She has been involved in MUN since freshman year of high school and loved her experiences there so much she has continued being a part of MUN throughout all of her college years. Throughout her time at MUN at UCI, she has been Assistant Director and Director for General Assembly, Under Secretary-General of Mains, and now has been Secretary General for the past 2 years. When not busy with her school, research, MUN and work, she likes drawing and playing video games. Mary is a third year Criminology, Law and Society major. She has been involved in UCIMUN since freshman year of college and loved her experiences here by far.     DOI: 10.24384/000499 Japan's attitude towards the reconstruction of the past: A study of the historical accuracy of the ‘2016 Sekigahara Battle Festival’ Reenactment Vitas Serafinas, Oxford Brookes University Abstract This paper discusses the 2016 Sekigahara Festival Reenactment battle and analyses its historical accuracy. The annual reenactment sees dozens of people dress up in samurai armour and perform a choreographed performance following the events of the historical battle of Sekigahara, a decisive event in Japan's history that ended the Warring States period and unified the country for over 200 years. Before the analysis of the reenactment, there is some discussion regarding the Japanese government's policy of protecting cultural properties, the concept of Soft Power, the value of a country's cultural exports as a form of influence and Sekigahara's sister city relationship with Gettysburg as these various factors may have influenced the design of the reenactment. The paper analyses the reenactment battle in comparison to historical accounts, both modern and contemporary. The measurements of accuracy are the location, the deployment of troops, the course of events, the apparel, the weaponry and various forms of identification, such as banners and famous samurai accessories, with photographs of the reenactment being compared to a historical account from a first-hand witness and various modern academic studies of the battle by historians and epistemologists. The paper then compares the reenactment battle's historical accuracy with a number of examples from Japanese period films as they share similarities regarding thematic design and production and can provide insight into the decision of whether or not to embrace historical accuracy.

    Feature Exhibition Battles of the Great Warring States Heroes This exhibition illuminates the figures of the warriors who risked their lives on the battlefields of the Warring States period and the circumstances of the battles themselves from two different points of view. The first is the personal letters of the Warring States commanders. Unlike dramatized novels and historical tales, these letters, which were in essence live status reports of the day, clearly convey the actual situation of the warriors and the progress of battles. The second is the various items and implements that were owned by these Warring States generals. These include swords and armor, of course, but will also feature the tea utensils that were so beloved by them. Thus, we will turn a spotlight not only onto the arts of war for which these men were renowned, but will also look at their cultured side to demystify the nature of their character. In addition, we will also introduce aspects of the military conflicts of the day through paintings of battle scenes. They are still with us as a “ready-reference” in a number of contexts: anime samurai from outer space; samurai businessman; “Last Samurai;” the samurai spirit that infuses the martial arts; practitioners of the samurai ethos of bushido (death before defeat, self-sacrifice etc); and exponents of hara-kiri (hari-kari in incorrect English use). The historical samurai class evolved over time. While a warrior class existed for nearly 1000 years (900s to late 1800s), for the vast bulk of this time Japan was at peace, and warriors only rarely died while fighting. The political position of the warrior class was also varied: prominent in rural areas in the 900s, it gradually acquired greater national political power, and after 1600 it monopolized national government.
