You will then be responsible for making your own way from the airport to the accommodation. 3.4. HISTORICAL TIMELINE The following tables contains a chronology of significant events in the history of the site and the subject building as summarised from Sections 3.2 and 3.3 and building/development application information drawn from the City of Sydney Planning Cards. The development of the site can generally be separated into four phases of development, as follows: 1. New Belmore Market 1893 - 1913 2. Wirths Hippodrome 1914 – 1926 3. Capitol Theatre 1927 – 1991 4. Restored Capitol Theatre 1992 – Present Table 4 – Historical Timeline Date Event 1866 Construction of Belmore Markets begins on a site bounded by Castlereagh, Hay, Pitt and Campbell. 1869 Belmore Markets opens on 14 May. Phase 1: New Belmore Markets 1893 Second Belmore Markets (Capitol site) open. Used for theatrical and circus performances on Saturday nights. 1910 Council decides that the Tivoli and Capitol (two theatres) would be erected on the sites of the old and new Belmore Markets. 1912 Wirth Bros takes a 10-week lease on the new Belmore Theatre for a ‘circus and hippodrome’. The council claimed the auditorium could be used as hippodrome, circus, theatre, opera house, concert hall, vaudeville entertainment hall or for photo plays (early silent motion pictures). Phase 2: Wirths Hippodrome 1914-1915 Belmore Markets dismantled and re-erected as the Hippodrome – home of Wirths Circus in Australia. The detail of the market walls was erected 10 metres higher. 1916 On April 3, Wirths Circus and Hippodrome opens – the largest theatre in Australia. The 13-metre ring in front of the proscenium arch had a hydraulically operated floor which dropped to fill with water for aquatic events. -

Issues and gaps (needs summary) This section summarises overall early needs and opportunities for the Pyrmont Peninsula resulting from initial analysis. Early identified Social infrastructure opportunities for the Pyrmont Peninsula (based on initial population benchmarking alone) by 2041 are: 11.1. Issues and gaps community and Libraries cultural facilities • Based on current gap and forecast resident and worker growth across the Pyrmont Peninsula, there is a forecast Below is a summary of the gaps and opportunities relating to gap of more than 3,000m2 of library floor space. Given the all community and cultural facility types audit, benchmarked constrained land area, a new library may not be possible, and assessed in Parts 3 and 4. These gaps and opportunities however, opportunities to address this gap include: inform the Action Plan in Section 11.3. • Realisation of new library floor space of at least 3,500m2 by 2041 dependent on availability of space. The NSW marine estate includes marine waters, estuaries and the coast. It extends seaward out to three nautical miles and from the Queensland border in the north to the Victorian border in the south. Over the course of our journey we visited some 25 sites and surveyed 19, to ascertain the level of rubbish found in our built and natural environments and assess the effectiveness of various strategies to address litter. Its easy to become ‘litter blind’, so used to the bottles, cans, bags and butts swirling around the ground as you walk to work or relax at the beach. Equally, the untrained eye misses the piles of trash caught in garden undergrowth, windswept under piers and jetties or lost down the stormwater drain. Even ‘so called’ detailed studies fail to capture a genuine picture of the problem. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) propose to redevelop Darling Walk at Darling Harbour. The aim of the redevelopment is to deliver a new commercial development, consistent with the Metropolitan Strategy and the planning objectives for Darling Harbour. The proposed redevelopment of Darling Walk will create a mixed use development that promotes activity throughout the week, public holidays and weekends. Lend Lease Development (Millers Point) are the development proponent who will have designed, . developed and delivered the new commercial office and retail development, which is now known as Darling Quarter. To ensure that the Aboriginal cultural heritage significance of the subject Area is was adversely impacted upon by the proposed redevelopment, Casey & Lowe on behalf of SHFA commissioned an archaeological survey and cultural heritage assessment. That assessment was undertaken in August 2008 (Comber 2008). As a result of that assessment it was recommended that sub‐surface archaeological test excavations be undertaken prior to the redevelopment. Lend Lease commissioned that testing and this report details the results of the testing. -
