The study focuses on the fitful— and often futile—efforts of the French, the English, the Spanish, and the Americans to establish plantation agriculture in Natchez and its environs, a district that emerged as the heart of the “Cotton Kingdom” in the decades following the American Revolution. -

Therefore, in order to perform a simple search of the GENERAL records of Arkansas’ Native People in the National Archives Online Catalog it is best to focus on National Park Service historic place applications, Osage and Quapaw records before 1824, and records of the Five Civilized Tribes as they traveled across Arkansas. Use the following search terms: Removal (Advanced Search, using Record Group 75) and “Arkansas Indian” (include quotation marks). The much broader search, Arkansas Indian, will have to be narrowed further by date range and document type. There are several great resources available for general information and material for kids about the Native People of Arkansas, such as the Native Languages and National Museum of the American Indian websites. -

IF THE WATERS WERE TO SHRUG EXTRACTIVE VIOLENCE, ERASURE AND THE POLITICS OF RESISTING IN THE SETTLER COLONIAL PRESENT DILLON OZUNA THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE M.A. DEGREE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF BERGEN FALL 2019 IF THE WATERS WERE TO SHRUG EXTRACTIVE VIOLENCE, ERASURE AND THE POLITICS OF RESISTING IN THE SETTLER COLONIAL PRESENT DILLON OZUNA THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE M.A. DEGREE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF BERGEN FALL 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis is based on my multi-sited fieldwork (January–September 2018) surrounding an anti-pipeline resistance camp led by four indigenous women in southwest Louisiana opposing the new Bayou Bridge Pipeline; the southward extension of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline that spurred mass protests at Standing Rock from mid-2016 to early-2017. The four women are of Diné and Cherokee, Sicangu Lakota (Sioux), Choctaw, and Houma descent respectively. The Bayou Bridge Pipeline, financed by banks such as Norway’s DnB, would transport crude oil to the black church community of St. James—an impoverished community long inundated with toxic pollution in one of the most densely industrialized regions in the Western Hemisphere, named Cancer Alley—for the manufacturing of plastics and various consumer commodities. The women operate as allies to the black community of St. James and other Cancer Alley communities who are themselves stark opponents of the pipeline, highlighting solidarity across marginalized social groupings. The allies of these women that I lived among and studied hail from other indigenous communities across the country, while others that I lived among are non-indigenous sympathizers with politics that are primarily leftist- oriented or anarchistic. -

Having the Chickasaw Explorers participate in the archaeological field excavations was an experience that I hope will become more common in research projects where the ancestors of living peoples are involved. Lieb, Director of Chickasaw Nation Archaeology and Field Studies, who introduced me to the site of Charity Hall, worked as a liaison with the landowner, and facilitated the project with tools and labor. I thank the landowner, A.G. Doss, who graciously allowed us to return year after year to his property and gave us open access to perform the fieldwork we deemed necessary to delineate and understand the site. Creative Dissertation Jubah and Nashoba: An Artful History Submitted by Theodore Cecil DeCelles Department of Interdisciplinary Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Montana Fall 2019 Doctoral Committee: Advisor: Kathleen Kane Wade Davies George Price Prageeta Sharma Heather Cahoon i ABSTRACT This creative dissertation unites art and history by writing a play using extensive historical research. The main body of work focuses on events surrounding the Natchez Revolt of 1729. The Natchez nation and colonial Louisianans attempted to accommodate each other by reaching a middle ground. Nonetheless, incivility culminated in a massacre at Fort Rosalie. The Natchez experienced profound sociopolitical changes that resulted in a downgrade of female power. North American history asserts many female chiefs interacted with colonial male leaders. Even so, female chiefs have remained at the margins of history.
