The article is based on an analysis of unique data gathered in a questionnaire survey con- ducted among 409 Moldovan migrants living in Italy and Czechia and resi- dent there for more than one year.     Abstract This dissertation explores the prisoner society in Terezín (Theresienstadt) ghetto, a transit ghetto in the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia. Nazis deported here over 140, 000 Czech, German, Austrian, Dutch, Danish, Slovak, and Hungarian Jews. It was the only ghetto to last until the end of Second World War. A microhistorical approach reveals the dynamics of the inmate community, shedding light on broader issues of ethnicity, stratification, gender, and the political dimension of the “little people” shortly before they were killed. Rather than relegating Terezín to a footnote in narratives of the Holocaust or the Second World War, my work connects it to Central European, gender, and modern Jewish histories. A history of victims but also a study of an enforced Central European society in extremis, instead of defining them by the view of the perpetrators, this dissertation studies Terezín as an autarkic society. This approach is possible because the SS largely kept out of the ghetto. Terezín represents the largest sustained transnational encounter in the history of Central Europe, albeit an enforced one. Although the Nazis deported all the inmates on the basis of their alleged Jewishness, Terezín did not produce a common sense of Jewishness: the inmates were shaped by the countries they had considered home. Ethnicity defined culturally was a particularly salient means of differentiation. The dynamics connected to ethnic categorization and class formation allow a deeper understanding of cultural and national processes in Central and Western Europe in the twentieth century. The society in Terezín was simultaneously interconnected and stratified. There were no stark contradictions between the wealthy and majority of extremely poor prisoners.

Roselaar Introduction During a Round Table Discussion convened by Dr Walter Bock and Dr Henri Ouellet at the XXI International Ornithological Congress in Vienna, 20–25 August 1994, a number of staff members of European ornithological collections expressed the opinion that more cooperation among them was desirable. Many museums suffer from shrinking budgets, making improvement, maintenance, or even access to the collections difficult. Maintaining the world’s biodiversity is of major concern among biologists at the moment, and although this concern is also acknowledged by various governments it has not resulted in any additional support for museum ornithology. Bird collections form a rich source of biodiversity data. Taxonomic information in regional and global handbooks can only be extracted from museum collections. Morphometric data taken from skins of various populations are of importance for unravelling migration patterns for instance. Population studies profit from collections of specimens of known age and sex. Reference collections for identification and training will always be needed, both for laymen (e.g. rarity committees) and scientists (e.g. as help in enforcement of CITES and other national and international nature conservation legislation, for the statistics of bird/aircraft collisions, archaeology, and in ecological studies). Recently, bird skins or feathers have acquired additional relevance as a source of DNA for phylogenetic and population studies. Biochemical data have become a major source of phylogenetic information, from the level of populations up to the level of phyla, but can only be interpreted with reference to collections of entire organisms.

Na mysli mi naráz vytanuly okamžiky staré téměř půl století, neboť ani tak dlouhý časový odstupje nedokázal vymazat z mého vědomí. Byly to doby, kdyjsem wing neohrožených chlapců s nášivkami CZECHOSLOVAKIA na uniformách vodil na sweepy nad obsazenou Evropu. Znovujsem prožíval chn7e vítězství, ale také chvi7e tragické, kdyžjsme ztratili kamaráda. Opětjsem si vybavil onen nezapomenutelný dojem, kdyžjsem v srpnu 1945 přivedl československý stíhací wing až do svobodné Prahy. Jsem osobně poctěn, že mohu napsat předmluvu k tak úplné a vyčerpávající knize o čs. shhačích v Anglii. Moji mladí přátelé, autoři této knihy se svého úkolu zhostili způsobem, který nemá v naší historické literatuře obdoby. Jménem svým ijménem všech bývalých příslušníků našeho stíhacího wingujim za to vzdávám upřímný dík.     Československé perutě v RAF Vlajka RAF Činnost příslušníků československého letectva v jednotkách britské Royal Air Force během druhé světové války hrála důležitou roli v boji proti německémunacismu; o to smutnější je osud a pronásledování těchto vojáků v komunistickém Československu, kterým se až po roce 1989 dostalo uznání. Odchod do odboje Odchod do zahraničního odboje nebyl jednoduchý. Mnozí letci byli iritováni počátečním sklonem části velení, pozitivně reagovat na nabídku maršálaHermanna Göringa k převzetí asi 1 500 pilotů a jiných specialistů do německého letectva po zřízení protektorátu (podle některých pramenů mělo dokonce dojít k prvním převodům strojů a posádek do Německa[1]). Druhým důvodem bylo provedení út ěku. Mnoho letců odešlo nejprve do Polska, ovšem polské úřady nejevily ochotu případ řešit (většina vojáků byla pak převedena do Francie, kde vstoupili do cizinecké legie, aby mohli být přijati do francouzské armády[2]). Počátkem srpna 1939 si i polská vláda uvědomovala nebezpečí, které jí hrozilo od nacistického Německa, proto byla část pilotů, která dosud neodešla do Francie, přijata do polského letectva. Avšak jejich bojové vystoupení bylo velmi krátké, rychl&aa cute; porážka Polska znamenala brzké ukončení jejich činnosti. Někteří piloti ustoupili se svými polskými kolegy do Rumunska, odtud se dostali na Střední východ a dále do Francie, jiní se dostali do Sovětského svazu, kde byli nejdříve internováni, ovšem po intervenci československých orgánů v zahraničí byli přesunováni k jednotkám ve Francii, později ve Velké Británii. Po obsazení Polska zůstala jedinou cestou pro české emigranty na západ trasa z Protektor& aacute;tu přes Slovensko a Maďarsko, kde však při jejich dopadení hrozilo vydání Němcům. Do bezpečí se čeští letci i vojáci dostali až při překročení hranic tehdejší Jugoslávie, kde působil československý konzul, který zajišťoval jejich převoz do Bejrútu a Libanonu, odkud pokračovali směrem do Francie a posléze do Velké Británie.

INTRODUCTION Despite the great emphasis which has been placed on Slavic studies in the United States during the last few years, very little attention has been devoted, so far, to Slavic and East European bibliography as a whole. The first monograph devoted to Slavic bibliography was written by Robert J. Kerner1 in 1916, at a time when bibliographical services in most of Slavic Europe had not yet been fully established. The second publication in English,2 an offprint from the Bulletin of the N. Y. Public Library, which appeared thirty-one years later, is merely a list of about 100 English-language bibliographies in the collection of the New York Public Library. More recent bibliographical monographs in English, such as those by John T. Dorosh,3 Karol Maichel,4 or Paul L. Horecky5 have been restricted to Russia and the Soviet Union. There is one German publication on East European bibliography, Die Bibliographie in den europäischen Ländern der Volksdemokratien. Entwicklung und gegenwärtiger Stand,6 written by East European scholars. PhDr. Jan Županič, Ph.D. 2018 2 Dizertační práce si klade několik hlavních cílů. V první řadě jde o nástin podílu letců z českých zemí na formování, organizační a personální výstavbě, technickém rozvoji a na operačním nasazení rakousko-uherského letectva v období předcházejícímu vzniku 1. světové války a zejména v jejím průběhu. V neposlední řadě se pokusí o stanovení jejich percentuálního podílu v celém rakousko-uherském armádním i námořním letectvu. Zde je třeba připomenout, že národnostní (či zemská) problematika u rakousko-uherského letectva dosud nebyla předmětem seriózního historického výzkumu v žádném z nástupnických států. Důvodem byl především fakt, že u této mladé zbraně nebyla – na rozdíl od jiných zbraní - statisticky sledována. Pro rakouskou historiografii nepředstavovalo národnostní složení c. a k. letectva téma hodné přiměřené pozornosti. V české, respektive československé se na dlouhou dobu prosadila dobově podmíněná teze o tom, že čeští letci byli v rakousko-uherských leteckých silách zastoupeni „v nepatrném počtu“. Práce je rozdělena na několik částí. V první je nastíněna geneze a předválečné počátky rakousko-uherského vojenského letectví včetně jeho nezanedbatelných, mnohdy i rozhodujících „českých“ souvislostí – v etnickém i zemském smyslu. Podobně jako tomu bylo i u jiných států, tak i zde byla aviatika zpočátku doménou civilní sféry. Do té vojenské pronikala jen s obtížemi, danými celkovou průmyslovou zaostalostí monarchie, fiskální politikou státu i konzervativními postoji armádních špiček. Následuje nástin problematiky jeho organizační a personální výstavby, technického rozvoje a operačního nasazení na frontách 1.
