  • Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences
FROM PRINT TO SCREEN: ASIAN AMERICAN ROMANTIC COMEDIES AND SOCIOPOLITICAL INFLUENCES Karena S. Yu TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 2019 ______________________________ Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. Department of Radio-Television-Film Supervising Professor ______________________________ Chiu-Mi Lai, Ph.D. Department of Asian Studies Second Reader Abstract Author: Karena S. Yu Title: From Print to Screen: Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences Supervisor: Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. In this thesis, I examine how sociopolitical contexts and production cultures have affected how original Asian American narrative texts have been adapted into mainstream romantic comedies. I begin by defining several terms used throughout my thesis: race, ethnicity, Asian American, and humor/comedy. Then, I give a history of Asian American media portrayals, as these earlier images have profoundly affected the ways in which Asian Americans are seen in media today. Finally, I compare the adaptation of humor in two case studies, Flower Drum Song (1961) which was created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Crazy Rich Asians (2018) which was directed by Jon M. Chu. From this analysis, I argue that both seek to undercut the perpetual foreigner myth, but the difference in sociocultural incentives and control of production have resulted in more nuanced portrayals of some Asian Americans in the latter case. However, its tendency to push towards the mainstream has limited its ability to challenge stereotyped representations, and it continues to privilege an Americentric perspective. 2 Acknowledgements I owe this thesis to the support and love of many people. To Dr. Mallapragada, thank you for helping me shape my topic through both your class and our meetings.

Transcending Fun & Surprising Language and Genre Pop-ups FOREWORD The ritual is familiar to Singaporeans. Standing at a school assembly or a public function, you’d sing the lyrics of community tunes. They include 'Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng' (Voices From The Heart), 'Munnaeru Vaalibaa' (Forward O Youth) and yes, 'Rasa Sayang' (Loving Feeling). Memories of belting out that last song welled up while my team and I were planning this year’s Singapore Writers Festival. But do we really know what the song means? Are we paying lip service to multi-lingualism, of getting to know each other? That is why we chose Sayang as the theme for this year’s festival. Found in Malay, Tagalog, Sundanese and various languages of the Malay Archipelago, the word ‘sayang’ means love and tenderness. Significantly, it also refers to regret Yeow Kai Chai and pity, delivered with a wistful sigh. We savour the nuances, its shades of loves Festival Director and losses. The word provides the guiding principle for our programming: What do we love and what sacrifices have we made? We are heartened, for instance, that you have embraced our inter-disciplinary approach last year, and we continue to do so this year, with productions, collaborations and lectures.

Media Release VIRTUAL SUPPORT AND ACTIVITIES TO HELP MORE SENIORS DURING CIRCUIT BREAKER SINGAPORE – 05 May, 2020: The Infocomm Media Development Authority (“IMDA”) has expanded its programmes to help more seniors receive the knowledge, training and support they need to use technology to stay engaged, productive and entertained during this circuit breaker period. This is part of IMDA’s continual efforts in enhancing online accessibility to enable individuals, especially seniors, to carry out their daily tasks and social activities from their homes. “The face-to-face programmes supporting seniors in their digital journeys, like the Digital Clinics, have been suspended during this circuit breaker period. IMDA has thus worked with our industry and community partners to explore alternative modes of helping our seniors acquire digital skills, which will support their digital lifestyles during the circuit breaker period and beyond.” said Ms Koh Li-Na, Assistant Chief Executive, IMDA. New content and activities for seniors To reach seniors in the comfort of their homes, IMDA has partnered NLB and Mediacorp to develop season 3 of the “Learn Together With Me” show, an 8-part series where host Dennis Chew and his celebrity guests will share tips on common digital services and applications like making video calls with your family, using PayNow for cashless payment, reading online and how to use teleconsultation services to see a doctor online. The programme will be aired on Channel 8 at 2.30pm on weekdays between 20 to 29 May. IMDA is also collaborating with live stream star Max Kee, a wholesaler of Lian Huat Seafood, to make online shopping more relatable to seniors.
