Hayden and Seb’s first podium of the season in Turkey on the last round was a nice moment and a plus following a measured and intelligent drive, but we know we missed out on so much more. Because of that, there has been a shift in the championship battle and we need to bounce back and do so quickly. We will aim to do just that in Wales. Thierry and Nicolas led in Turkey and showed that the pace of our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC was strong on the very rough stages we found there. The points they scored for winning the Power Stage after an impressive performance showed what might have been and could yet have a crucial bearing in the final championship reckoning. It is unfortunate that Turkey didn’t go to plan for Hyundai Motorsport, but we have to accept the situation and come back fighting; it is what rallying is all about. The positive things are clear: we have a good car, good drivers, Thierry and Nicolas still lead the championship and were competitive on Rally GB last year. Like Thierry and Nicolas, Andreas and Anders also led in Turkey. Andreas spent much of his early career in Wales and has a good knowledge of the terrain and what he needs to do to be quick. It’s also an event that’s well suited to Hayden and we know Seb will benefit from the positive energy he’ll receive from the British fans. Finally, we welcome back Jari and Antti – our Hyundai Motorsport Driver development Program crew – for Wales. Rally GB was the first event they did with our team so it will be nice to see how they have progressed during the past 12 months with the support and guidance we have given them. Michel Nandan Team Principal, Hyundai Motorsport Wales Rally GB October 04 - 07, 2018 ON STAGE WITH... SEB MARSHALL What’s your first Rally GB memory? “It was the first rally I ever went to in 2001. We were big Colin McRae fans and my brother convinced my Dad to take us to Wales to watch the championship climax. It was a five-hour drive from home, and Colin and Carlos Sainz had crashed out by the time we got SEB MARSHALL there because we couldn’t miss school. To watch AGE: 30 Richard Burns and Robert Reid celebrating their WRC STARTS: 44 world title was a special moment.” @SebMarshall After your Rally Turkey podium, what result can you achieve on your home round of the WRC? /SebMarshallRally “Traditionally, Rally GB is one of those events where you want to run closer to the front because the roads are in a better condition, not as slippery. But given the hot and dry summer we’ve had in the UK we won’t really know what to expect until we’ve done the recce. Our aim for every rally is top five, and with a lot of new stages this year there’s a more level playing field. It’s going to be a good, fresh challenge and we like that.” What are your thoughts on this year’s route? “It’s always good to mix things up. The classic stages are there but with a few changes and it’s great to go into new forests thanks to legislation in the UK that means we can now use small sections of closed public roads. Even if we’re just crossing a main road, so much more is opened up.” As a co-driver, what will you pay attention to when preparing pacenotes for this event? “I put in small references for the fog and the dark. Sections where every corner is a flat-out left and there’s a third-gear right at the end of them, it can all look the same so I’ll pick out a log pile with a reflective marker or a marshal post where people will be standing with high-visual clothing, for example.” What are the Hyundai i20 Coupe’s strengths going to be? “Thierry was very fast in Wales last year. While the Toyotas were on a good level in Finland, myself and Hayden were fighting up there as the best of the rest and we should take confidence from that.” How do you deal with the early starts and long days – do you get much sleep? “Once the event starts if you can get six hours you’ll be doing well. But once you’re up and in the stages the adrenalin kicks in.” Wales Rally GB October 04 - 07, 2018 HYUNDAI HAPPENINGS ● Hyundai Motorsport claimed its 10th podium finish of the 2018 World Rally Championship season with third place for Hayden Paddon and Seb Marshall on Rally Turkey. It was the crew’s first podium result of the year and their seventh overall with the team. ● Early rally leader Andreas Mikkelsen scored important championship points in fifth place following some technical issues, while Thierry Neuville maintained his lead in the Drivers’ standings by taking victory on the Power Stage. ● Hyundai Motorsport GmbH and Neuville have signed a new three-year contract, which means the Belgian will remain with the team until the end of the 2021 season. The announcement reaffirms Hyundai Motorsport’s commitment to the WRC and to Neuville, who has scored many memorable victories with the team since 2014. It also extends the partnership between Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul, who have proven to be a formidable force in the WRC in recent seasons. ● The Hyundai Motorsport Driver development Program crew of Jari Huttunen and Antti Linnaketo will return to WRC2 action on Wales Rally GB in their Hyundai i20 R5. The crew made their debut on Rally Poland, the penultimate round of this year’s European Rally Championship, as a gravel warm-up prior to Rally GB. In a strong performance, they finished second by just 8.3s and won seven stages. ● Huttunen was due to undertake more Rally GB testing on the Monday before the event started, with the works crews of Neuville, Mikkelsen and Paddon all in action for one day at the end of September. ● The Hyundai i30 N TCR’s competitive performance in its maiden season was rewarded in the Pirelli World Challenge finale at Watkins Glen in the USA in September. Drivers Michael Lewis and Mark Wilkins finished second and third respectively in the Drivers’ championship, with their combined total of seven wins and 18 podium finishes helping to secure the Teams’ championship for Bryan Herta Autosport and deliver the Manufacturers’ title for Hyundai America. ● Hyundai customers are also involved in the title chase in TCR Germany after a sublime performance in the penultimate round at Sachsenring last month. In only his third outing in the car in the series, Luca Engstler became the first driver this season to complete a perfect score – taking pole position and winning both races. Engstler, who has three consecutive victories in his Hyundai Team Engstler i30 N TCR, now leads the championship. ● Hyundai España-supported crews dominated last month’s Rallye Princesa de Asturias as the Spanish Tarmac Championship returned from its summer break. Three i20 R5s combined to win all but one of the rally’s 12 stages. José Antonio Suárez and co-driver Cándido Carrera claimed eight stage wins and their third victory of the season by more than 30 seconds. Fellow Hyundai driver Iván Ares was second to complete an i20 R5 one-two as he bids to maintain his national champion status. Wales Rally GB October 04 - 07, 2018 HYUNDAI IN NUMBERS 1967: Company founded in Korea and has gone on to establish sales networks in 190 countries and employs over 110,000 people. 10,000: Of those global employees some 10,000 people work at Hyundai’s R&D base in the Korean city of Namyang. 4: Across 13 rounds of the 2017 WRC, Hyundai crews scored four victories on Tour de Corse, Rally Argentina, Rally Poland and Rally Australia. Poland was especially successful as the team celebrated a one-two finish, with Thierry Neuville heading home Hayden Paddon. 91: Hyundai crews amassed 91 stage wins in the 2017 season as well as 56 Power Stage points. 10: Hyundai Motorsport claimed its 10th podium finish of the 2018 season with Paddon’s third place on Rally Turkey. In total, the team took 12 individual podium finishes in 2017 and four double podiums in Corsica, Portugal, Poland and Australia. 3: As its name suggests, the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC comes with three doors compared to the five in its predecessor. But while there are two doors less, the new-for-2017 challenger has a power output of 380hp thanks to the introduction of a larger turbo restrictor – up from 33mm to 36mm. 10: The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is wider but lighter – it has shed 10kg compared to the New Generation i20 WRC. 1: With the current regulations allowing manufacturers to nominate three point- scoring drivers rather than two, the three Hyundai i20 Coupe WRCs are entered under one banner: Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team.
