Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education Minutes of Meeting – 18th September 2017 18:00 - 18:30 The Signing Tree Conference Centre, Ladywood Road, Birmingham, B16 8SZ 1 Welcome and Chair’s Business – Cllr Barry Henley (BH) ACTION Cllr Barry Henley (Chair) welcomed everyone to the meeting and outlined the topics of the meeting as per the meeting’s agenda. 2 Apologies Apologies were received and accepted from: Committee A: Peter Conley, Keith Dennis, Gulamraza Datoo, Janet Hopton Committee B: Rachel Jepson, Evelyn Murphy, Jill Appleton. Committee C: Ayisha Ali, Samantha Dawson-Smith, Jane Hetherington, Alan Jones, Jo Weir Committee D: Blair Kesseler 3.1 Minutes of meeting 14.02.17 Minutes from 14th February 2017 were checked for accuracy and any comments from individuals welcomed. Cllr Barry Henley (BH) updated the group with regards to the appointments. He was pleased to announce that all SACRE members had been appointed for this academic year 2017- SW to send letters 2018. Simone Whitehouse (SW) will be sending letters of to SACRE members appointments to all members. Action point on PG 5 (5.0 - 3rd paragraph) Gopinder Kaur GKS to provide Sagoo requested that the paragraph should be removed and alternative she will provided a more suitable sentence. sentence 3.2 Matters arising from meeting 14.02.17 SW has notified Starbank School regarding the successful reapplication of their determination. Annual Report - waiting for GCSE examination data. GH sent link to SW. SW is still awaiting the link from GH, with regards to APPG Transcripts report, transcript to be shared to SACRE members once shared by received. email 28.2.17 1 RE at the Learning and Assessment Service – Simone 4 Whitehouse (SW) Documents were circulated to SACRE members prior to the meeting, with regards to 'Ofsted Reports' and 'RE Support Reports for Summer Term 2017', which listed schools enquires and the dates when they were received by Simone Whitehouse, Partnership Adviser for Religious Education and Collective Worship. Below are the highlighted comments Simone Whitehouse (SW) shared with SACRE members: Ofsted Reports St Mary & St John - Effective and Promoting of SMSC Al-Furqan – SW had previously supported their primary lead Heartlands Academy – noted for their understanding on their different cultures Aston Manor - SW had worked with their department a couple of year ago. RE Support Reports ‘Renal’ Primary School - should read Rednal Hill School Starbank School - SW held at workshop at the school. Staff had received collective worship a determination for Collective Worship. 5 Determinations SW has followed up and reminded schools whose determinations had expired. MF suggested visiting the schools, whose determinations had lapsed. BH commented that this would not be possible, partly due to funding and SF stated that these may be Academies. R. Darr (Cromwell) has been reminded. 6 Working Party reports - if met Andrew Smith (AS) questioned Marius Felderhof (MF), about the SACRE monitoring report in terms of Secondary schools providing RE in the light of the recently published ‘State of the 6.1 Nation’ report. Sue Fearon (SF) had a copy of the SACRE report and showed this to AH. Radio 4 (Polls & Religion) 6.2 Shmuel Arkush updated the group about a Radio 4 programme SW to send link 2 that he had listened to, which was really interesting. It was requested by the group to send a link of the radio programme to all members. Shmuel Arkush had an extended conversation with Paul Davies, 6.3 with regards to concerns of the uptake on the website.
