Pat Kennelly

Pat started his career in Aer Lingus as an aircraft mechanic, spending his first two years here in Bolton Street studying in the aeronautical department before mov- ing to the airport to complete his apprenticeship. However, his real passion was cars and in his spare time he built a rally car to compete first in night navigation events before moving to stage rallies in an Escort RS2000. In the late 80’s he got an opportunity to follow his dream and moved to Brussels to join Mazda Motorsport, to build cars for the . Some years later, he moved to (Mitsubishi Motorsport) in England where he became responsible for the building of the test cars. It was a busy schedule but a hugely exciting time, carrying out testing around the world and then driving the chase car on events in both the World & Asian Pacific Championships, work- ing with drivers such as , , Timo Salonen, Kenneth Erikson & Tommi Makinen. However, the testing sparked an interest and identified a gap in his engineering theory, so he left full time work and returned to college, firstly completing a Dominick Tuite HNC followed by a BSc at night. He then moved to Lotus where he worked as a Senior Development Engineer, Memorial Lecture 2015 helping to develop the new Lotus V8 twin turbo engine for the Esprit. He contin- ued in his spare time, running an AE86 Corolla Twin Cam on Irish & Manx tarmac rallies. Having married and started a family, a return to Ireland was on the cards and with very few automotive opportunities available he returned to aviation, joining PWAI (Pratt & Whitney) firstly as a Production Engineer and then as R&D man- Design & Development of ager. During this time he gained an MBA and in 2003 was offered his first role at director level, becoming Engineering Director for Keenan’s in Carlow. an 8x8 off road vehicle He has held roles as Operations Director at Upright International, overseeing En- gineering, Production, Quality & Supply chain functions, and Engineering Direc- tor for Anord Control Systems, who are one of the leading suppliers of Electrical by Switchgear in Ireland & UK. However in March of 2014 he finally returned to the automotive industry when he was appointed as Engineering Director for Timoney in Navan. Timoney are a leading supplier of Suspension and Driveline systems for heavy duty off-road vehicles and carry out vehicle design projects for customers around the world. Dominick Tuite was a member of the Department of Transport Engineering  Introduction/Welcome until his untimely death in September 1999. He was appointed Head of Department in 1990. Prior to becoming Head, he served as both lecturer and by Declan Allen Assistant Head within the department. Among the strengths he brought to these positions, the following in particular stand out. A contagious enthusi- asm for all aspects of the automotive and wider transportation industries; the desire to enhance and develop the department in his charge through the engagement in research and the provision of programmes of the highest pro- fessional and academic standards; and last but not least a genuine concern  Lecture by Pat Kennelly for the welfare and future prospects of the students.

Dominick was a firm believer in establishing and maintaining links with in- dustry. He was committed to an on-going process whereby the world of work  Response and vote of thanks by and the world of study would complement each other. To this end he was in- volved in numerous committees and working parties and had strong ties with John Kelleher the professional bodies, trade associations; Government departments and agencies.

In more specific terms Dominick is remembered for his contribution over  Presentations to Mary Tuite and Pat many years to the National Apprentice of the Year Competition. He estab- lished links with other EU countries and institutes of education in the areas Kennelly of education and training. He developed Ireland’s first honours degree dedi- cated to the transport industry.
