MUSIKPRODUKTION Press Info: Wilhelm Furtwängler Berlin Philharmonic MASTERst RELEASE THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL TAPES RIAS RECORDINGS 1 Live in Berlin (1947 - 1954) 12 CD-Box + Bonus-CD The majority of the concerts given by Wilhelm Furtwängler and the Berlin Philharmonic between 1947 and 1954 were recorded by the RIAS Berlin; all of these recordings are documented in this boxed set. The original tapes from the RIAS archives have been made available for the first time for this edition so these CDs also offer unsurpassed technical quality. Furthermore, some of the recordings are presented for the very first time, such as the Fortner Violin Concerto with Gerhard Taschner. These RIAS recordings are documents of historical value: they contain a major part of Furtwängler’s late oeuvre as a conductor, which was characterised by a high level of focus in different respects. Focus on repertoire which has at its core the symphonic works of Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner and is supplemented by works by Bach and Handel and also by topical composers of the time, including Hindemith, Blacher and Fortner: artists who were counted amongst the members of “moderate modernism” and who were not perceived to have been tainted by the cultural politics of the National Socialists. Focus was also a guiding principle in Furtwängler’s concert programmes which always feature a particular idea. His interpretations also demonstrate extremely high levels of focus: concentration and focus for him meant a contem- porary decoding, a re-creation, which would express the fundamental content of a work. A number of works – the Third, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven as well as Johannes Brahms’ Third Symphony – are included in two interpretations. -

Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below). -

Analysis and Performance Problems of Vítězslava Kaprálová’S
ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS OF VÍTĚZSLAVA KAPRÁLOVÁ’S STRING QUARTET, OP. 8 (1935-1936) by MARTA BLALOCK (Under the direction of Clint Taylor) ABSTRACT Vítězslava Kaprálová might have been forgotten due to her untimely death during the World War II, however her music has resurfaced in the past decades and her name is well known in the Czech Republic. With no published edition of Kaprálová’s String Quartet, currently available instrumental parts and recordings vary from the original autograph. This study focuses on historical and theoretical analysis of the work, editorial suggestions, and performance issues. The original autograph is compared to two copyist manuscripts of individual parts as well as two available sound recordings.
