Conflict between King and Church had led, sixteen years before, to the murder of Becket by Henry's knights, in Canterbury Cathedral. As part of his penance, Henry had founded monasteries, over one of which (Witham in Somerset) he appointed Hugh, a Carthusian monk from France, to preside. It was a brilliant choice. Hugh was admired, trusted, and loved. Everyone, including Henry himself, knew that his integrity was beyond question. Hugh took steps to see that the actual election was made by the canons of Lincoln, technically their right, and an example of that sensitivity that was one of his characteristics as an administrator.

HE Chapter House at St. Albans was probably T planned and commenced by Paul de Caen, the first Norman Abbot and builder of the great Nor- man church, since he (and his three successors) are all stated to have been buried within its walls. But the merit of its completion, or perhaps of its reconstruction, must be assigned to his fourth successor, Robert de Gorham, the 18th Abbot, who ruled the Monastery from 1151 to 1166, and who (amongst other works) is recorded to have built up the Chapter House " from its foundations." Abbot Robert appears to have been a relative—pos- sibly a son or nephew—of the 16th Abbot, Geoffrey de Gorham, who had died in 1146. Their family has per- petuated its name in the estate of Gorhambury, where this Abbot erected a residence; but they derived it orig- inally from Gorram in Maine, which was the home whence they sprang. Geoffrey de Gorham was a scholar, and (as evinced in later life by the superstitious defer- ence which he paid to the visions of his hermits) a man of a rather mystical and impressionable turn of mind. But he was not a monk of first choice. He had come over from Normandy at the invitation of his predecessor, Abbot Richard de Albini, in order to become the Master of the Abbey School. But his journey was delayed, and the vacancy had been filled before his arrival, so Geoffrey started another school in the rising town of Dunstable, and there he wrote and produced a Miracle Play, setting forth the legend of St.

    York Minster’s Chapter House and its Painted Glass Narratives Volume 1 of 3 Ann Hilary Moxon PhD University of York History of Art December 2017 Abstract This thesis focuses on the late thirteenth-century narrative glazing scheme of the chapter house in York Minster and the political and religious context of its design. Created as an intrinsic and integrated part of one of the most elaborate and important buildings in the period, the glass has suffered interventions affecting both its appearance and the positions of its narrative panels. By examining the glass in the context of contemporary visual and textual material, it has been possible to reconstruct the original order of the panels and to identify the selection of episodes the lives of the saints, some for the first time. The study has demonstrated the extent to which the iconography was rooted in liturgy and theology relevant to the period which, in turn, reflected the priorities of a dominant group among the active members of Chapter for whose use the building was constructed and, by extension, the contemporary Church. Further, the glass shows strong Mariological themes which reflected features in the rest of the decorative scheme and the architecture of the chapter house, indicating that the glazing scheme may have been conceived as part of the architectural whole. The conclusions are supported by parallel research into the prosopography of the contemporary Chapter which additionally suggests that the conception of the programme may have had its roots in the baronial wars of the

    Experiencing the Chapterhouse in the Benedictine Abbey at Pomposa The Benedictine Abbey at Pomposa is located in the Po valley east of Ferrara, on the isolated and marshy coastline of the Adriatic Sea.1 Established in the eighth century, it was an active and vibrant complex for almost a thousand years, until repeated outbreaks of malaria forced the monks to abandon it in the seventeenth century (Salmi 14). Notable monks associated with the abbey in its eleventh-century heyday include the music theorist Guido d’Arezzo (c. 991-after 1033), the pious abbot St. Guido degli Strambiati (c. 970-1046), and the writer and reformer St. Peter Damian (1007-72) (Caselli 10-15). The poet Dante called on the abbey, as an emissary for the da Polenta court in Ravenna, shortly before his death in 1321 (Caselli 16). His visit coincided with a great period of renewal under the administration of the abbot Enrico (1302-20), during which fresco cycles in the Chapterhouse and Refectory were executed by artists of the Riminese school.     Chester Cathedral: High-level repairs (1 of 3 projects funded) Awarded £300,000 in November 2014 The need Chester applied for £637,465 in round 2 of the fund for high-level repairs to pinnacles and for emergency lighting. The cathedral was awarded £300,000 in September 2014 for the pinnacles work only as this was considered the more urgent of the two projects. The 2012 Quinquennial Inspection had highlighted this as a priority, and a more recent inspection by the Cathedral Architect had shown that the pinnacles were in various states of decay, some needing emergency works as they were obviously unsteady and able to be rocked by hand and vulnerable to a strong gust of wind All have the same construction and it was the opinion of the Cathedral Architect that even those currently in a good state would, in time, decay to the same point of near-collapse. Any such fall would represent a risk to the public and would be likely to cause damage to the roof area on which it fell. Outcomes The building condition has been improved; the high level repairs have remedied sources of leaks in the roof which is now watertight. The cathedral has been able to host First World War commemorations. Photo credit: Donald Insall Associates. Economic and social impact Local contractors were used and the project provided training in stonework and leadwork. The cathedral is now safe for visitors. It is the largest exhibition space within Chester and plays a leading role in its cultural life. In 2017 it hosted part of the world-class ARK exhibition of contemporary and modern sculpture, featuring 90 works of art by 50 celebrated sculptors, which would not have been feasible with an unsafe roof.

The Dean’s Eye and Bishop’s Eye, the stained glass windows at the north and south ends of the great transept, reinforce the authority of the Dean and Bishop of the cathedral in the maintenance of the Christian ideal of the just, or the good. Most importantly, all of the details of the architecture of the ca- thedral reinforce the intellectual comprehension of the just or the good on the part of the worshipper.

  • The Reuse of the Monastic Buildings at Chester, 1540-1640
    THE REUSE OF THE MONASTIC BUIEDINGS AT CHESTER, 1540-1640' Alan Thacker I St Werburgh's abbey was surrendered by its last abbot, Thomas Clarke, in January 1540 and refounded as the cathedral church of the new see of Chester in August 1541, when the entire precinct was handed over to the newly constituted dean and chapter.2 It is clear that in the short term at least there was a considerable measure of continuity between the old monastery and the new cathedral. Though, as with other cathedrals of the new foundation, the dedication was changed (from St Werburgh to Christ and the Blessed Virgin), and though some eighteen months elapsed between dissolution and resurrection, the break was more apparent than real. There was, for example, continuity (albeit briefly) in personnel. At the dissolution the old monastery contained some twenty-eight monks, of whom ten were made members of the new cathedral establishment. The abbot became dean, the prior and three other monks prebendaries, and a further five monks petty canons. So of the senior clergy of the new foundation only three were not ex-monks of St Werburgh's.     Columbia University – Summer Program in Venice Summer 2018 Art in Venice – AHIS O4430 Venice's unique geographical location in the reflective waters of the Adriatic and at the crossroads between East and West has had a profound impact on all aspects of Venetian life and culture. This course will investigate the artistic production of the Lagoon City between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. The compelling works of Venetian artists, such as Carpaccio, Bellini, Giorgione and Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, as well as the great civic and religious monuments, including the Palazzo Ducale, the great mendicant churches, and the Basilica di San Marco, will be considered in light of the sophisticated political and social systems of the Venetian Republic. Issues such as the development of the distinctive urban fabric, the invention of a civic iconography, the role of the artist, and the Venetian workshop practices, as well as the impact of the Islamic world, and private and corporate patronage, will be examined.
