm buildings, a campground, and a replica Gettysburg train station 2 The Hacker Express RR – Owner: Jed & Michelle Hacker The Hacker Express Garden Railroad has undergone an expansion since its first appearance on the tour in 2017 tripling the original layout. Many miniature plants accent the garden along with picturesque European themed scenes. Since it’s Fall, that means Oktoberfest! Come hear the polka band and enjoy the trains either moving beer from the brewery to Oktoberfest on the mainline, or passengers taking a ride on the scenic cog railroad up Der Korkenzieherberg. BONUS: From 3-5 pm there will be an alphorn ensemble playing music of the Swiss Alps.
