  • OE Threat Assessment: United Arab Emirates (UAE)
DEC 2012 OE Threat Assessment: United Arab Emirates (UAE) TRADOC G-2 Intelligence Support Activity (TRISA) Complex Operational Environment and Threat Integration Directorate (CTID) [Type the author name] United States Army 6/1/2012 OE Threat Assessment: UAE Introduction The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is important because of its location near the Strait of Hormuz and its willingness to work with Western nations. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow body of water that separates the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman, through which 20% of the world’s oil passes annually. The UAE, seven emirates that work under a federalist structure, also is an important hydrocarbon producer in its own right with the world’s seventh largest known oil reserves and the eleventh largest known natural gas fields. The UAE allows both the U.S. and France to operate military bases in the country from where the two countries support their military activities in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East. Political Seven former members of what was known in the 19th century as the Trucial or Pirate Coast currently comprise the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In order of size, the emirates are: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al Qaywayn, Ajman, Al Fajayrah, and Ras al Khaymah. Ras al Khaymah joined the UAE in February 1972 after the other six states agreed on a federal constitution the year before. The UAE, with its capital in Abu Dhabi, is a federation with specified powers delegated to the central government and all other powers reserved to the emirates. Due to the prosperity of the country, most of its inhabitants are content with the current political system.

The Second Gulf War, or to be more precise the “follow-on stabilisation effort”, had led to a new category of vehicle, namely the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected, or Mrap as it became universally known. As this definition is very much US-related we prefer that of “mine-protected vehicles”, which includes the notion of protection against improvised explosive devices, which became the main risk for troops moving in theatre. There has been a significant rise in the use of UGVs, artificial intelligence, virtual training and survivability equipment. Also, Active Protection Systems (APS) are being developed in lighter, cheaper and more accurate forms, supporting their case as a popular solution for the future battlespace. With all of the aforementioned in mind, the deployment of MBTs is still seen as a necessity by most in spite of climbing demand for light protected mobility. Ahead of International Armoured Vehicles 2019 conference, Defence IQ has compiled this market report to outline global key programmes and future requirements across all types of armoured vehicles. In January, Senior Representatives from the below countries will share their current requirements and challenges with the audience made up of over

Given that the requirements of modern armoured vehicles are driven by so many conflict- ing factors, perhaps they are the defence establishment’s own camels. Mobility, protection and firepower as core requirements are by no means confined to Main Battle Tanks, but the emergence of uninformed, or “claimed” national industrial strategic capabilities; the tightening of budgets; the growth of “zero-casualty” politics; and the ability to destroy an enemy at drone’s length all impact global demand for vehicles with the full suite of capa- bilities now available. That “full suite” costs space and manoeuvrability, as crews of 4x4 vehicles in combat have, historically, sometimes found to their detriment.

  • Armoured Vehicles Global Inventories 2016-17 Introduction
ARMOURED VEHICLES GLOBAL INVENTORIES 2016-17 INTRODUCTION As detailed in Defence IQ’s 6th annual Global Armoured Vehicles Market Report (2017), the armoured vehicles market is projected to reach $15.17 billion in 2017. According to the report’s proprietary survey data, confidence in the global armoured vehicle market has rebounded after a temporary downturn, underpinned by steadily rising defence budgets, new contract opportunities and recent big ticket government investments. In addition to survey data and analysis the report also uncovered a continued demand for landmine/IED protection worldwide and growing demand for Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and Light Protected Vehicles. Among the global community, there are also seen increasing dangers of directed energy and other types of anti-vehicles systems that demand innovative and cost-effective solutions as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have risen in the past year as the world’s focal countries for armoured vehicles business. This follow-on report details global vehicle inventories – in easy-to-read table format – in so far as it is possible to calculate. Of course, some nations and regions are less transparent than others about the exact units stocked in their military vehicle fleets, but we hope the information enclosed can help readers garner a greater understanding of the current situation for end-users. This report has been issued ahead of the 17th Annual International Armoured Vehicles conference, taking place in London, UK, on 23-26 January. A registration form can be found at www.internationalarmouredvehicles.com. Need more information? • Armoured Vehicles Market Report 2014 FOREWORD
Defence IQ ARMOURED VEHICLES MARKET REPORT 2014 FOREWORD In 1914, the British War Office placed an order for a Holt tractor – one of the most famous forebears of the military battle tank – and began trials at Aldershot in the hopes of delivering a solution to the stalemate of trench warfare through the use of an armoured ‘land ship’. One hundred years on and Aldershot will again be host to the world’s largest conference dedicated to armoured vehicles, the very descendants of that Holt tractor. Modern armoured vehicles will take to the Long Valley Test Track as part of the International Armoured Vehicles 2014 exhibition and conference. Ahead of this key event, Defence IQ has published this report to provide a broad overview of how the international industry looks today. Two overriding trends struck me while reading this report: First, there is a discernible shift – a far more palpable one than I’ve seen in previous iterations of this annual report – of armoured vehicle demand in the growing economies of the Middle East, Africa and Latin America while the more established markets of North America and Europe suffer the effects of the economic downturn. And second, it is clear that, despite protestations to the contrary over recent years, the era of the tank is certainly not dead. While new technologies and ‘smart’ platforms continue to roll off the production line, the survey data and analysis in this report demonstrate that there will always be a requirement for armoured vehicles, be it for expeditionary missions or peacekeeping operations. Despite the tough economic context, nations continue to spend considerable sums on maintaining capable armoured and protected mobility forces.
