The locality represents a prime example of an inner-city locality that has been reimagined and transformed by a series of powerful actors including, but not limited to, an increasingly financialised real-estate sector, a tourism industry promoting Kreuzberg as a destination for higher-income groups, and a city-state government embracing and promoting entrepreneurial approaches to urban governance.

MEDIA RELEASE INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH EVENT OF THE LIBERATION ROUTE EUROPE HIKING TRAILS A unique international trail initiative to keep the memory of WWII alive Brussels, 15 July 2021 – The LRE Foundation is happy to announce the next evolution of the Liberation Route Europe, a certified Council of Europe Cultural Route connecting places and people that mark Europe’s liberation from occupation during World War II. The launch event will take place on 22 July at 3 pm CEST when the Foundation will present the brand new European-wide system of hiking trails along the Liberation Route Europe. Developed in collaboration with hiking associations across Europe, the new hiking trails link museums, memorials, cemeteries and historical sites along the Allied Forces’ advance in the last phase of WWII and aim to stretch for 10.000 km. The hiking experience is accompanied by the new Liberation Route Europe website and travel planner that allows the public to read and listen to many stories about WWII and plan their journey along the hiking trails. Rémi Praud, Managing Director of the LRE Foundation: “We are excited to launch this new system of hiking trails connecting regions, sites and historical places across Europe. These trails are a new meaningful, and sustainable way to experience the Liberation Route Europe. This is only the beginning. We are excited to expand to new regions and countries in the upcoming years.” On the morning of 22 July, the LRE Foundation, in collaboration with the Best Defence Foundation, will escort seven U.S. veterans who served in Germany in 1945 for a visit with press to the German-Russian Museum Berlin- Karlshorst.

  • How to Get to the Climate Analytics Berlin Office
How to get to the Climate Analytics Berlin office Our office is located at Friedrichstraße 231, 10969 Berlin, Germany, and can be accessed through the inner courtyard – entrance B. Our offices are located on the second and third floor – we recommend visiting the second floor office first, as the majority of our team is based there. • Interrogation Nation: Refugees and Spies in Cold War Germany Douglas Selvage / Office of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records
Interrogation Nation: Refugees and Spies in Cold War Germany Douglas Selvage / Office of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records In Interrogation Nation: Refugees and Spies in Cold War Germany, historian Keith R. Allen analyzes the “overlooked story of refugee screening in West Germany” (p. xv). Building upon his previous German-language study focused on such screening at the Marienfelde Refugee Center in West Berlin (Befragung - Überprüfung - Kontrolle: die Aufnahme von DDR- Flüchtlingen in West-Berlin bis 1961, Berlin: Ch. Links, 2013), Allen examines the places, personalities, and practices of refugee screening by the three Western Powers, as well as the German federal government, in West Berlin and throughout West Germany. The topic is particularly timely since, as Allen notes, many of “the screening programs established during the darkest days of the Cold War” (p. xv) continue today, although their targets have shifted. The current political debates about foreign and domestic intelligence activities in Germany, including the issue of refugee screening, echo earlier disputes from the years of the Bonn Republic. The central questions remain: To what extent have citizenship rights and the Federal Republic’s sovereignty been compromised by foreign and domestic intelligence agencies – largely with the consent of the German government – in the name of security? BERLINER KOLLEG KALTER KRIEG | BERLIN CENTER FOR COLD WAR STUDIES 2017 Douglas Selvage Interrogation Nation Allen divides his study into three parts. In Part I, he focuses on “places” – the various sites in occupied West Berlin and western Germany where refugees were interrogated. He sifts through the alphabet soup of acronyms of US, British, French, and eventually West German civilian and military intelligence services and deciphers the cover names of the institutions and locations at which they engaged in screening activities during the Cold War and beyond.

  • Project: Natural and Artificial Systems for Recharge and Infiltration (NASRI)
Project: Natural and Artificial Systems for Recharge and Infiltration (NASRI) Induced by well abstraction, surface water infiltrates into Berlin aquifers and is used for drinking water production. The advantage of bank filtration is the capability of the subsurface to remove contaminants. Because a large proportion of the surface water in Berlin originates from treated effluents, the system is a semi-closed water cycle relying partly on indirect wastewater reuse. Processes accompanying bank filtration and artificial recharge are currently studied in Berlin within a multidisciplinary project initiated by the KWB (Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin) as a cooperation of the Berlin Water Works (BWB), the Technical and the Free University of Berlin, the German Environmental Protection Agency (UBA) and the Institute of Ecohydrology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) named Nasri (Natural and Artificial Systems for Recharge and Infiltration). It focuses on the behaviour and removal of, for example, pathogens, microsystens, organic pollutants as well as pharmaceutically active compounds during underground passage. Within NASRI, the Free University evaluates the hydrogeology, hydraulics, geochemistry and hydrochemistry of the field sites. Wastewater indicators (e.g. Cl-, B, EDTA, Gd-EDPA), stable isotopes (18O, 2H) and Tritium/Helium age dating are used to calculate travel times to drinking water wells and proportions of bank filtrate in individual wells. The tracer results serve as a basis for the interpretation of the fate and behaviour of potential contaminants (e.g. drug residues or organic pollutants) analysed by project partners. http://www.kompetenzwasser.de/Natural-and-Artificial-Systems-for.23.0.html?&L=1 Project: Evaluation of transport processes in the Oderbruch aquifer using the tritium/helium age dating method Detailed groundwater monitoring was carried out within a previous research project in an anoxic, river recharged, pleistocene aquifer in the Oderbruch polder in Germany.
