MEDIA INFORMATION 2019 FIA World Rally Championship Round 10/14: ADAC Rallye Deutschland The MICHELIN Pilot Sport H5 and S6 ready for Rallye Deutschland’s challenging cocktail of asphalt and concrete stages Although the majority of the rounds that make up the calendar of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship take place on gravel, the year’s asphalt fixtures counts amongst the sport’s most iconic competitions, including the wintry Rallye Monte-Carlo and France’s Tour de Corse which, this year, was held at the end of March. This week, Round 10 takes competitors to Germany for the campaign’s third sealed-surface rally which is famous for its mix of asphalt and abrasive concrete roads that pose an additional challenge for tyres. The stages themselves vary from narrow vineyard lanes and tracks over army ranges which features numerous changes of surface, to smoother, fast, flowing country roads. Rain is frequently a factor that the teams and crews need to take into account. Although the overall length of the 2019 Rallye Deutschland has been shortened slightly from 1,221.89 to 1,160.35 kilometres compared with 12 months ago, the total competitive distance has increased from 325.76km to 343.95km, while the menu includes 19 special stages instead of 18. As in 2018, the service park is based on the shores of Bostalsee Lake, around 60km south of Trier. For the first time, the wooded recreational park will also host the official start ceremony on Thursday evening. Friday’s programme comprises two attempts at a loop of narrow stages through the vineyards of the nearby Mosel Valley, plus two visits to a very tricky super-special in Wadern-Weiskirchen. -

After re-starting on the second leg they were fastest overall on the final day eventually scoring valuable points for the championship. While reigning APRC Champion Gaurav Gill regained the lead in the drivers championship from teammate Veiby, ŠKODA prematurely won the FIA APRC Cup for Manufacturers. -

Before I underline the team’s hopes and expectations for this event, I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that’s gone into putting on this rally in such a short amount of time. The efforts of AKK Sports and all the volunteers, particularly in the context of COVID-19, has really impressed me so a big thank you to them. It’s fair to say we showed our limits on Rallye Monte-Carlo and found ourselves licking our wounds and trying to get ahead. Unfortunately, it didn’t work there and after making some changes to our approach we start the second round of the season hoping it will be much better than the first. Having wished a fond farewell to Carlos del Barrio after Monte as he prepared for the next chapter of his career, we are pleased to welcome back Craig and Paul for the start of their half-season campaign in a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. We know very well their ability and determination as they try to make a strong start to their season. As well as our regular World Rally Car drivers, we are giving a big chance to a really promising youngster, Oliver Solberg. -

As soon as possible the young Czech changed to circuit racing, working up his ranks on national level. Soon he started winning, among others the 2001 ŠKODA OCTAVIA Cup on the race track. Using the rally version of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA Kopecký gave his rallying debut the same year and never looked back to circuits. Competing a ŠKODA OCTAVIA WRC in the Czech Championship (ČMR), he impressed the right people at ŠKODA Motorsport. Promoted to factory driver he won his first of today six Czech titles in 2004, driving a ŠKODA FABIA WRC. When after a break ŠKODA Motorsport returned to rallying in 2009 with the ŠKODA FABIA S2000, Jan Kopecký again was one of the factory drivers. He finished the season second overall in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and third overall in the Czech Championship. He backed up these results by finishing second overall in the IRC the three following years in a row, always driving a ŠKODA FABIA S2000. In 2012 Kopecký, since then partnered with co-driver Pavel Dresler, again became Czech Champion, taking the European Rally Championship (ERC) a year later with a record six wins. -

INFORMATION PRESSE 2014 FIA World Rally Championship ADAC Rallye Deutschland Michelin claims its first FIA WRC victory with Hyundai Motorsport and NEUVILLE / GILSOUL The ADAC Rallye Deutschland, round nine of the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), ended on Sunday, August 24, with the first win – and first one-two finish! – for Hyundai Motorsport in rallying’s showcase series. It was also the first world class success for Michelin in association with its Korean partner, the rallying department of which is based in Alzenau, Germany. After the promising third-place finishes they secured earlier in the year in Mexico and Poland, Thierry NEUVILLE and Nicolas GILSOUL put the N°7 Hyundai i20 WRC on the highest step of the podium in Germany, followed in the order by Dani SORDO and Marc MARTI in the N°8 sister car. Both Hyundai Motorsport crews survived what turned out to be a particularly taxing and drama-filled event. The Belgian pair produced a mature performance to claim their first WRC victory, while Dani SORDO provided another example of his speed on asphalt. The 2014 Rallye Deutschland took place in fickle weather and cool, autumn-like temperatures. Indeed, the delicate conditions and tricky stages caught out a high number of front-runners, resulting in some dramatic changes to the leaderboard. The changeable weather meant that both hard- and soft-compound tyres were used at different times depending on the teams’ respective strategies. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport H2 (hard) was the preferred choice for Friday’s dry roads, but the softer S2 version was the chief option for the remainder of the rally, including for the visits to the notoriously punishing Panzerplatte test. -

MEDIA INFORMATION 2018 FIA World Rally Championship Round 2/14: Rally Sweden Michelin’s studded tyre range covers all the bases in mixed conditions Once again, Rally Sweden lived up every bit to its promise, despite crews having to cope with a taxing blend of ice, snow and exposed gravel. As usual, fans turned out in huge numbers and flocked to the event’s famous spectator spots like ‘Colin’s Crest’ where the cars take off and perform spectacular leaps of up to and more than forty metres. To help them rise to the challenge posed by this year’s Rally Sweden, Michelin provided its WRC partners with the MICHELIN X-Ice North 3 equipped with 384 studs to bite into the frozen ground. Meanwhile, its partners competing in the WRC2 Pro (for factory teams) and WRC2 (privateers) classes ran the MICHELIN X-Ice NA01, a brand new studded tyre designed specifically for championship’s R5 cars. “In the end, the conditions were better than we had been expecting,” observed Arnaud Rémy, the manager of Michelin’s rally programmes. “By that I mean they were colder and more typical than the forecasts had led us to believe. There were fewer portions of exposed dirt than some had been predicting, too. For sure, the coating of ice was quite thin at times but our studs stood up better than some drivers had anticipated through the more challenging potions. Indeed, thanks to the exclusive studding technique we employ [see below], our tyres hardly lost any studs at all and the lack of grip that was reported at times was due more to the presence of water and slush. -

Like in the past, this tyre producer will be the main partner of the rally also during the 50th edition of the Barum Czech Rally Zlín. This rally, which is located in Moravian city of Zlín, has been developed during the years up to the top of the motorsport scene in the Czech Republic and every year it's been the pioneer with introducing new features and innovations to the rallysport. Since 1983 the rally has been a part of European Rally Championship and from 2007 it was a part promoted by TV station Eurosport. With this step the quality of the rally rose up. The rally HQ as well as the start and finish ramp are as usually located in the centre of Zlín city. 2018 MEDIA GUIDE Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rallye Deutschland, Hyundai Motorsport’s home event, which takes place during a very exciting time for the WRC with both title battles finely balanced. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.
