K. cDepartment of Biology, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina 27708 dAuthor for Correspondence ( [email protected]) Abstract The haplolepideous mosses (Dicranidae) constitute a large group of ecologically and morphologically diverse species recognised primarily by having peristome teeth with a single row of cells on the dorsal surface. The reduction of sporophytes in numerous moss lineages renders circumscription of the Dicranidae problematic. Delimitation of genera and higher taxa within it has also been difficult. We analyse chloroplast-encoded rps4 gene sequences for 129 mosses, including representatives of nearly all the haplolepideous families and subfamilies, using parsimony, likelihood and Bayesian criteria. The data set includes 59 new sequences generated for this study. With the exception of Bryobartramia, which falls within the Encalyptaceae, the Dicranidae are resolved in all analyses as a monophyletic group including the extremely reduced Archidiales and Ephemeraceae. The monotypic Catoscopium, usually assigned to the Bryidae is consistently resolved as sister to Dicranidae, and this lineage has a high posterior probability under the Bayesian criterion. Within the Dicranidae, a core clade is resolved that comprises most of the species sampled, and all analyses identify a proto-haplolepideous grade of taxa previously placed in various haplolepideous families. -

The second version of the checklist and Red List of bryophytes of the Czech Republic is provided. Generally accepted infraspecific taxa have been incorporated into the checklist for the first time. With respect to the Red List, IUCN criteria version 3.1 has been adopted for evaluation of taxa, and the criteria used for listing in the respective categories are listed under each red-listed taxon. Taxa without recent localities and those where extinction has not been proven are listed as a subset of DD taxa. Little known and rare non-threatened taxa with incomplete knowledge of distribution which are worthy of further investigation are listed on the so-called attention list. In total, 849 species plus 5 subspecies and 19 varieties have been accepted. 23 other historically reported species and one va- riety were evaluated as doubtful with respect to unproven but possible occurrence in the territory, and 6 other species with proven occurrence require taxonomic clarification. -

In order to avoid any future taxonomic confusion especially presence or absence of “isidiate soredia”, a single specimen with numerous isidiofibrils developing on the soralia was cho- sen as lectotype. The lectotype of U. confusa contains usnic, salazinic, constictic acids and trace amount of protocetraric acid as the secondary substances. ITS rDNA sequences of Japanese and Taiwanese specimens that have the same morphology and chemistry with the lectotype form two distinct clades nested within the strongly supported clade representing the core group of Usnea cornuta (containing U. cornuta Körber s.str.). Our molecular phylogenetic result based only on ITS rDNA sequences doesn’t allow to confirm or contradict the conspecificity of U. confusa with U. cornuta. Wei is described as a new species from the Yunnan Province of China, and is characterized by having a shiny upper surface, strongly wrinkled lower surface, and marginal pseudocyphellae present on the lower side in the form of a white continuous line or spot. A total of 63 taxa belonging to Bryophyta (22 families 37 genera 44 species), Marchantiophyta (7 families 11 genera 18 species), and Antho- cerotophyta (1 family 1 genus 1 species) were determined, and the liverwort index was 30.2%. The predominant life form was the mat form. The rates of bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. These values indicate that such forests are widespread in this study area. Moreover, the rock was the substrate type, which plays a major role in providing micro-habitats for bryophytes. We suggest that more detailed studies of the bryophyte flora should be conducted on a regional scale to provide basic data for selecting indicator species of Gotjawal and evergreen broad-leaved forests on Jejudo Island. The incomplete preservation and lack of key characters that could define the position of an ancient moss in modern classification remain the problem. Carboniferous records are still impossible to refer to any of the modern moss taxa. Numerous Permian protosphagnalean mosses possess traits that are absent in any extant group and they are therefore treated here as an extinct lineage, whose descendants, if any remain, cannot be recognized among contemporary taxa. Non-protosphagnalean Permian mosses were also fairly diverse, representing morphotypes comparable with Dicranidae and acrocarpous Bryidae, although unequivocal representatives of these subclasses are known only since Cretaceous and Jurassic. Among these, F. asperisetus var. andamanensis Gangulee is new to central Indian bryogeographical region while F. ceylonensis and F. involutus are new to PBR. The species scatter at various localities of the PBR, mostly terrestrial, but with a single epiphytic species of F. taxifolius. The moss genus Tortella (Pottiaceae) is re-examined for continental North America north of Mexico. Tortella alpicola is distinguished from T. fragilis as an uncommon but widespread taxon. Tortella japonica is considered to be a minor variant of T. humilis. Tortella rigens is new to the United States on the basis of comparison of American material with that of Europe, previous reports being erroneous. Tortella nitida is redescribed from authentic material and is excluded from the North American flora. The hitherto European Tortella tortuosa var. fragilifolia is reported from American plant populations. Tortella inclinata var. densa is reported as new to North America as a comb. nov. The bipolar distribution of Tortella fragilis is confirmed. Tortella inclinata var. inclinata is excluded from the flora of Arctic North America—specimens on which the species were cited were found to be T. inclinata var. densa instead. This study of the genus Tortella in continental North Tortella alpicola, as T. fragilis var. tortelloides American north of Mexico was especially undertaken to S. W. Antibacterial Activity of Bryophyte (Funaria Hygrometrica) on Some Throat Isolates

Amakoromo Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt Choba P.M.B 5323 Abstract An investigation was carried out to check the antibacterial activity of the extract of a Bryophyte, Funaria hygrometrica on some throat isolates and compared with the standard antibiotics using standard methods. The genera isolated were Corynebacterium sp., Lactobacillus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. Result showed a significant difference (p≤0.05) in the efficacy of F. hygrometrica extract and the antibiotics on the test organisms. The zones of inhibition in diameter of the test organisms ranged between 12.50±2.08mm (F. hygrometrica extract) and 33.50±0.71mm (Cefotaxamine); 11.75±2.3608mm (F. hygrometrica extract) and 25.50±0.71mm (Cefotaxamine) and 0.00±0.00mm (Tetracycline) and 29.50±0.71mm (Cefotaxamine) for Lactobacillus sp, Staphylococcus sp. and Corynebacterium sp. respectively while the control showed no zone of inhibition (0.00±0.00mm). The test organisms were sensitive to the antibiotics except Corynebacterium being resistant to Tetracycline. The minimal inhibitory concentration of plant extract and antibiotics showed a significant difference (p≤0.05) on the test organisms and ranged between 0.65±0.21 mg/ml (Cefotaxamine) and 4.25±0.35 mg/ml (Penicillin G); 0.04±0.01 mg/ml (Penicillin G) and 2.50±0.00 mg/ml ((F. -
