The Tombs of Artists: A Last Statement From the Grave by Allison Meier on August 1, 2013 Sculpture by Patricia Cronin for the future grave of she and her wife Deborah Kass (all photographs by the author for Hyperallergic) As a last final statement, artists’ tombstones don’t disappoint. From the wildly eccentric to those that incorporate their own creations, the graves of artists are a fascinating reflection of their work. Even those tombstones that are simple, or sometimes even unmarked, often find a tribute from visitors who leave mementoes to these artists. I’ve spent much time visiting cemeteries during my travels, and spotted these artist memorials among the tombs. Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York Grave of Jean-Michel Basquiat Notes on Basquiat’s grave Visitors regularly leave art materials, museum stickers and buttons, and notes at Jean-Michel Bas- quiat’s simple tombstone in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. The first monumental cemeteries of western Europe : October 19th, 2010 the „Passy type“ necropolis in the Paris basin around 4500 BC Philippe Chambon and Aline Thomas Zusammenfassung Im Seine-Yonne-Gebiet erscheinen um 4500 BC zahlreiche Grä- berfelder, zusammen mit gigantischen „Einhegungen“, die als Aus- druck der Bestattungssitte kein späteres Äquivalent in Europa haben würden. Diese Konstruktionen, seien es Hügel, Palisadeneinhegun- gen oder gemischte Anlagen überschreiten durchaus eine Länge von 300 m, enthalten aber wenige Bestattungen. Über die klassische Interpretation hinausgehend, die einen solch hohen Aufwand für wenige Individuen als Ausdruck einer hierarchischen Gesellschafts- ordnung sieht, zeigt eine strukturelle Analyse dieser Gräberfelder die Repetition eines elementaren Moduls, welches mit konsistenten Attributen assoziiert ist, die die Jagd, oder genereller gesprochen, das Wilde, evoziert. Eine Untersuchung von Assoziationen und Ex- klusionen bringt die Morphologie und Anordnung der Monumente, das Gender der bestatteten Individuen und ihre Attribute ins Spiel. In den als männlich anzusprechenden Monumenten kann ein zent- rales Element herausgestellt werden, oftmals mit originären physi- schen Charakteristika ausgestattet und durch ein enigmatisches In- signium: ein angespitztes Knochengerät mit breiter Basis, ad hoc als „Eiffelturm“ bezeichnet. Dieses Element ist von anderen Individuen umgeben, die aufgrund der beigegebenen Objekte als Jäger inter- pretiert werden. Andere Individuen dienten wohl nicht mehr denn als passive Figurationen, als Folien. Auf jeden Fall korrespondieren die frühesten Gräberfelder des 5. Jahrtausend BC mit den frühesten menschlichen Gruppen für die wir diverse und repetitive Statusbe- ziehungen identifizieren können.
