In a sense, it is to sketch out a singular narrative but of many personal “conversions.” So now, being here, I am looking back, and it all seems so clear and obvious. But, it is the historian in me that realizes best the numerous situations, emotions, and dilemmas that brought me where I am. I feel so profoundly thankful for a journey that even I, obsessed with planning, could not have fully anticipated. In a final analysis, as my dissertation grew so did I, but neither could have become better without the presence of the people or the institutions that I feel so fortunate to be able to acknowledge here. At the University of Michigan, I first thank my mentor John Fine for his tremendous academic support over the years, for his friendship always present when most needed, and for best illustrating to me how true knowledge does in fact produce better humanity.

Father Muron Aznikian THIS PUBLICATION WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE GENEROUS DONATION OF Mr. & Mrs. JIRAYR & AURA KILADJIAN IN MEMORY OF THEIR PARENTS Mr. & Mrs. KRIKOR & NEVART KILADJIAN MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN ETERNAL PEACE 3 4 ESSAYS ON BIBLICAL CONCEPTS AND SOCIAL ISSUES Authored by Most Rev. Father Muron Aznikian 5 6 INTRODUCTION Have we ever compared the Bible to the US Constitution? We revere each of them, but there is more to it. For the Bible, we have a priest- hood which studies and interprets stories and commandments, giving us a set of values. For the US Constitution, we have a Supreme Court which studies and interprets the words of the American Founders, giv- ing us a body of laws. With that in mind, we look to Very Reverend Father Muron Aznikian as our interpreter in this book. Having studied the Bible in his theologi- cal training, Father Aznikian expounds on Biblical history and teach- ings in the many essays which he has written, in order to give us a set of Christian values and an understanding in our confusing times. We live in a fast-changing world, and the change seems to have accel- erated in recent years. Our culture and values are changing, brought about in part by radical advances in technology, in part because of pro- gress in the health sciences, and in part by the loss or gain in personal wealth. Father Aznikian provides Biblically-based answers in his essays to a number of timely topics, one or more of which touch upon the lives of all Armenians families throughout California and the world.

THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY 56 PATERNOSTER ROW AND 65 ST. PAUL'S CHURCHYARD [A /l n'ghts reserved J PREFACE DURING the last few years the world ha~ witnessed a terribl.e spectacle. We nave seen a Christian nation in Asia, of the same Aryan blood as ourselves, suffering the most cruel wrongs at the hands of the Turks and their confederates, the Kurds. We have seen members of this Christian nation, men and women and little children, massacred in tens qf thousands, and our illustrated papers have presented us with photographic views of some of these terrible scenes. We have read of large numbers dying a martyr's death rather than embrace Islam, and have heard of those who had less courage and faith being driven at the point of the sword to repeat the ,creed of the. Arabian Antichrist. We have beheld some thing more strange still - the Christian nations of Europe hampered in their endeavours to put a stop to this state of things by their mutual ·distrust and jealousy of one another. And thus, as we draw near the end of the nineteenth century, our news papers are quietly discussing the question whether or not Turkey will succeed in exterminating the 6 PREFACE whole Christian population of her Armenian provinces, or in forcing upon them, at the sword's point, an apostasy worse than death.

  • Who Is David the Invincible Philosopher?
Who is David the Invincible Philosopher? To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding Proverbs 1:2 Famously, this verse from the beginning of the Book of Proverbs was the first thing written down in the newly invented Armenian alphabet. Wisdom, imasdutyun, is the root of the word for philosophy in Armenian, imasdasirutyun, which directly reflects the Greek, meaning “love of wisdom.” After the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrob Masdotz in 405 AD, his students produced a flurry of translation into Armenian. It is this activity of learned translation of edifying works into Armenian that the Armenian Church celebrates this Saturday. We recall the “Holy Translators,” a list that includes Mesrob himself, early writers and translators such as Yeghishe (who wrote the history of St. Vartan), as well as later translators such as Nersess Shnorhali. Among the list of Holy Translators we commemorate this Saturday is one “David the Philosopher.” While his title of philosopher, a lover of wisdom, points to that first moment of translation into Armenian and provides us with a glimpse of the goals and objectives of those translators, he is not as well known a figure as Masdotz, Yeghishe, or Shnorhali. Who is “David the Philosopher,” and why is a philosopher recognized as a holy translator? Often called “David the Invincible Philosopher,” the figure of David is best known through his texts, which became absolutely central to Armenian literary and philosophical history. He has left us four major texts: two translations and commentaries on works of Aristotle (Categories and Analytics), a commentary on the neo-Platonist philosopher Porphyry’s Isagoge, and perhaps his most well-known work, Definitions and Divisions of Philosophy.

Translations from Armenian into Italian, 1991 to date a study by the Next Page Foundation in the framework of the Book Platform project conducted by Sona Haroutyunian1 2012 1 Sona Haroutyunian is literary translator, Professor of Armenian Language and Literature at the University of Venice, Italy. This text is licensed under Creative Commons Translations from Armenian into Italian, 1991 to date Sona Haroutyunian, PhD University of Venice Ca’ Foscari [email protected] PART I Historical Overview The first reliable vestiges of an Armenian presence in medieval Italy are found in the Byzantine Exarchate of Ravenna. Some of these exarchs, like the famous Narsetes (Nerses) the Eunuch (541-568) and Isaac (Sahak) (625-644) were of Armenian origin. In this same period, the names of other Armenian leaders in Italy, under whose command fought numerous Armenian soldiers, are also remembered. In addition to these officers and soldiers were many Armenian traders and monastics in various Italian cities like Ravenna, Venice, Florence, Naples, Ancona, Rome and others. A new chapter in Armenian-Italian relations began in the 12th Century with the concurrence of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia and the Crusades. According to the dates provided by Father Alishan, between 1240 and 1350, there were twenty-two Italian cities that had an Armenian church, and in some cities like Rome, Bologna and Venice, there was more than one church (Alishan 1893). However, the dispersion of Armenians in Italy reached its peak in the mid-14th Century. The existence of numerous guesthouses, signs of an animated traffic of travelers and merchants, and the many convents with their notable cultural and literary activities, attest to an evolved and active community.
