Questions / Comments: [email protected] AFN 121 - History of African Civilizations (Same as HIS 121) Description This course examines African "civilizations" from early antiquity to the decline of the West African Empire of Songhay. Through readings, lectures, discussions and videos, students will be introduced to the major themes and patterns that characterize the various African settlements, states, and empires of antiquity to the close of the seventeenth century. The course explores the wide range of social and cultural as well as technological and economic change in Africa, and interweaves African agricultural, social, political, cultural, technological, and economic history in relation to developments in the rest of the world, in addition to analyzing factors that influenced daily life such as the lens of ecology, food production, disease, social organization and relationships, culture and spiritual practice. -

The Influence of the Kingship Institution on Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife: A Case Study of the Late Ooni Adesoji Aderemi by Akinyemi Yetunde Blessing [email protected] Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria Abstract In this paper an attempt is made to examine the mythic narratives and ritual performances in olojo festival and to discuss the traditional involvement of the Ooni of Ife during the festivals, making reference to the late Ọợni Adesoji Adėrėmí. This paper also investigates the implication of local, national and international politics on the traditional festival in Ile-Ife. The importance of the study arrives as a result of the significance of the Ile-Ife amidst the Yoruba towns. More so, festivals have cultural significance that makes some unique turning point in the history of most Yoruba society. Ǫlợjợ festival serves as the worship of deities and a bridge between the society and the spiritual world. It is also a day to celebrate the re-enactment of time. Ǫlợjợ festival demands the full participation of the reigning Ọợni of Ife. The result of the field investigation revealed that the myth of Ǫlợjợ festival remains, but several changes have crept into the ritual process and performances during the reign of the late Adesoji Adėrėmí. The changes vary from the ritual time, space, actions and amidst the ritual specialists. It is found out that some factors which influence these changes include religious contestation, ritual modernization, economics and political change not at the neglect of the king’s involvement in the local, national and international politics which has given space for questioning the Yoruba kingship institution. -

Aside from the acclaimed Yoruba homogeneity and the notion of Ile-Ife as the cradle of Yoruba civilization, relationships between Ife indigenes and other communities in Ife Division (now in Osun State, Nigeria) have generated issues due to, and influenced by, politi- cal representation. Where allegations of marginalization have not been leveled, accommoda- tion has been based on extraneous considerations, similar to the ways in which outright exclu- sion and/or extermination have been put forward. Not only have suspicion, feelings of outright rejection, and subtle antagonism characterized majority–minority relations in Ife Division/ Administrative Zone, they have also produced political-cum-administrative and territorial ad- justments. As a microcosm of the Nigerian state, whose major challenge since attaining politi- cal independence has been the harmonization of interests among the various ethnic groups in the country, the Ife situation presents a peculiar example of the myths and realities of majority domination and minority resistance/response, or even a supposed minority attempt at domina- tion. -

São deuses tricksters que questionam, invertem ou quebram regras e comportamen- tos. São associados aos processos de fertilidade e, sob a forma de um falo ere- to, cultuados em altares públicos localizados na frente das casas, nos mercados ago., 2019 ago., – e nas encruzilhadas. Quando seu culto foi “descoberto” pelos europeus iniciou- se um processo no qual essas divindades foram associadas ao imaginário do mal, da desordem e da repressão sexual (ao demônio cristão e muçulmano) e, 468, mai. 468, – posteriormente ao mundo pré-moderno (primitivo), ao imaginário das forças antagônicas da modernidade, entre as quais estava, sobretudo, o pensamento mágico presente nas religiões que não passaram pelo processo da secularização ou burocratização. A associação entre o falus no altar de Exu-Legba e o das iconografias do diabo pode ser revelador desse processo. Os ritos pagãos, assim vistos e con- denados pela Igreja católica na Europa e entre os povos catequizados fora dela, incluíam as cerimônias de fertilidade nas quais era comum o uso de emblemas associados aos órgãos sexuais masculinos e femininos. -

IBADAN HISTORY FROM LAGELU ERA AND THE IMPACT OF POLITICAL CRISIS IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY By: ESV. Tomori M.A. anivs, rsv, mnim Email: [email protected] 1.1 Background History of Lagelu Lagelu (a.k.a. Oroo Apatamaja), a war-chief (Jagun Osun) from Dalegu compound, Ajamapo area of oke Eso in Ile-Ife was the founder of Ibadan. He was the grandson of Orunto (or Obalufe), the prime minister of Ile-Ife and Head of Ooni-in-council. His mother was the daughter of Ooni Luwo Gbagida, the only female in Ife history who married Chief Obaloran, a member of the council of Ooni of Ife (Chief (Dr.) M.A. Fabunmi, 1985). (a) Benin Army Invaded Iddo Island When he was still in Ife, a legend had it that he led Ife army as Jagun Osin to assist the children of Olofin Ogunfunminire, the progenitor of the Awori’s with the king of Gbagura referred to as Agura fought against the Benin army who invaded Iddo Island near Lagos founded by the Aworis. The children were; Olumegbon, Oluwa, Onitona, Onitoolo, Elegusi, Aromire, Olooto and Ojora. The Aromires later swam across the Lagoon to Lagos Island in the middle of the 16th century for fishing and farming (Oluremi I. Obateru, 2006). They constituted the “IDEJO” who are the traditional land owners and White Cap Chiefs in Lagos. When a Portuguese expedition led by Ruy de Sequeira landed there, Eko was changed to Lagos in 1472A.D. Thereafter, about the 16th century, during the Alaafin Onigbogi (1530-1542), Lagelu “Oroo Apatamoja”; led a group of men and women and interested people out to found a new settlement, known as EBA ODAN later known as Ibadan. -
