F. Wang, X. L. Wei & J. C. Wei is described as a new species from the Yunnan Province of China, and is characterized by having a shiny upper surface, strongly wrinkled lower surface, and marginal pseudocyphellae present on the lower side in the form of a white continuous line or spot. The phylogenetic analysis based on nrDNA ITS sequences suggests that the new species is related to A. sinensis X. Q. Gao. Pardo Forest Service Northern Research Station General Technical Report NRS-165 December 2016 1 Abstract To address a need for air quality and lichen monitoring information for the Northeast, we compared bulk chemistry data from 2011-2013 to baseline surveys from 1988 and 1993 in three Class I Wilderness areas of New Hampshire and Vermont. Plots were within the White Mountain National Forest (Presidential Range—Dry River Wilderness and Great Gulf Wilderness, New Hampshire) and the Green Mountain National Forest (Lye Brook Wilderness, Vermont). We sampled epiphyte communities and found 58 macrolichen species and 55 bryophyte species. We also analyzed bulk samples for total N, total S, and 27 additional elements. We detected a decrease in Pb at the level of the National Forest and in a subset of plots. Low lichen richness and poor thallus condition at Lye Brook corresponded to higher N and S levels at these sites. Lichen thallus condition was best where lichen species richness was also high. Highest Hg content, from a limited subset, was on the east slope of Mt. Washington near the head of Great Gulf. Most dominant lichens in good condition were associated with conifer boles or acidic substrates. The status regarding N and S tolerance for many lichens in the northeastern United States is not clear, so the influence of N pollution on community data cannot be fully assessed. -

We studied a lichen community from 300 ha of native Espinal forest under different types of management, classified into the following sectors: temporary grazing, adjacent crops, landscaped, and conserved. We observed 20 trees in each sector, identified lichen species and measured coverage in grids of 0.2 x 0.2 m. We compared alpha and beta diversity plus coverage by sector using the kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. We also applied a Multiple Response Permutation Procedure, a Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling multivariate analysis and the Indicator Species Analysis to test asso - ciations. We found 34 species of lichens. Physciaceae was the dominant family in the community. Total lichen coverage was highest in the temporary grazing sector and lowest in the conserved sector. No significant differences were found in alpha diversity among sectors; however, beta diversity was higher in the conserved sector. Multivariate analysis also showed that different management practices determine changes in community composition. Keywords: grazing, native forest, Physciaceae , Espinal, composition. Bot. Fennici 51: 345–371. Ninety-seven ingroup specimens of Bryoria section Implexae (Parmeliaceae, Leca- noromycetes) were studied using molecular, chemical, morphological and geographic characters. The molecular data included nuclear ribosomal markers (ITS, IGS) and the partial glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene. In addition to par- simony analyses, a haplotype network was constructed. Phylogenetic analyses strongly supported the monophyly of the section Implexae. The specimens were grouped into two monophyletic clades. Clade 1 encompassed all esorediate material from North America, whereas Clade 2 included both sorediate North American material and all European material. -

ABSTRACT. Hypogymnia imshaugii is one of the most common, conspicuous and morphologically variable epiphytic lichens of the Pacific coastal states and provinces. The species varies greatly in morphology and chemistry, suggesting multiple closely related species or one or more phenotypically plastic species. We sought to determine whether additional ecologically meaningful species might be present within the H. imshaugii complex. Improving our species concepts could potentially improve ecological inferences based on community sampling. Three relatively well- defined genetic groups and one residual group in the H. imshaugii complex were detected with haplotype networks based on the ITS locus; however, phylogenetic reconstructions on combined ITS, mtSSU, GPD1 and TEF1 loci did not reflect this pattern. At present, we have insufficient evidence to support defining any of these groups as new taxa. The four major chemotypes in H. imshaugii differed in frequency among the genetic groups. None of the genetic groups was, however, qualitatively uniform in chemotype. Only one chemotype occurred in a single genetic group, but several chemotypes occurred in that group. -

The name Parmelia mutata is removed from synonymy with Parmelinella versiformis and proposed as a new combination, and Parmelia nimandairana is removed from Parmelinella wallichiana and proposed as another new combina- tion. Parmelinella salacinifera is proposed as a new combination. A lectotype is designated for Parmelinella versiformis. A key to all currently accepted species of the genus is presented. Key words – Canoparmelia – Parmelina – Parmotremopsis – cilia – salazinic acid Introduction Elix & Hale (1987) installed the genus Parmelinella for three species previously included in Parmelina (P. wallichiana, P. manipurensis and P. simplicior) with broad, rotund lobes, an emaculate thallus, sparse, simple cilia more or less restricted to the axils, simple black rhizines, ellipsoid ascospores, short cylindrical conidia, and salazinic and consalazinic acids in the medulla. A key for the differentiation of this and some further newly proposed genera, all segregates of Parmelina, and a table containing many characteristics for them was included with the descriptions of the genera. -

HAWKSWORTH Abstract: The phylogenetic relationships of 16 species of Parmelia s. str. are presented based on sequences of nuITS rDNA from 56 specimens, and -tubulin gene sequences from 29 collections. Parmelia serrana sp. nov. a Mediterranean species morphologically very close to P. saxatilis is described. Parmelia ernstiae is the sister-group to P. saxatilis s. str., and a further undescribed North American species of the P. saxatilis complex may require recognition. The isidiate P. squarrosa is closely allied to the sorediate P. sulcata, which is paraphyletic. Japanese samples of P. cochleata form a monophyletic group but too few collections of these were studied to reach firm conclusions regarding their relationships. An epitype is selected for the lectotype of Lichen saxatilis to unequivocally fix the application of that epithet. As the function of endophytic fungi on the plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, ELF may have an influence on the lichen diversity and the ecosystem, functioning similarly to the influence of endophytic fungi on plant ecology and ecosystem sustainability, which suggests the importance of understanding the diversity and community pattern of ELF. In this study, we investigated the diversity and the factors influencing the community structure of ELF in Jeju Island, South Korea by analyzing 619 fungal isolates from 79 lichen samples in Jeju Island. A total of 112 ELF species was identified and the most common species belonged to Xylariales in Sordariomycetes. -

Fungi, Bryophytes Before I Worked on This Project, I Had No Idea How to Apply GIS to Basic Ecological Concepts
Galbreath Wildlands Preserve Galbreath Special Status Species Assessment - Fungi, Bryophytes Before I worked on this project, I had no idea how to apply GIS to basic ecological concepts. – Christoph Schopfer, Geography Major Project Summary A team of students and Center staff mapped potential habitat for 110 special status plants and animals on the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve. We identified special status species with potential to occur in the Galbreath Preserve using existing agency databases and publications. These included fungi, bryophytes, plants, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. For each species, we collected biological information, undertook GIS-based habitat suitability analysis, and assessed the likelihood of occurrence within preserve boundaries. The project created professional experience for Biology and Geography undergraduates and graduate students who worked on an interdisciplinary team to develop assessment techniques and methods.
