October 2013 List Blu-Ray New Releases tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 OCTOBER 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer Boxsets feature heavily in our list this month, primarily due to a big promotion that we now have running until Christmas (pp.12-19), but we would also like to point out couple of exciting new boxes that might be of interest. The Decca Sound is a brilliant 50 album overview of analogue recordings that Decca produced in the pre-digital era. The beginnings of high fidelity, their ‘Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound’ became a worldwide hallmark of sonic excellence, bringing in a golden age of classical recorded music. Included in the box are celebrated recordings from the likes of Solti, Haitink, Kertesz and Dorati - recordings and performances that certainly still stand the test of time today. See p.2 for details. The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage is a series that has been closely followed by many collectors over the past few years, especially since the Monteverdi Choir’s move from DG to the wonderful presentation of the SDG label. For those who have eagerly picked up every volume, the complete collection in a single box may be superfluous, but for anyone who has simply dabbled, or maybe not even tried, it is a real treat. Coming in at £149.95, it is also a great saving on the c.£500 value of the individual items (especially bearing in mind that several volumes have now been deleted). See p.3 for details. As we are rapidly running out of space, we will just mention a few other items quickly. New release highlights this month include Chailly’s new Brahms cycle (Decca), a fabulous new St Matthew Passion from Rene Jacobs (Harmonia Mundi), Dvorak Cello Concertos from Steven Isserlis (Hyperion), Shostakovich’s Symphony no.4 from Petrenko (Naxos) and much much more - priorities are all featured on pp.2-4. New special offers include the afore-mentioned boxsets, plus complete catalogues from Naxos, Signum, Supraphon, Alto and Channel Classics. Plenty to take advantage of! The Europadisc Team DON’T FORGET - UK Carriage is FREE over £35! The RECORDING Navigating, Coping & Cashing In Maze November 2013 Introduction Trying to get a handle on where the recording business is headed is a little like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? As Phil Sommerich points out in his excellent overview of “The 8 The Distribution Maze: Distribution Maze,” Part I and Part II, yes, there is a way, or rather, ways. But which Bring a Compass: Part II one is the right one? Sommerich lets us in on a few of the major players, explains 11 Five Minutes, Five Questions how they each work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. with Three Top Label Execs In “The Musical America Recording Surveys,” we confirmed that our readers are both consumers and makers of recordings.

  • Recensione Del CD the Book of Bilbo and Gandalf – Marco Lo Muscio Ho

  • Czech Music Culture in London and Post-1989 Developments in Czechoslovakia at the Time
International Journal of Arts and Commerce ISSN 1929-7106 www.ijac.org.uk CZECH MUSIC CULTURE IN LONDON AND POST-1989 DEVELOPMENTS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA AT THE TIME Markéta Koutná Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci, Filozofická Fakulta, Katedra muzikologie Czech Republic E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The study deals with Czech-London musical relations, particularly Czech music culture in London within the context of cultural, social and political change in 1989. An analysis of the opera, chamber music, and symphonic production of Czech music in London between 1984 and 1994 identifies how and whether the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution affected the firm position that Czech music culture had held in the capital of the United Kingdom. Key words: Czech musical culture, London, emigration, composers, the Velvet Revolution, 1989 The musical relations between the Czechs and London represent an important current issue. As the capital of the United Kingdom, London naturally takes the lead within the British cultural scene. With its population, budget, and institutional capacities, it is one of the world’s major social and cultural centres, and thanks to the high interest of London-based institutions in Czech music, it is also one of the world's top producers of Czech music.
