Starterfeld Für Pirelli Star Driver Shoot out Europe in Freistadt Starter field for Pirelli Star Driver Shoot Out Europe in Freistadt complete 19 teams from 19 nations will fight for two starting places for next year’s WRC High-calibre jury with superstars Walter Röhrl and Michele Mouton will decide Nineteen young drivers have been nominated by their national sporting authorities to contest the European Pirelli Star Driver Shoot Out, which will take place from 23-25 October in Freistadt, Austria. In addition to a driver being nominated by each European country organising either an FIA World Rally Championship or FIA European Rally Championship event, two drivers have also been selected by the Nacam Zone (Central America) and Codasur Zone (South America). The Pirelli Star Driver program is a worldwide search for five young rally drivers from the 2008 and 2009 FIA Regional Championships, with one driver emerging from each of the Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific regions. Following the European Shoot Out, two competitors will be selected from the European region. The successful drivers from each year will then contest six World Championship rallies the following season in a Group N or Super 2000 car supplied and serviced under an FIA contract with a specialist preparation company. In 2009, the Pirelli Star Drivers will compete in the rallies in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Finland, Spain and Great Britain. The two winners will be chosen based on their overall performance, irrespective of car and timed results, and part of the selection process will also be an interview held with each driver, in English, to assess their ability to communicate with the media. Rally Turkey, which is back on the WRC calendar, has turned over a new leaf with a route laid out near Istanbul. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, winners of the event in 2004 and 2005, have but a single aim in mind, a third victory on the trot to increase their lead in the Drivers’ World Championship. The Citroën Total World Rally Team topping the Manufacturers’ classification since Rally Jordan, can also count on Dani Sordo and Marc Marti who are still after their first 2010 finish on the podium. Rally Turkey, which has been on the Rally World Championship calendar five times since 2003, has moved to Kemer near Istanbul for the 2010 event. It will be held mainly on the Asiatic continent with the stages and the service park in the Pendik district grouped together on the peninsula bordered by the Marmara sea, the Bosphorous and the Black Sea. Sébastien Loeb always loves the challenge posed by a new route and Rally Turkey should suit him down to the ground: “I’ve heard that the stages are fairly wide and quick so driving should be great fun. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage. Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years.
