Although last month’s Rally didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the military range, which are very specific to this rally. As is always the case, the weather can be a big factor on Rallye Deutschland and it’s one of the challenges we know we might face but can never control. Any variables when it comes to the weather are not easy to manage but we have a very experienced team of engineers and drivers to rely upon. After being outside the podium in Finland, it will be important to regain some of the ground we lost in Jyväskylä. We have a strong driver line-up at our disposal in Germany, including Jari and Antti in WRC2, and it’s important we give them a competitive which is why we have put in a lot of work since Corsica to do this. It’s difficult to quantify the work we have done, but we are quite optimistic we’ve found some improvements for our home rally. And as our base in Alzenau is some 200 kilometres away, personnel from the factory will be coming along to lend their support, which is always good to see. You start Rallye Deutschland leading the world championship. How does that sound? “It was also the situation last year – we started in Germany with exactly the same points as Ogier – but the margin is much bigger this time. Can you describe the challenge? “Rallye Deutschland is a hard event because every day you have to tackle different kinds of stages. You have the vineyards, the Saarland stages and then you have Baumholder, which is fantastic with a good atmosphere but really demanding at the same time. When the weather is not great it makes it surprisingly slippery in some corners. When you also consider the concrete blocks on the side of the road and the high tyre wear, it becomes really challenging.” It’s fair to say it is quite intense as a rally? “It is intense. For many years now we have always had rain for one day, which makes it very challenging for the tyre choice. You also have to work closely with your gravel crew because it can be quite muddy when there is a lot of rain.” So a rally where you really need to use your brain? “You have to think a lot to get the confidence at Rallye Deutschland. Making the right tyre choice is very important.” What does the extra fan support mean to you? “Of course you see them with a lot of Belgian flags around the stages and they give you a lot of support. It won’t change the result but it’s good to see so many people from your country supporting you.” Where do you rank this rally compared to other events on the WRC calendar? “For me, it’s one of the highlights, definitely. I enjoy being there, I enjoy the vineyards a lot, it’s very technical, very fast and very unusual. It’s only in Germany where you have this style of roads and Baumholder is also unique, so it’s a really nice event.” Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI HAPPENINGS ●  was Hyundai Motorsport’s top performer on the last round of the in Finland in late July where he finished just outside the podium in fourth place. ● Thierry Neuville maintained his Drivers’ championship advantage over Sébastien Ogier in ninth after being hampered by an unfavourable road position for much of the event. He completed the rally on a high note, however, by claiming two bonus points for going fourth fastest on the . rounded out the top 10 after recovering from a roll on stage four. ● Teamwork was key for Hyundai Motorsport in Finland following a tough opening morning when both Mikkelsen and Neuville went off the road on consecutive stages, which necessitated extensive repair work by the Hyundai mechanics during midday service. Team manager Alain Penasse said: “They did an amazing job”. ● Hyundai Motorsport has carried out five days of testing in preparation for Rallye Deutschland with all three works crews in action on vineyard roads and in the Baumholder military ranges, on terrain typical of what will feature on the event. HMDP driver also had a chance to test his Hyundai i20 over two days in the week before the rally. ● August will be a busy month for . Fresh from his Rallye Deutschland appearance, the Spaniard will be heading east to the Czech Republic for the country’s round of the FIA European Rally Championship, Rally Zlín. There he will drive a with the aim of showcasing the car to potential customers. The event, which uses all-asphalt stages, will also mark Dani’s ERC debut and follows on from a two-day test in Czech Republic earlier in August. ● Hyundai Motorsport Driver development Program crew Jari Huttunen and Antti Linnaketo were on form on , finishing second in the WRC2 category and just outside the top 10 after an encouraging performance on their home event. It was their first WRC2 podium and followed on from Nicolas Ciamin’s top-three finish on the previous WRC2 round in Sardinia in another Hyundai i20 R5. Afterwards, Huttunen said: “We can take this momentum forward to Germany where I hope we can make some more improvements.” Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI IN NUMBERS 1967: Company founded in Korea and has gone on to establish sales networks in 190 countries and employs over 110,000 people. 10,000: Of those global employees some 10,000 people work at Hyundai’s R&D base in the Korean city of Namyang. 4: Across 13 rounds of the 2017 WRC, Hyundai crews scored four victories on Tour de Corse, , and Rally . Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 ABOUT N ● First announced in 2015, the N line-up showcases Hyundai’s engineering expertise, offering high-performance models that are equally at home on the road, or out on a race circuit. ● N was born in Namyang, Korea in Hyundai’s global R&D centre and honed at the famous Nürburgring circuit, home to the Hyundai Test Centre. The close working relationship between the engineers in Korea and Germany created the foundations for the development of the line-up. With all this experience, N delivers exhilarating driving pleasure for everyone – pure emotions. ● The i30 N was the first road-going model to be launched from the N line- up in July 2017. The car is based on the New Generation i30. However, it was developed from the ground up in order to deliver maximum driving pleasure for everyone. Under the theme ‘Fun to Drive’, the i30 N has been developed on the basis of three cornerstones: Corner Rascal, Everyday Sports Car and Race Track Capability. It offers segment-leading high-performance elements that can be selected individually by the driver in order to tailor the car for any scenario, from a comfortable daily commute to a day at the track. ● Like the i30 N TCR the road-going i30 N is powered by a two-litre, turbocharged engine. Mikkelsen joined Hyundai Motorsport for three late-season events in 2017, passing his audition with flying colours by earning a long-term deal with the team. Having initially flown in skiing, he switched to when injury curtailed his promising career on the slopes. Relocating to the UK for 2006, he was a winner shortly after getting his driving licence following his 17th birthday. Fifth on the 2008 Rally then made him the youngest driver to score a WRC point. Mikkelsen won back-to-back Intercontinental Rally Challenge titles in 2011- ANDREAS MIKKELSEN 12. A relative latecomer to co-driving, Jæger has enjoyed a rapid rise to the WRC ranks having started his career in 2014 in his native Norway alongside Bernt Kollevold. He made his world championship debut that year with in Spain before going on to contest a mix of mainly Junior WRC and European championship events the following season, scoring five podiums including a win in the former. Jæger’s partnership with long-time friend Mikkelsen began in fine style in 2016 when they were second on ANDERS JÆGER Rallye Monte-Carlo, one of six podium visits that Date of birth: July 29, 1989 included two victories. His successes last year included four victories – the most of any driver – and he finished with a win in Australia. Having enjoyed huge success at junior level before stepping up to the WRC in 2009, the Belgian finished second in the 2013 standings after a highly competitive season. Those performances caught the eye of Hyundai’s fledgling WRC team and he was signed for its debut campaign. An experienced WRC campaigner, Gilsoul was awarded the prestigious WRC Co-driver of the Year accolade in 2016 after finishing second in that year’s championship alongside Neuville. They joined forces in the spring of 2011 and the partnership quickly blossomed with victory on the Tour de Corse, then a round of the IRC, in only their second event together. Moving to Hyundai Motorsport for 2014, Gilsoul helped to secure the team’s first victory on Rallye Deutschland that season, and Thierry is quick to praise his co-driver’s precision and matching skillsets in the cockpit. Hugely consistent and experienced, Sordo has amassed a legion of fans since arriving in world rallying 15 years ago. This asphalt specialist’s career began at the age of 12 in motocross and karting, but he also tried hillclimbing before moving to rallying and winning the Junior world crown in 2005. The Spaniard, who is reunited with former co-driver Carlos Del Barrio for 2018, scored his maiden WRC victory in Germany in 2013 and was signed by Hyundai Motorsport later that year. Since then he has been an integral part of the team. Sordo helped in Hyundai’s milestone DANI SORDO one-two result on Rallye Deutschland in 2014 and Date of birth: May 2, 1983 has since secured many more podiums. The vastly experienced del Barrio has co-driven for some of the biggest names in Spanish rallying. His career began in 1987 and he made his WRC debut in 1994 with Jesus Puras. They enjoyed tremendous success in their native Spain, winning three national titles. In 2004, del Barrio joined forces with Dani Sordo for an initial four-event campaign with the young Spaniard looking for an experienced co-driver. The pairing would reunite in 2011 for a longer WRC programme, which included three podiums and victory on the 2013 CARLOS DEL BARRIO Rallye Deutschland. The Finn, who was named the Finnish federation’s Future Rally Star in 2015 after winning the SM3 class in his national championship, was chosen to take part in the HMDP project after impressing the team during a rigorous evaluation process. As a result, he will undertake a programme of tests and WRC events in a Hyundai i20 R5 this season. Linnaketo’s co-driving career stretches back to 2004, when he began contesting events in his native Finland and neighbouring . He made his WRC debut in 2010 on Rally Finland, co-driving for Juha Laaksonen, and first teamed up with Huttunen in 2014 when they finished third in class SM3 on the Ralli in Finland. The pair had been introduced that summer in a meeting facilitated by the AKK Driver Academy and, of course, went on to national success the following year on home ANTTI LINNAKETO soil. Scott Noh – President Having held global roles within the Hyundai family since 1993, Mr Noh joined Hyundai Motorsport as President in March 2018 to oversee all areas of the operation, coordinating on a daily basis with in Korea. Julien Moncet – Engine Department Manager Moncet took over full management of the engine department in March of this year and now spearheads all engine programmes at the company’s Alzenau facility, including WRC and Customer Racing. ● Hyundai has developed constantly since entering the German market in 1991 and is among the strongest import brands in the country. ● A wholly owned subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Company since 2012, Hyundai Motor Deutschland had a 3.2 per cent market share through sales of more than 108,000 in 2017. That made Hyundai the third best-selling importer in Germany, with the Tucson, i30, i10 and i20 its most successful models. ● Hyundai Motor Deutschland has been the biggest importer of Hyundai vehicles in Europe since 2005. Both cars featured a few modifications for endurance racing: additional lights to ensure better running in the dark and a fast refuelling system. In qualifying one of the i30 N TCRs reached the endurance racing lap record and went on to score a great podium result with second on its Nürburgring 24 Hours debut. Elsewhere in the popular ADAC TCR Germany Series, Hyundai Team Engstler has two Hyundai i30 N TCRs competing. Using a 2.04-kilometre course, organisers are promising “the perfect view and a genuine arena feel” for fans. Meanwhile, the event-closing Power Stage, Bosenberg, finishes just outside the town. ● Other changes for 2018 include the new Panzerplatte stage on Saturday complete with the legendary Gina jump and live TV coverage. The Grafschaft test increases to 29.07km in length (from 18.35km in 2017) and will be used twice on Sunday, as part of the move to run the ever-challenging vineyard stages on Sunday rather than Friday in order to further increase the prospect of a dramatic final day. ● Based in Bostalsee, home until 2007 prior to its return last season, the event features 18 special stages over a competitive distance of 328.66km. ● Behind record nine-time winner Sébastien Loeb, Dieter Depping is the joint second most successful driver in the history of Rallye Deutschland with three victories, the same amount achieved by Sébastien Ogier. However, all the German driver’s successes came prior to the event’s elevation to WRC status in 2002. ● With Thierry Neuville’s home town St Vith just across the border in Belgium, this is effectively the star’s home rally, as well as that of Hyundai Motorsport, which is based in Alzenau some 200km away. ● Hyundai Motorsport took a memorable first WRC victory on Rallye Deutschland in 2014 with Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul heading a historic one-two finish in front of Dani Sordo and Marc Martí. It made Hyundai the first non-Citroën winner of the rally since it became a round of the WRC in 2002.
