SINNINGTON NEWSLETTER May 2020 Photo courtesy of Stuart Frank JIM McTAVISH Photo courtesy of Stuart Frank Photo courtesy of Stuart Frank AND THE VILLAGE NOTICE BOARD Former village resident Jim McTavish died in Santa Barbara on the 27th March 2020 aged 91 years. Jim and his wife Joan had earlier returned to England, before coming to Sinnington in 2004 to live in Barnyard Cottage on Riverside West. In January 2016 they moved back to America. Both had a strong affection for the village and the lifestyle here. Jim was a very talented craftsman and had a wide range of woodworking tools. At the time of the 2012 Sinnington Parish Plan, residents commented that the village notice board was showing its age and in need of attention. Jim saw this as an opportunity to show his appreciation of the village, by designing a new oak framed replacement which over many weeks he constructed in his garage, with help from Les Scaling. On completion, it was transported to the current location at the corner of The Garth and erected with help from Brian Mitchell. Jim would accept no payment for the new notice board and very reluctantly allowed himself to be photographed next to this invaluable asset to the community. This will be remembered as Jim’s legacy to the village. – Roger Hudson ADVICE FOR VISITORS You will be aware that there are some visitors coming to our village to use it as a starting point for their walks. Given the amendment to Government advice, you are now allowed to drive somewhere to go on your daily exercise. The Parish Council has decided it is important to remind visitors to maintain appropriate social distancing, so we have put up several signs around the village politely asking them to respect our residents' needs to stay safe. This action has been approved by the North Yorkshire Police. Geoffrey Richardson, Parish Council Chairman VE DAY REMEMBERED Whilst official commemoration of VE day has been postponed from the 8th May, it is too important an occasion to let it pass without recognising people from Sinnington who served in the armed forces during World War II. These were: Bob Smith Reg Sleightholme Ron Hunter Geoff Pearson John Simpson Stan Howe Gilbert Dale Tom Marton Stan Simpson Winnie Fox Dick Hornby Oswald Simpson Eva Hunter Gerald Grayson There were no fatalities. These names have not been verified from official sources. They are recollections from people who lived in the village at that time, so may be incomplete. If you are aware of someone whose name should be included we would love to hear from you, please let us know at [email protected] . Any omissions are entirely unintended. SINNINGTON WI – WAR YEARS Whilst the WI in general had a strong “anti-war” stance it was recognised that members would want to do their bit so they were encouraged to help with evacuees and local food production. Sinnington WI organised fund raising events in order to support the men and women of the village who were serving in the forces. Gifts were usually in the form of postal orders to the value of five shillings (25p). Locally their “comfort fund” supplied the Home Guard with cigarettes in recognition of their services to the village. Other causes which benefitted from their generosity were the Red Cross, Prisoners of War and Mrs. Churchill’s Aid to Russia Fund. Displaced persons (thought to be Eastern Europeans) were housed in a hostel built on the grounds of the present “Garth”. In January 1948 “boxes of eatables” and cigarettes were given to this community to help celebrate their Orthodox Christmas festivities. At the WI’s regular monthly meetings topics relevant to the times included “make do and mend” “Wartime cookery” and dress renovations. - Courtesy of Janet Ambler.
