Every conference organized by the international yeast community in the last two decades (Stellenbosch 1997, Rimini 1999, Prague 2001, Gothenburg 2003, Bratislava 2005, Melbourne 2007, Manchester 2009, Olsztyn 2011, Frankfurt 2013, Levico 2015) was guided by high scientific standards and was an opportunity to exchange ideas, renew old acquaintances, make new friends and promote collaborations in research. The programme of this conference has been also designed to provide an effective forum for discussing the progress of front-line yeast genetics and molecular biology research. The meeting also offers a chance to discover Prague which is indeed a focal point and heart of the continent. However, the city is not only a geographical centre of Europe, but also a place were for centuries different nations were mixing and different cultures were merging, influencing each other. Those who will walk through the narrow streets of old Prague will follow the history of Europe and its political, cultural and architectural streams. I trust that you will enjoy your stay in this city with its lively atmosphere and long tradition in hospitality. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the keynote and symposia speakers, to chairpersons of workshops as well as to all who will contribute by their presentation to workshops and poster sessions.

Piano Study Centre Piano Lecture and Master Class Opportunity to All Piano Students Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Levels Date: Saturday 22nd November from 4.00pm – 6.30pm Location: In Central London near Russell Square Theme of Lecture: The Craft of Practising (Free to our students) Please send e-mail: [email protected] to register your interest Send text message or Phone: 07950 491461 Professor: Philip Fowke Pianist, Professor and Senior Fellow of Keyboard at Trinity College of Music (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance) The Craft of Practising Philip Fowke writes: Gordon Green, my revered and much beloved teacher, used to refer to the craft of practising. This made an impression upon me, all the more vivid when he likened the pianist to a master joiner with his box of tools, sharpened, polished and oiled. As the joiner adds to his collection of tools over the years becoming accustomed to some yet discovering new ones along the way, so the pianist has to build up a box of treasured tools to facilitate the process of learning and practising. Philip Fowke discusses what we mean by “practice”, what it entails, the analysis of fingering, the avoidance of needless repetition, and strategies for overcoming technical or musical problems. The myth of legato fingering will also be addressed as will the inappropriate use of the word “tension”. Economy of movement, choreography of the keyboard and posture will also be discussed. Extra information from PSC Famous British-born pianist Stephen Hough’s piano teacher was Gordon Green. Stephen and Professor Philip studied with the same piano teacher.

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).

  • Report on the Foreign Policy of the Czech Republic 2002
Introduction In the international arena, the Czech Republic strives to act as a democratic and politically, economically and socially stable Central European country, pursuing not only its own particular interests but also assuming its share of responsibility for the development of Europe and the entire international community. The international environment in which the Czech Republic pursues its foreign policy is a product of the interaction of a number of factors – sovereign countries, associations of countries at different levels of integration in international organisations and institutions, and non-governmental entities, ranging from non- governmental organisations to various non-transparent lobbying groups not respecting the rules of international relations, including organised crime groups and terrorist organisations. The role, import and influence of these factors fluctuate, often within a very short time span. Following the end of the cold war and the disintegration of the bi-polar world, and as a result of changes in the security environment, the intensification of globalisation processes, the liberalisation of the global economy, the increasing mutual dependence of countries, and the accelerating development of science and technology, there has been significant growth in the importance of multilateral co-operation within the framework of international organisations and integration groupings. At the same time, in the face of new threats posed by certain non- transparent entities, and terrorist organisations in particular, all international mechanisms designed to protect against such dangerous phenomena are rapidly gaining in importance. The Czech Republic, as a country which, by size and population, ranks among medium- sized countries in the European area, and as a country with an open economy, a high proportion of exports and services in the generation of its gross domestic product, and with limited natural resources, is markedly dependent on international co-operation.
