FAUNA of AUSTRALIA 9. FAMILY MICROHYLIDAE Thomas C. Burton 1 9. FAMILY MICROHYLIDAE Pl 1.3. Cophixalus ornatus (Microhylidae): usually found in leaf litter, this tiny frog is endemic to the wet tropics of northern Queensland. [H. Cogger] 2 9. FAMILY MICROHYLIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Microhylidae is a family of firmisternal frogs, which have broad sacral diapophyses, one or more transverse folds on the surface of the roof of the mouth, and a unique slip to the abdominal musculature, the m. rectus abdominis pars anteroflecta (Burton 1980). All but one of the Australian microhylids are small (snout to vent length less than 35 mm), and all have procoelous vertebrae, are toothless and smooth-bodied, with transverse grooves on the tips of their variously expanded digits. The terminal phalanges of fingers and toes of all Australian microhylids are T-shaped or Y-shaped (Pl. 1.3) with transverse grooves. The Microhylidae consists of eight subfamilies, of which two, the Asterophryinae and Genyophryninae, occur in the Australopapuan region. Only the Genyophryninae occurs in Australia, represented by Cophixalus (11 species) and Sphenophryne (five species). Two newly discovered species of Cophixalus await description (Tyler 1989a). As both genera are also represented in New Guinea, information available from New Guinean species is included in this chapter to remedy deficiencies in knowledge of the Australian fauna. HISTORY OF DISCOVERY The Australian microhylids generally are small, cryptic and tropical, and so it was not until 100 years after European settlement that the first species, Cophixalus ornatus, was collected, in 1888 (Fry 1912). As the microhylids are much more prominent and diverse in New Guinea than in Australia, Australian specimens have been referred to New Guinean species from the time of the early descriptions by Fry (1915), whilst revisions by Parker (1934) and Loveridge (1935) minimised the extent of endemism in Australia. -

Twelve species were found at two sites below 100 m near Kwerba, a small village adjacent to the Mamberamo River. Thirteen species were recorded at 'Moss Camp' at 1650 m in the Foja Mountains. Of these Hemicordulia ericetorum was previously only known from the central mountain range while Oreaeschna dictatrix was only known from Lake Paniai and the Cyclops Mountains. It is likely that more genera and species now known onlyfrom the central mountain range occur in the Foja Mountains and probably also the Van Rees Mountains. However one species, Argiolestes spec. nov. is probably endemie to the Foja Mountains. Although this collection includes only a small fraction of the diversity likely to be present in the mountains it is nonetheless of interest as it represents the first records of dragonflies from the area. -

E-mail: [email protected] Memasukkan: Januari 2015, Diterima: Juni 2015 ABSTRACT Hylarana celebensis (Peters, 1872) is an endemic frog to Sulawesi, the species being a member of family Ranidae. The presence of the frog in its habitat is easily detected from its advertisement call; males usually call in a chorus, they call to each other in a large group. Bioacoustic of calls of a typical individual male of H. celebensis have not been described in detail, although it is very easy to find this species in freshwater swamps, permanent ponds, or slow-flowing waters in the lowland areas. The purpose of the bioacoustic analysis on H. celebensis’s calls that were recorded at Bahodopi area is to build a reference collection to be compared with H. celebensis’s bioacoustics from other regions in Sulawesi. Because of the wide distribution of this frog in Sulawesi; genetic structure of H. celebensis population may also follow the genetic structure of Ingerophrynus celebensispopulation. Calls of H. celebensis have two types of calls, i.e. pure tone and pulse; however, pure tones have three variation, namely pure tone type 1, pure tone type 2 and pure tone type 3; however pulsed call has only one type. Here we investigate the evolution of montane endemism, ecology and body size in a clade of direct-developing frogs (Choerophryne, Microhylidae) from New Guinea. Methods. Phylogenetic relationships were estimated from a mitochondrial molecular dataset using Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches. Ancestral state reconstruction was used to infer the evolution of elevational distribution, ecology (indexed by male calling height), and body size, and phylogenetically corrected regression was employed to examine the relationships between these three traits. -

Editor in charge: Raffael Ernst Abstract Two new microhylid frogs in the genera Choerophryne and Oreophryne are described from the Foja Mountains in Papua Province of Indonesia. Both are small species (males 15.9 – 18.5 mm snout-urostyle length [SUL] and 21.3 – 22.9 mm SUL respectively) that call from elevated positions on foliage in primary lower montane rainforest. The new Choerophryne species can be distinguished from all congeners by, among other characters, a unique advertisement call consisting of an unpulsed (or very finely pulsed) peeping note last- ing 0.29 – 0.37 seconds. The new Oreophryne species belongs to a group that has a cartilaginous connection between the procoracoid and scapula and rattling advertisement calls. Its advertisement call is a loud rattle lasting 1.2 – 1.5 s with a note repetition rate of 11.3 – 11.7 notes per second. Saving the Atlantic Rainforests
2 Mission World Land Trust–US is dedicated to buying and protecting lands that conserve rare or endangered species and endangered ecosystems rich in biodiversity. We work largely in the rainforests and cloud forests of the Latin American tropics, home to over 50% of the planet’s biodiversity and one of the world’s highest conservation priorities. Methods WLT-US focuses on tangible projects with long-term impacts for conservation, such as land purchase for the creation of new natural protected areas. We work in alliance with World Land Trust in the United Kingdom, and always work in close partnership with carefully selected local conservation groups, who own and manage the reserves that we help to create. Accomplishments Since our founding in 1989, we and our partner WLT in the UK have saved almost 1 million acres of high priority lands! In 2008, WLT-US bought and conserved 15,000 acres protecting some of the most endangered species and critical habitats in the tropics. Our program exceeded $2 million, used to buy and manage nature reserves of exceptional biodiversity value with local partners. Often we pay $100 an acre or less for these critical areas! (+33) 1 45 68 40 02 fax (+33) 1 45 67 58 69 PREFACE At a Tropical Montane Cloud Forest workshop held at Cambridge, U.K. in July 1998, 30 scientists, professional managers, and NGO conservation group members representing more than 14 countries and all global regions, concluded that there is insufficient public and political awareness of the status and values of Tropical Montane Cloud Forests (TMCF). The group suggested that a science-based “pop-doc” would be an effective initial action to remedy this. What follows is a response to that recommendation. It documents some of the scientific information that will be of interest to other scientists and managers of TMCF, but not over- whelming for a lay reader who is seeking to become more informed about these remarkable ecosystems.
