Chapter 8 The End of the Medieval Diocese In May 1554, King Gustav Vasa met with the four remaining members of the Diocese of Turku’s Cathedral Chapter: Deacon Petrus Ragvaldi, Canon Canutus Johannis, Canon and Acting Bishop Mikael Agricola, as well as rector of the Cathedral School in Turku, Paulus Juusten. Paulus Juusten described the meeting as follows: “After all other matters were discussed, His Majesty invited them [the members of the chapter] to a yard outside of Gripsholm Castle. He said that the prelates of Sweden’s cathedrals no longer needed to go to Rome to receive an episcopal appointment, because this right was held by His Majesty at home in Sweden.”1 The king’s statement of what had been his policy for some thirty years likely did not surprise his guests. They might have wondered why the king was devoting such ceremony to the proclamation of a well-established procedure. Then he made an announcement that did earn a special stage. According to Juusten’s chronicle, “the renowned lord king saw it good to divide Finland into two dioceses, namely Turku and Vyborg.”2 Gustav Vasa named Mikael Agricola the bishop, or to use the king’s title, ordinary, of the new rump Diocese of Turku. The king appointed Paulus Juusten leader of the new Diocese of Vyborg. The partition of the diocese was yet another attempt by the king to weaken the episcopacy. Moreover, the partition initiated and facilitated an intense period of royal reform of the church in a part of the kingdom that had pre- viously avoided many aspects of it. -

ZfO JECES 67 ı 2018 ı 3 ı 325-348 325 East of Stockholm, North of Warsaw: Finland, Estonia and the Early Modern Composite States in the Baltic Region Miia Ijäs-Idrobo* ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Östlich von Stockholm, nördlich von Warschau: Finnland, Estland und die frühneuzeitlichen composite states im Ostseeraum In diesem Beitrag wird untersucht, wie Schweden und Polen-Litauen in ihrer Eigenschaft als composite states in der Frühen Neuzeit ihre Länder verwalteten. Besondere Aufmerk- samkeit wird den Territorien des modernen Estland und Finnland geschenkt, da die Herr- schaft über diese Länder im Zuge des Konflikts zwischen Sigismund Vasa als dem König von Polen-Litauen (1587-1632) und Schweden (1593-1599), und seinem Onkel Karl von Södermanland, dem späteren König Karl XII. (1604-1611), umstritten war. Während in der bisherigen Forschung Schweden und Polen-Litauen als in politischer und religiöser Hin- sicht sehr unterschiedlich gegolten haben, soll hier möglichen Gemeinsamkeiten aufgrund ihres Charakters als composite states nachgegangen werden. Beide Staaten strebten da- nach, ihre Territorien sowohl politisch als auch kulturell zu vereinheitlichen. Die finni- schen und estnischen Gebiete lagen von Stockholm und Warschau aus gesehen in der Peri- pherie, waren aber für diese Machtzentren von strategischer Bedeutung. Obwohl Finnland und Estland in geografischer Hinsicht nicht weit voneinander entfernt lagen, erlauben sie in ihrer Funktion als zusammengesetzte Monarchien unterschiedliche Perspektiven für die Erforschung frühneuzeitlicher Reiche und königlicher Machtansprüche. Obwohl die Be- zeichnung als „Großherzog von Finnland“ in die königlichen Titel Schwedens Eingang fand, war Finnland ein integraler Bestandteil des schwedischen Königreichs und genoss zu keinem Zeitpunkt Autonomie innerhalb des Reiches. Estland hingegen sah sich mehrfach Einverleibungsversuchen seitens Polen-Litauens und Schwedens ausgesetzt, die jedoch stets nur eingeschränkt erfolgreich waren. -

Kuningas ja lääniülemad avaldasid Rootsis 16. saj alates korraldusi, mida levitati kas rahvakoosolekutel või kirikukantslist ette lugedes. See tava kodifitseeriti 1686. a kirikuseadusega. Korralduste ettelugemine muutus jumalateenistuse osaks ja nende kuulamine oli kõigile kohustuslik. Kuna riigi idaosas Soomes ei osatud rootsi keelt, hakati korraldusi soome keelde tõlkima, mistõttu Rootsi võimuperioodi lõpuks moodustasid sellised tekstid umbes neljandiku kõikidest korraldustest. Selle süsteemi tugisammasteks muutusid Kantseleikolleegiumi juures tegutsenud soomendajad ja kuninglik trükikoda, kellel oli korralduste publitseerimise privileeg. Tekstidest olid kõige tähtsamad 3–4 korda aastas esitatud palvepäevaplakatid, mis sisaldasid aktuaal- seid uudiseid kõnealuse kirikupüha jaoks Piibli tekstide valguses. The Peace Treaty of Fredrikshamn and Its Aftermath in Sweden and Finland to Some Extent, the Chronological Manifestation of the Consequences
The Peace Treaty of Fredrikshamn and its Petri Karonen Aftermath in Sweden and Finland By the end of 2009, in both Finland and Sweden the bicentennial commemora- tion of the dissolution of the common realm was drawing to a close. At the same time, what was being celebrated was the birth of an autonomous Finland. These commemorations have offered a rare occasion to explicate the annexation of Fin- land into the Russian Empire and the issues involved in it. Rather less to the fore has been the union of Sweden and Norway, which was also a consequence of the Finnish War of 1808–1809, at least when seen in a pan-European context.1 In what follows, I shall concentrate on analyzing the Peace Treaty of Fredriks- hamn of September 1809 and its consequences. Thus I will not deal with the Finnish War as such. It is widely accepted that the war in Finland was one of the side effects of the French Revolution and the chain of European-wide unrest and revolutionary upheaval that followed in its wake. We also know that relations between Sweden and Russia were relatively good at the turn of the nineteenth century, and indeed again soon after 1809. All these factors have a bearing on the Peace Treaty of Fredrikshamn. The war continued in Norrbotten and Västerbotten in the spring and summer of 1809, after Finland had been occupied by the Russian forces in the autumn of 1808. The Swedish defence was not made any easier by the fact that the com- manders of the main Swedish forces left their units to join the heated political game that was being played out in Stockholm, the consequence of which being Gustavus IV Adolphus’ deposition in March 1809.
