AUGUST 2014 LIST Supraphon Karel Ancerl Edition at Just £7.88 Each tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 AUGUST 2014 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer, We have a bumper list for you this month, despite it being probably the quietest month of the year for new releases. To make up for the lack of activity by the record companies, plenty of great new offers have been arranged to help keep up interest though the summer months. One area in which the new releases certainly haven’t suffered is that of top-class piano recordings. This month sees new discs arrive from Benjamin Grosvenor, Mitsuko Uchida, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Howard Shelley. Shelley’s disc of Dussek Piano Concertos on Hyperion marks the beginning of a new series entitled ‘The Classical Piano Concerto’, following in the footsteps of their enormously successful ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series. It is a very promising start and we look forward to seeing what else Hyperion manage to dig up for future releases. In terms of special offers, August sees yet more great reductions from Decca and DG, this time in the form of opera recordings, the ever-popular ‘Originals’ series and a selection of titles from Herbert von Karajan (see also p.2 for a limited re-release of the Karajan Symphony Edition at a remarkable price). From the independent sector, we have managed to secure good discounts on the complete catalogues of Supraphon, Opera Rara, Alia Vox, NMC and C Major Entertainment (DVD and Blu-ray). Hopefully something to cover all tastes! Many of you are probably enjoying coverage of the BBC Proms concerts on the radio and television at the moment. If you hear anything new that sparks your interest, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will do our best to find a top- notch recording for you. The RECORDING Navigating, Coping & Cashing In Maze November 2013 Introduction Trying to get a handle on where the recording business is headed is a little like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? As Phil Sommerich points out in his excellent overview of “The 8 The Distribution Maze: Distribution Maze,” Part I and Part II, yes, there is a way, or rather, ways. But which Bring a Compass: Part II one is the right one? Sommerich lets us in on a few of the major players, explains 11 Five Minutes, Five Questions how they each work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. with Three Top Label Execs In “The Musical America Recording Surveys,” we confirmed that our readers are both consumers and makers of recordings.

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

Smith 3 Welcome Back What a time it has been! Our world has experienced unprecedented disruption since we last gathered in the spring of 2020 in our beautiful venues to witness exquisite music, dance, and theatre together. Throughout these many long and painful months of separation and isolation, I have been yearning for the time when we can be together once again. It appears that time is finally now upon us! I am absolutely thrilled to share our plans for celebrating the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s historic 25th anniversary season throughout the fall of 2021 and spring of 2022. Our silver anniversary season will feature a variety of acclaimed guest artists—some new to us and some returning favorites—with an equally wide variety of personal life experiences. They will come to us from across the United States and several different countries. Their experiences inform their work, and we will, for a brief moment in time, commune together as the universal languages of music, spoken word, and movement unite us in hope and healing. Not only has the world changed significantly since we first opened our doors 25 years ago, it has changed dramatically in the last year as we have endured the devastating impact of a global pandemic, social injustice, political uncertainty, and any number of other things.

“Music of Our Time” When I worked at Columbia Records during the second half of the 1960s, the company was run in an enlightened way by its imaginative president, Goddard Lieberson. Himself a composer and a friend to many writers, artists, and musicians, Lieberson believed that a major record company should devote some of its resources to projects that had cultural value even if they didn’t bring in big profits from the marketplace. During those years American society was in crisis and the Vietnam War was raging; musical tastes were changing fast. It was clear to executives who ran record companies that new “hits” appealing to young people were liable to break out from unknown sources—but no one knew in advance what they would be or where they would come from. Columbia, successful and prosperous, was making plenty of money thanks to its Broadway musical and popular music albums. Classical music sold pretty well also. The company could afford to take chances. In that environment, thanks to Lieberson and Masterworks chief John McClure, I was allowed to produce a few recordings of new works that were off the beaten track. John McClure and I came up with the phrase, “Music of Our Time.” The budgets had to be kept small, but that was not a great obstacle because the artists whom I knew and whose work I wanted to produce were used to operating with little money. We wanted to produce the best and most strongly innovative new work that we could find out about. Innovation in those days had partly to do with creative uses of electronics, which had recently begun changing music in ways that would have been unimaginable earlier, and partly with a questioning of basic assumptions.
