Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below). -
NORTHERN STARS MUSIC from the NORDIC and BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars
NORTHERN STARS MUSIC FROM THE NORDIC AND BALTIC REGIONS NAXOS • MARCO POLO • ONDINE • PROPRIUS • SWEDISH SOCIETY • DACAPO Northern Stars Often inspired by folk tradition, nature, landscape and a potent spirit of independence, the music of Scandinavia, Finland and the Baltic states is distinctive and varied, with each country’s music influenced by its neighbours, yet shaped and coloured by its individual heritage. Traveling composers such as Sweden’s Joseph Kraus introduced 18th and early 19th century classical trends from Germany and Italy, but with national identity gaining increasing importance as Romantic ideals took hold, influential and distinctive creative lines were soon established. The muscular strength of Carl Nielsen’s symphonies grew out of the Danish nationalist vigor shown by Friedrich Kuhlau and Niels Gade, extending to names such as Per Nørgård today. Gade was a teacher of Edvard Grieg, who owes his position as Norway’s leading composer, at least in part, to the country’s traditional folk music and the poignant lyricism of the Hardanger fiddle. The music of Finland is dominated by the rugged symphonies of Jean Sibelius, and his Finlandia ensured his status as an enduring national symbol. Sibelius successfully combined the lessons of Viennese romanticism with a strong Nordic character, and this pragmatic approach has generated numerous contemporary giants such as Aus Sallinen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Kalevi Aho and Kaija Saariaho. Turbulent history in the Baltic States partially explains a conspicuous individualism amongst the region’s composers, few more so than with Arvo Pärt, whose work distils the strong Estonian vocal tradition into music of striking intensity and crystalline beauty. -

December 2013 List Blu-Ray New Releases
tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 DECEMBER 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer, The first thing to say this month is a big ‘thank you’ to all who have continued to support us throughout 2013. CD selling is not an easy business in the 21st century and we truly appreciate your ongoing custom. Despite it being December, we have plenty to offer you this month! New releases are in abundance, albeit without so many of the usual ‘high profile’ releases that usually appear each month. Titles to point out are Stephen Hough’s brand new Brahms Piano Concertos on Hyperion, the final Ring Cycle instalment (Gotterdammerung) from Janowski on Pentatone and a couple of new Britten issues from LSO Live and NMC. There are also plenty of historical items to look at, with the availability of these labels improving week by week. Special offers include further titles from Warner/EMI, a selection of great value re-issues from Sony, wonderful choral recordings from The Sixteen and The Tallis Scholars, two historical labels in the shape of Myto and Andromeda, plus the extraordinarily strong catalogue from Finnish label, Ondine. With Christmas around the corner, we have also compiled a selection of festive titles to be found on p.11. Finally, a couple of information points: last posting dates for Christmas can all be found on p.12. Some of you further afield may not receive this until after the dates have passed - we generally find that these dates are pretty conservative, so provided you get your order to us asap, you may find that delivery still occurs before Christmas. -

The classical music industry may be changing, but dying it certainly is not. This can also be demonstrated by the wealth of recordings shortlisted for the Gramophone Awards this year. Many of you will now have seen the winners announced and special congratulations must go to the Pavel Haas Quartet - very deserved winners of the Disc of the Year with their recording of two quartets by Dvorak. A reminder of each category winner has been provided on page 10, with reduced prices available on all for a limited time. Boxsets are heavily featured in our special offer listings this month - pages 11 to 18 include titles from DG, Decca, Hyperion, Warner, Regis, Sony, Supraphon and more. Labels such as Linn, Harmonia Mundi and CPO also have their catalogues reduced and DVD offers include rich pickings from C Major Entertainment, Accentus and ICA Classics. Offers that we have sadly not had the space to print include the complete MDG and Pentatone catalogues. Both of these labels feature highly recommended recordings and we are currently able to offer 10% off all titles until 21st December. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if we can help in any way! A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets
SECOND EDITION A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets Exploring unjustly neglected masterpieces An eBook by Lyle Chan published by Vexations840 a mysterious organization dedicated to classical music at its finest Second Edition, February 2013 © 2013 Vexations840 Pty Ltd PO Box 309, Edgecliff NSW 2027, Australia [email protected] you will enjoy visiting www.forgottenstringquartets.com 2 Introduction to the Second Edition As we stated in our First Edition, A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets was intended to take advantage of the swiftness of e-publishing and be revised quickly towards a second and subsequent editions. This Second Edition is the result of the very encouraging emails we’ve received. Most of your emails have been simply about how much you’ve enjoyed the coverage and found the eBook useful. Some of you have also brought additional works to our attention, many of which we’ve included here. This new edition adds another 10 quartets which amounts to nearly 3 hours of listening time. We’ve chosen a balance of little-known works by famous composers like Samuel Barber, Kurt Weill, Franz Liszt, Beethoven (yes, even this titan of a composer has neglected works) as well as composers whose entire output, not just their string quartets, is largely forgotten, such as Chevalier de Saint-George and Malipiero. And one of the new quartets is in fact a multicomposer suite of 16 movements from Russia called Les Vendredis, certainly one of the most interesting discoveries we’ve made. Since the First Edition, the internet app called Spotify has been widely adopted by the classical music community and so we have begun to include Spotify listening links – we’ll start with new works being added to this Second Edition, and retrospectively add links for the rest.
