Furthermore studies of chamber music (string quartet), studies with Kiyoshi Okayama and Kazuki Sawa as well as with the Tokyo String Quartet, Vermeer Quartet, Panocha Quartet, Amadeus Quartet, Alban Berg Quartet, Artis Quartet and Prague String Quartet. 1997 1st prize and Prix Mercure at the International Summer Academy in Vienna, 1998 Prize of Honour at the International "Karl Klingler" Competition in Berlin, 1998 and 1999 Mical Music Prize at the Resonare Music Festival, Scholarship of the Matsuo-Foundation 1998 and 1999. The Decca Sound is a brilliant 50 album overview of analogue recordings that Decca produced in the pre-digital era. The beginnings of high fidelity, their ‘Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound’ became a worldwide hallmark of sonic excellence, bringing in a golden age of classical recorded music. Included in the box are celebrated recordings from the likes of Solti, Haitink, Kertesz and Dorati - recordings and performances that certainly still stand the test of time today. See p.2 for details. The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage is a series that has been closely followed by many collectors over the past few years, especially since the Monteverdi Choir’s move from DG to the wonderful presentation of the SDG label. For those who have eagerly picked up every volume, the complete collection in a single box may be superfluous, but for anyone who has simply dabbled, or maybe not even tried, it is a real treat. Coming in at £149.95, it is also a great saving on the c.£500 value of the individual items (especially bearing in mind that several volumes have now been deleted). See p.3 for details. An analysis of the opera, chamber music, and symphonic production of Czech music in London between 1984 and 1994 identifies how and whether the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution affected the firm position that Czech music culture had held in the capital of the United Kingdom. Key words: Czech musical culture, London, emigration, composers, the Velvet Revolution, 1989 The musical relations between the Czechs and London represent an important current issue. As the capital of the United Kingdom, London naturally takes the lead within the British cultural scene. With its population, budget, and institutional capacities, it is one of the world’s major social and cultural centres, and thanks to the high interest of London-based institutions in Czech music, it is also one of the world's top producers of Czech music. The current research examines how, if at all, the events of November 1989 influenced the position of Czech musical culture in London and the relationship between Czech and London musicians. To make up for the lack of activity by the record companies, plenty of great new offers have been arranged to help keep up interest though the summer months. One area in which the new releases certainly haven’t suffered is that of top-class piano recordings. This month sees new discs arrive from Benjamin Grosvenor, Mitsuko Uchida, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Howard Shelley. Shelley’s disc of Dussek Piano Concertos on Hyperion marks the beginning of a new series entitled ‘The Classical Piano Concerto’, following in the footsteps of their enormously successful ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series. It is a very promising start and we look forward to seeing what else Hyperion manage to dig up for future releases. In terms of special offers, August sees yet more great reductions from Decca and DG, this time in the form of opera recordings, the ever-popular ‘Originals’ series and a selection of titles from Herbert von Karajan (see also p.2 for a limited re-release of the Karajan Symphony Edition at a remarkable price). From the independent sector, we have managed to secure good discounts on the complete catalogues of Supraphon, Opera Rara, Alia Vox, NMC and C Major Entertainment (DVD and Blu-ray). Hopefully something to cover all tastes! Many of you are probably enjoying coverage of the BBC Proms concerts on the radio and television at the moment.
