1968 − 1984 Colin: the Busy Baby by Margaret Mcrae
1968 − 1984 Colin: the busy baby by Margaret McRae Colin Steele McRae was born on August 5, 1968. It was a Monday. He was born in the William Smellie Maternity Hospital in Lanark. And he was a much-wanted child – a first grandchild for my parents, however Jim’s mum and dad already had two. It’s from Jim’s mum that Colin took the name Steele – it was her maiden name. We were living in Blackwood, about five miles from Lanark, in those days. And it was to the house in Vere Road, Blackwood that we would have taken Colin home – if we hadn’t still been renovating the cottage at the time. Instead, we went and stayed with my parents for two or three weeks while we finished the work on the house. This was actually quite a God-send as my dad wasn’t feeling too well at the time and having a newborn baby in the house really took his mind off things. He spent all of his time, just focused on the baby. Right from the off, Colin was a busy baby and, unfortunately for us, not a baby to whom sleep came easily or quickly. I think he stayed in our room for about seven weeks, before we knew the time had come for him to go into his own room. I don’t think Colin really slept through the night completely for about two years. Alister, his younger brother, was something of a revelation by comparison and slept really quickly. It’s fair to say, Colin wasn’t an easy baby. -

Pat Kennelly
Pat Kennelly Pat started his career in Aer Lingus as an aircraft mechanic, spending his first two years here in Bolton Street studying in the aeronautical department before mov- ing to the airport to complete his apprenticeship. However, his real passion was cars and in his spare time he built a rally car to compete first in night navigation events before moving to stage rallies in an Escort RS2000. In the late 80’s he got an opportunity to follow his dream and moved to Brussels to join Mazda Motorsport, to build cars for the World Rally Championship. Some years later, he moved to Ralliart (Mitsubishi Motorsport) in England where he became responsible for the building of the test cars. It was a busy schedule but a hugely exciting time, carrying out testing around the world and then driving the chase car on events in both the World & Asian Pacific Championships, work- ing with drivers such as Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Timo Salonen, Kenneth Erikson & Tommi Makinen. However, the testing sparked an interest and identified a gap in his engineering theory, so he left full time work and returned to college, firstly completing a Dominick Tuite HNC followed by a BSc at night. He then moved to Lotus where he worked as a Senior Development Engineer, Memorial Lecture 2015 helping to develop the new Lotus V8 twin turbo engine for the Esprit. He contin- ued rallying in his spare time, running an AE86 Corolla Twin Cam on Irish & Manx tarmac rallies. Having married and started a family, a return to Ireland was on the cards and with very few automotive opportunities available he returned to aviation, joining PWAI (Pratt & Whitney) firstly as a Production Engineer and then as R&D man- Design & Development of ager. -
