Following the 1-3 result last time out in Sardinia, is delighted to be in Jyväskylä to continue its quest for WRC title success. I was pleased for Dani and Carlos, who worked professionally throughout , that they secured the victory – although this was of course inherited following Ott Tänak’s problem on the , which also lifted Andreas and Anders into third place. Personally, I found the result quite difficult to accept. For the second time this season we achieved a victory that we did not earn on the road and we should not have to rely on the unreliability of others to secure these results. But after the hard work by all three of our crews, Dani and Andreas were able to put themselves in a position to capitalise on the situation. And so to Rally Finland, which is a very particular type of event that warrants an approach like no other on the calendar. It’s a huge challenge for teams and crews alike. With the championship battle entering a critical phase – and competition being so close among the manufacturers – we have brought and into our line-up for Finland. Craig has demonstrated his ability at this event in the past – finishing third in 2016 – and has a lot of experience, which will be invaluable to us as we continue our pursuit of both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ championships. Paul, of course, is a former Finland winner. We welcome Craig and Paul to Hyundai Motorsport for this rally and look forward to seeing what they can do alongside Thierry and Nicolas and Andreas and Anders. Hopefully this time we can challenge for an outright win on merit and be rightly proud of ourselves in the process. We’ve been looking for an opportunity to come back to the WRC since the end of last season. When it became available, I grabbed it with both hands. I can’t CRAIG BREEN wait to get started.” TEAM POSITION: Driver You know Rally Finland but what experience AGE: 29 do you have of your Coupe WRC? WRC STARTS: 59 “I have done a day of testing and I also did Rally where we finished fifth – it was good @Craig_Breen time behind the wheel.” What did you think of the car? /CraigBreenOfficial “I really liked it and it was doing all the things that I wanted it to. I didn’t have to do so many changes to the set-up. I was able to keep quite close to the reference of my team-mates. I felt really happy and confident in the car from the start.” Why do you think you were chosen to drive for Hyundai Motorsport in Finland? “My track record in Finland is not bad, getting on the podium in 2016, and of all the world championship rallies it’s probably the one I have most experience of and am most comfortable on. I’ve been quite consistent in the past, delivering points and results, and that’s what the team are looking for.” Have you set a target? “To do a good job for the team, simple as that. It’s very clear they are doing everything in their power to win a world title this year. For me, I just want to be there to score manufacturers’ points. They’ve given me this big opportunity and I need to repay them in the best way possible.” Are you a Rally Finland fan? “It’s incredibly fast in places with big, wide roads and jumps through the forests. It’s a special place and if you feel confident there, like you’ve got everything in hand and feel safe, you can really do some incredible things. But the most important part is to feel really confident so you can push. When I had my good results there I was in that zone and had that feeling, it just becomes very easy. I hope I can get a feeling like that this year.” Rally Finland August 01 - 04, 2019 HYUNDAI HAPPENINGS ● Hyundai Motorsport took its third victory of the 2019 WRC season in Sardinia prior to the summer break after a dramatic climax. Problems for rally leader Ott Tänak on the final Power Stage meant and were elevated to the top spot to claim their first victory for Hyundai and the second of their WRC careers. ●  and Anders Jæger-Amland moved up into third place following Tänak’s problem to claim their second podium of 2019 as part of a Hyundai Motorsport 1-3. Mikkelsen scored the maximum five points on the Power Stage and , who ended the rally in sixth place, picked up three extra points. ● The surprise result means Hyundai Motorsport has extended its lead in the WRC Manufacturers’ standings to 46 points over Gazoo Racing. Neuville retains third place in the Drivers’ table on 143 points, three behind Sébastien Ogier and seven adrift of pacesetter Tänak. ● Hyundai Motorsport has recruited Craig Breen for Rally Finland to bolster its championship ambitions. Breen, who took his first WRC podium in Finland in 2016, and co-driver Paul Nagle will join Neuville/ Gilsoul and Mikkelsen/Jæger-Amland for the high-speed event to add vital experience to the line-up. Running the number #42, Breen has visited the team’s Alzenau facility and completed a one-day test. He also contested to get up to speed for Finland. ● A two-part video of reigning WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup champion driving a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC on gravel in Sardinia has been released on Hyundai Motorsport’s IGTV channel. After enjoying a co-driving experience with Andreas Mikkelsen, Tarquini got behind the wheel with Hyundai Motorsport Team Director Andrea Adamo joining him for the ride. ● Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing celebrated a fourth WTCR victory of 2019 when won the first of three races on the streets of Vila Real in northern Portugal at the start of July. , in another N TCR, joined him on the podium in third position. ● Luca Engstler scored a maiden TCR Europe triumph when he won Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring in Austria in mid-July. Josh Files, who was victorious in Race 1 in a Hyundai i30 N TCR, heads the standings. The series resumes at Oschersleben, , from August 3-4. Rally Finland August 01 - 04, 2019 HYUNDAI IN NUMBERS 1967: Company founded in Korea and has gone on to establish sales networks in 190 countries and employs over 110,000 people. 10,000: Of those global employees, some 10,000 people work at Hyundai’s R&D base in the Korean city of Namyang. 50: Hyundai Motorsport’s hub in Alzenau, Germany, is located within a 50-kilometre radius of ’s HQ in Offenbach and Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical and Design Centre in Rüsselsheim. It’s home to more than 200 employees representing some 29 nationalities. 11: With crews allowed to select their own permanent car numbers for 2019, Thierry Neuville has opted for 11 as a reminder of the first time he and finished as championship runners-up in 2013: “It means a lot to us because it was our first strong season in WRC,” he explains. “Both Nicolas and I wanted the number 11, which also has the number one in it. We hope it will bring us success.” 89: Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jæger-Amland’s car number is partly based on their successful driving partnership. “It was a natural choice for us,” says the Norwegian. “It represents the year we were both born: 1989. We are good friends, we work together very well and this number seemed the perfect fit.” 19: Sébastien Loeb and ’s car number was an obvious choice, given that this season marks the 20thanniversary of their WRC debut. But as he explains there were other reasons for the decision: “The number 19 is the birth date of my daughter, Valentine. It’s also representative of the one JWRC title and nine WRC titles that I have acquired over the years, which is nice.” 6: Dani Sordo, meanwhile, is sticking with a car number that has served him well. “I chose the number six because it’s what I’ve been using in recent seasons with Hyundai and it has brought us some good results,” says the Spaniard, who is co-driven by Carlos del Barrio. “We have nice memories using this number, so maybe it will bring us even better results this season!” 143: Neuville has made his 2019 title ambitions clear with victory in Corsica and Argentina, plus podium finishes in , Sweden and Portugal, helping him to amass 143 points in the Drivers’ championship. 52: Sordo’s win on Rally Italia Sardegna, along with Mikkelsen’s third-place finish, means Hyundai Motorsport has now scored 52 WRC podiums since 2014. In Sardinia, Sordo and Mikkelsen took Hyundai’s 12th double podium and its 13th win in total. 5.2: Hyundai Motorsport has fans around the world who follow its efforts in the WRC and Customer Racing through social media, with over 5.2 million likes on Facebook. The team also has 73,400 followers on Twitter and more than 233,400 on Instagram. Rally Finland August 01 - 04, 2019 N BRAND ● Hyundai Motor’s high-performance N brand enforces the company’s goal to create vehicles that match up to the high standards of excellence expected, but are as fun to drive as they are practical. ● N represents two important elements. Firstly, the Namyang district in South Korea where ’s global R&D base is located and the N brand was born. Secondly, the Nürburgring race track in Germany, which is home to Hyundai’s Technical Center and used to hone the N vehicles. Meanwhile, the N logo itself is also a graphical representation of a classic race track chicane; a tight serpentine turn in the road. ● The N name and reputation have become established in global motorsport. Four came in 2017, but while no driver bettered his total that season, he would have to settle for second to Sébastien Ogier, something he did in 2016 and 2018 when he lost out on ’s final-round decider. Having enjoyed huge success at junior level before stepping up to the WRC in 2009, the Belgian finished second in 2013. That achievement caught the eye of Hyundai’s fledgling WRC team and he was signed for its debut season in 2014. Gilsoul’s WRC adventure began in 2007, two seasons before Neuville’s step up to world level, while the Belgians did not join forces until 2011. The partnership quickly blossomed, however, with victory on the , then a round of the IRC, in only their second event together. Their move to Hyundai Motorsport for 2014 has so far produced nine wins while Gilsoul was awarded the prestigious WRC Co-driver of the Year accolade in 2016 after finishing second in the championship. Having joined Hyundai Motorsport for three late- season events in 2017, Mikkelsen is embarking on his second full campaign with the squad this year following a frustrating 2018, which the Norwegian completed with a solitary podium to show for his efforts. This season is proving better, with Mikkelsen achieving his best result for the team thus far after finishing second in Argentina and then claiming third place in Sardinia. A successful skier at youth level, Mikkelsen switched to when injury curtailed a promising career. Relocating to the UK for 2006, he was a winner ANDREAS MIKKELSEN shortly after getting his driving licence following his 17th birthday. Jæger-Amland has enjoyed a rapid rise to rallying’s top level having started his career in 2014 in his native Norway alongside Bernt Kollevold. He made his world championship debut that year with in Spain before going on to contest a mix of mainly Junior WRC and European championship events the following season, scoring five podiums including a win in the former. A second-generation rally driver, self-confessed fan and aficionado, ex-karter Breen won the WRC Academy and SWRC titles in 2011 and 2012 before joining the Rally Academy for a long and successful stint in the ERC. That led to a part-programme with in the WRC for 2016. He didn’t disappoint with a podium in Finland and fifth place in Corsica. Five top-five WRC finishes followed in 2017 before Breen returned to the WRC podium in Sweden in early 2018. A Rally Finland winner, Nagle guided to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title in 2009, a partnership that continued with in the WRC in 2011. Nagle first joined forces with Breen in 2012 following the passing of Breen’s former co-driver Gareth Roberts. After helping his fellow Irishman to secure the SWRC crown in 2012, Nagle co-drove Andreas Mikkelsen for two world rounds in 2013 before he was reunited with Meeke at Citroën from 2014-2018. With six starts, including a famous victory in 2016, the event holds a special place in the Irishman’s heart. These are his Place Notes. It’s probably the highest profile rally in the world championship and, if you ask anyone, particularly the fans, it’s probably the one event they all want to go to. And if you win Finland, the next thing to win is the world championship, it’s that important. My first memories of Rally Finland came from watching Colin McRae on TV from back home in Ireland when he was having all those crashes in the Subaru but kept on going. I thought at the time it was a crazy, high- speed event with cars flying 20-30 metres high. But it really stood out for me and it quickly became one of my must-do rallies. It wasn’t until 2011 that I first competed in Finland and I soon realised that it’s a very hard rally, particularly for a co-driver. Even though it’s a well organised event, the timing of pacenotes is fiercely important. It’s not like Corsica where you’re calling pacenotes constantly. In Finland you are calling notes at 170 or 180kph, not as often and the distances are coming at you in the blink of an eye. But when everything is working correctly with the car and the confidence it’s enjoyable. Winning in 2016 was a huge achievement. Not many non-Finns have won Finland and it was an incredible feeling standing on the top step of the podium. It’s going to be difficult coming back in for the most specialised and fastest rally in the world in a car we don’t have much experience with. It’s going to be a huge undertaking when you’ve got boys who have been competing all season. But we’ve been getting into different cars and going well this year, although the world championship is another level again. Our knowledge is a huge advantage. We are just getting to know the team and you’re always a bit anxious, but we know the event and Jyväskylä very well, and we are confident because of that. It will be difficult going into shakedown on Thursday morning with a new team and a new car, but we’re both massively experienced and we’re going to be doing our best for Hyundai. The Moksi, Urria, Ässämäki and Äänekoski stages also feature on leg one before a re-run of Harju. ● Saturday is the rally’s longest day with more than 132 kilometres of timed action. It begins with the 14,42-kilometre Pihlajakoski test, which includes approximately 10 kilometres of road never previously tried on Rally Finland. ● Following Päijälä, a revamped Kakaristo includes a section not used since 1997, while Leustu completes the penultimate day’s schedule. ● Twin visits to and the jump-filled Ruuhimäki provide the challenge on the final day with the second run of Ruuhimäki forming the rally- deciding Power Stage. ● Until won in 1990, no non-Nordic driver had ever claimed victory on Rally Finland, which began life as the Jyväskylän Suurajot (the Jyväskylä Grand Prix) in 1951 and was a founding round of the World Rally Championship in 1973. ● With seven wins, Marcus Grönholm remains the most successful driver in the event’s WRC history. also triumphed on seven occasions, although three of his victories predated the world championship era.
