Almost the entire World Rally Hall of Fame, from birth to today, gathers for the tribute to the great Scottish driver, ten years after his death Republic of San Marino. All together, at Rallylegend next October 21st and 22nd: Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Miki Biasion, Didier Auriol, Tommi Makinen, Marcus Gronholm, Petter Solberg, Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier, with Sandro Munari and Markku Alen, winners of the FIA Driver Cups 1977 and 1978, that later became the World Rally Drivers since 1979.     1968 − 1984 Colin: the busy baby by Margaret McRae Colin Steele McRae was born on August 5, 1968. It was a Monday. He was born in the William Smellie Maternity Hospital in Lanark. And he was a much-wanted child – a first grandchild for my parents, however Jim’s mum and dad already had two. It’s from Jim’s mum that Colin took the name Steele – it was her maiden name. We were living in Blackwood, about five miles from Lanark, in those days. And it was to the house in Vere Road, Blackwood that we would have taken Colin home – if we hadn’t still been renovating the cottage at the time. Instead, we went and stayed with my parents for two or three weeks while we finished the work on the house. This was actually quite a God-send as my dad wasn’t feeling too well at the time and having a newborn baby in the house really took his mind off things. He spent all of his time, just focused on the baby. Right from the off, Colin was a busy baby and, unfortunately for us, not a baby to whom sleep came easily or quickly. I think he stayed in our room for about seven weeks, before we knew the time had come for him to go into his own room. I don’t think Colin really slept through the night completely for about two years. Alister, his younger brother, was something of a revelation by comparison and slept really quickly. It’s fair to say, Colin wasn’t an easy baby.

    Pat Kennelly Pat started his career in Aer Lingus as an aircraft mechanic, spending his first two years here in Bolton Street studying in the aeronautical department before mov- ing to the airport to complete his apprenticeship. However, his real passion was cars and in his spare time he built a rally car to compete first in night navigation events before moving to stage rallies in an Escort RS2000. In the late 80’s he got an opportunity to follow his dream and moved to Brussels to join Mazda Motorsport, to build cars for the World Rally Championship. Some years later, he moved to Ralliart (Mitsubishi Motorsport) in England where he became responsible for the building of the test cars. It was a busy schedule but a hugely exciting time, carrying out testing around the world and then driving the chase car on events in both the World & Asian Pacific Championships, work- ing with drivers such as Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Timo Salonen, Kenneth Erikson & Tommi Makinen. However, the testing sparked an interest and identified a gap in his engineering theory, so he left full time work and returned to college, firstly completing a Dominick Tuite HNC followed by a BSc at night. He then moved to Lotus where he worked as a Senior Development Engineer, Memorial Lecture 2015 helping to develop the new Lotus V8 twin turbo engine for the Esprit. He contin- ued rallying in his spare time, running an AE86 Corolla Twin Cam on Irish & Manx tarmac rallies. Having married and started a family, a return to Ireland was on the cards and with very few automotive opportunities available he returned to aviation, joining PWAI (Pratt & Whitney) firstly as a Production Engineer and then as R&D man- Design & Development of ager.

Hayden and Seb’s first podium of the season in Turkey on the last round was a nice moment and a plus following a measured and intelligent drive, but we know we missed out on so much more. Because of that, there has been a shift in the championship battle and we need to bounce back and do so quickly. We will aim to do just that in Wales. Thierry and Nicolas led in Turkey and showed that the pace of our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC was strong on the very rough stages we found there. The points they scored for winning the Power Stage after an impressive performance showed what might have been and could yet have a crucial bearing in the final championship reckoning. It is unfortunate that Turkey didn’t go to plan for Hyundai Motorsport, but we have to accept the situation and come back fighting; it is what rallying is all about. The positive things are clear: we have a good car, good drivers, Thierry and Nicolas still lead the championship and were competitive on Rally GB last year. Like Thierry and Nicolas, Andreas and Anders also led in Turkey. Andreas spent much of his early career in Wales and has a good knowledge of the terrain and what he needs to do to be quick.
