Citroën and Loeb out to Score a Hat Trick! Rally Turkey (15 – 18 April 2010) – Presentation Citroën and Loeb out to score a hat trick ! Rally Turkey, which is back on the WRC calendar, has turned over a new leaf with a route laid out near Istanbul. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, winners of the event in 2004 and 2005, have but a single aim in mind, a third victory on the trot to increase their lead in the Drivers’ World Championship. The Citroën Total World Rally Team topping the Manufacturers’ classification since Rally Jordan, can also count on Dani Sordo and Marc Marti who are still after their first 2010 finish on the podium. Rally Turkey, which has been on the Rally World Championship calendar five times since 2003, has moved to Kemer near Istanbul for the 2010 event. It will be held mainly on the Asiatic continent with the stages and the service park in the Pendik district grouped together on the peninsula bordered by the Marmara sea, the Bosphorous and the Black Sea. Sébastien Loeb always loves the challenge posed by a new route and Rally Turkey should suit him down to the ground: “I’ve heard that the stages are fairly wide and quick so driving should be great fun. I also know that there are forty kilometres in asphalt on the second day. Obviously, our C4 WRCs will have gravel tyres but we didn’t have too many problems with this combination in Cyprus last year. As it’s a question of mixed stages, we’ll have to find the right rhythm when passing from one surface to the other.” Second in Sweden, victorious in Mexico and Jordan, the six-time world champion already has a 25-point lead over Jari-Matti Latvala, his closest rival, so he’s feeling confident about the fourth round: “Twenty- five points equals a victory. It’s always good to have an ace up your sleeve but the way the 2009 season panned out, reminded us that you can’t lose any points along the way. We’re going to start the rally with the firm intention of winning. As championship leaders we’ll be first out on the road again on the first day, but we’ll just have to see how important a role sweeping’s going to play in this event.” Dani Sordo’s fourth place in Rally Jordan gave Citroën the lead in the Manufacturers’ World Championship. In Turkey, the Spaniard will be aiming for a place on the podium: “After a couple of disappointing rallies in terms of results, it was important to boost my confidence. That’s what we did in Jordan with a few good times. At the end of the rally we opted for caution as the points for fourth place were vital for the team. I now want to take advantage of my new-found confidence to go for my first podium of the season. I’m sure that the C4 WRC will be very quick on this type of terrain.” Marc Marti is the only member of the team to have taken part in all the Turkish rallies. In 2003, he won the first event with Carlos Sainz (Citroën Xsara WRC). Three questions to Sébastien Loeb The 2010 season’s got off to a good start for you with a second place and then two victories. You’ve already built up a good lead… That makes me smile as some said that my second place in Sweden showed a drop in motivation on my part! Just so as there’s no misunderstanding, I have no intention of stopping the clock at fifty-six victories. What’s interesting is that the 2010 season doesn’t boil down to a duel between Mikko Hirvonen and me. There’s also Jari-Matti Latvala, who now seems able to combine speed and consistency, as well as Petter Solberg and Sébastien Ogier. They’ll all able to fight at the front and that includes Dani too. For the moment that plays in my favour but it could also make my job more difficult.” Rally Turkey is being held on a new route. What does that change for you ? “I’m going to have to concentrate a lot more during reconnaissance. When we’ve got our old notes and the route hasn’t changed all that much in relation to the previous event, I know where the major traps and bumps are and I don’t have to worry too much. In this case, we just fine-tune the details. When we reconnoitre a stage for the first time it’s a lot more complicated. At 70 km/h (NB: in reconnaissance, the speed is limited and checked by GPS), I have to try and imagine at what speed we’ll arrive there in the race to note the corners and the bumps. First time through in the rally we always give ourselves a bigger scare than usual! So it’s preferable to allow yourself a bit more leeway and then correct the notes for the second run.” Once again sweeping will be a sore point … “Yes, and I don’t like that very much. It’s a shame that all the attention is focused on this aspect rather than on the battle between the crews. My point of view hasn’t changed for over two years. I think that reversing the running order of the first fifteen on the second and third days is the best solution. There are no calculations to be made and everybody has to push from start to finish. The idea of using the shakedown as a form of qualifying to allow the drivers to choose their starting order makes sense too. Whatever! I just hope that the FIA will soon modify the regulations to give everybody a level playing field.” General information Rally Turkey (round 4/13) (15 – 18 April) Surface : gravel Place : Istanbul Practical info : The service park is on the Coast Road in Pendik, a quarter of Istanbul. The PC and the Media Centre are in the Green Park Pendik Hotel. There is a 1-hour time difference between Turkey (GMT+2) and France (GMT + 1). At 12h00 in Istanbul, it is 11h00 in Paris. On Friday 16th April, the first day of the rally, the sun will rise at 06h23 and will set at 19h44. In April, the temperature varies between 10°C and 20°C. The local currency is the Turkish (TRY), 1 € = 2,02 TRY. Technical info : The engines used in Turkey are the ones used in Mexico (already run) and in Portugal. Spare parts (gearboxes, differentials, front and rear cradles, steering racks and turbos) are those shared with Rally Mexico. Tyres: : 36 Pirelli Scorpion WRC Hard tyres will be given to each crew including 6 for the shakedown. Reconnaissance: It is scheduled for Tuesday 13th April from 7h30 to 18h40 and Wednesday 14th April from 7h30 à 18h00 with two runs maximum through each stage. Maximum speed allowed is 70 km/h unless a slower speed is indicated, and 30 km/h in the supespecial. Shakedown : Thursday 15th April between 8h00 and 12h00 in Kadilli on a 4,75 kilometre stage. Press Conference : Thursday 15th April at 13h30 in the Media Centre. Start : Thursday 15th April in Ayasofya at 17h30. Route :1104,15 km long with 358,84 timed km. 23 special stages (13 different). Timing : Day 1 – Friday 16th April : 431,81 km including 98,42 timed km (9 SS, 5 différent SS). Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

While Turkey is no stranger to the WRC, the event’s new home in Marmaris means an untried route for all manufacturer drivers and teams. And with the battle for both titles at a crucial stage with four rallies remaining, we can expect a very open and action-packed event in what is an important market for Hyundai: car production – including the road-going i20 – at its Izmit plant is 205,000 units per year. I was pleased that we were able to secure a podium result at our home rally in Germany last month. It means Thierry and Nicolas were able to increase their lead of the Drivers’ championship to 23 points, while Hyundai’s advantage over Toyota in the Manufacturers’ championship is 13 points. It was an eventful final morning in Germany, which unfortunately included a retirement for Dani and Carlos, ending their own podium charge. It was a pity for them after a strong weekend. They had the confidence and the speed, and we know they’ll take the positives ahead of their home rally in Spain next month. Thierry and Nicolas were there to pick up the position following Dani’s retirement with Andreas and Anders also moving up to sixth place. For Turkey, we welcome Hayden and Seb back to the team and we look forward to counting on their past performances and experience on gravel to boost our championship hopes on this event.

This came courtesy of a very welcome win for Thierry and Nicolas on Tour de Corse, which was our first of the season. We did of course inherit the victory as a result of Elfyn Evans picking up a puncture on the final Power Stage, but taking first place is naturally a positive thing for the team. Were it not for that misfortune, Thierry and Nicolas would have claimed second in Corsica, which would’ve been an encouraging result and is thanks to their fantastic efforts in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. But for a true win you have to be fastest and, on this occasion, we didn’t quite manage that. As a team, however, we have been pushing hard and this result will definitely act as a morale boost, even if we have to be clear with ourselves where we are performance-wise and where we need to be.     Starter field for Pirelli Star Driver Shoot Out Europe in Freistadt complete 19 teams from 19 nations will fight for two starting places for next year’s WRC High-calibre jury with superstars Walter Röhrl and Michele Mouton will decide Nineteen young drivers have been nominated by their national sporting authorities to contest the European Pirelli Star Driver Shoot Out, which will take place from 23-25 October in Freistadt, Austria. In addition to a driver being nominated by each European country organising either an FIA World Rally Championship or FIA European Rally Championship event, two drivers have also been selected by the Nacam Zone (Central America) and Codasur Zone (South America). The Pirelli Star Driver program is a worldwide search for five young rally drivers from the 2008 and 2009 FIA Regional Championships, with one driver emerging from each of the Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific regions. Following the European Shoot Out, two competitors will be selected from the European region. The successful drivers from each year will then contest six World Championship rallies the following season in a Group N or Super 2000 car supplied and serviced under an FIA contract with a specialist preparation company. In 2009, the Pirelli Star Drivers will compete in the rallies in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Finland, Spain and Great Britain. The two winners will be chosen based on their overall performance, irrespective of car and timed results, and part of the selection process will also be an interview held with each driver, in English, to assess their ability to communicate with the media.
