PERIODICAL POSTAGE PAID AT CHICAGO, IL PRCUA Receives 2010 Best of Chicago Award for 2nd Year

For the second consecutive year, Polish Roman Catholic Union of America has been selected for the 2010 Best of Chicago Award in the Fraternal Life Insurance Organization category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA). The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses and fraternals throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies and fraternals that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers, members and the community. Nationwide, only 1 in 70 (1.4%) of the 2010 sward recipients qualified as two-time Award Winners. Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2010 USCA Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties. Congratulations go to the PRCUA sales agents (deputies) whose hard

May he rest in GORACZKOWSKI, FLORENCE 1598 IL eternal peace! HELMINSKI, CATHERINE 87 MI Submitted by Wanda Pilis, Recording Secretary HOLTZ, FREDERICK 2145 OH JABLONSKI, MARK ALLEN 23 MI Results of Polish Presidential Election: Run-Off July 4 JACKIEWICZ, SOPHIE 179 IL By Robert Strybel, Our Warsaw Correspondent JARCO, IRENE 631 NY Warsaw - Bronislaw Komorowski, the candidate of the pro-business (PO) group, won JUNG, RICHARD 540 NY 41.54% of the vote in the first round of Poland's presidential election. His main rival Jaroslaw Kaczynski, KAROLKIEWICZ, HENRY 713 & 1070 MA representing the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, came in second with the backing of 36.46% of KENNEDY, HELEN 950 NY the voters. Under Poland's election law, a candidate must win more than 50% of the vote to become KISZKA, JULIA 950 NY president. As a result the top two contenders will face each other in a run-off selection set for July 4th. KUBRILUS, MARY 2010 PA The vote followed an unusually short election campaign conducted in the shadow of disaster. LUBARSKI, DR. STANLEY 343 PA President Lech Kaczynski, Jaroslaw's twin brother, First Lady Maria Kaczynska and 94 other people, MARRON, ROSALIE 1175 NJ mainly prominent political, military, and religious figures as well as war veterans died in a plane crash in MIENTUS, ALBERT 880 IL Smolensk, Russia while en route to a commemoration of the Katyn Forest Massacre. OWENS, AGNES 2100 OH Under Polish law, Kaczynski’s death forced the early election made Marshal (parliamentary PERES, JOSEPHINE 413 IN speaker) Komorowski the acting president. He had earlier been nominated as the PO's presidential candidate. The campaign was further compounded by Poland’s worst flooding since 1997. The deluge PLODZIEN, RAYMOND 450 MO that caused the most devastation in southern Poland claimed at least two dozen lives and left thousands PORADZISZ, JAMES 308 IL homeless, as flood waters inundated more than 2,100 localities. PRZYWARA, HENRY 1000 IL Komorowski and Kaczynski led a field of 10 presidential candidates, most of whom garnered less RAGAN, FRED L 1000 OH than 3% of the vote. A true election surprise was the showing of young post-communist Grzegorz ROBAK, RAYMOND 718 MI Napieralski who received nearly 13.68% of the vote. Analysts see him as a king-maker in the second ROSOL, EUGENE 597 CT round, since his support can make or break either of the top two candidates. Behind-the-scenes bargaining RZEPKA, HELEN 718 MI with the front-runners for appointments or other concessions is likely. RZEPKA, MARY ANN 213 WV Polish voters in the US overwhelmingly cast their ballots for Jaroslaw Kaczynski who received 70% of SAMUL, HELEN 1366 NY the Polonian vote. Komorowski received 25% and Napieralski a mere 2.5%. Similar results were achieved in Canada. That stands in marked contrast to the results scored in Poland. SEGADA, REGINA 384 PA The Polonia-Poland contrast is quite typical, as the Diaspora is usually more traditional than people SLAVINSKY, ALBERT 907 NJ in the home country. In this case, the sympathy vote (following the Smolensk tragedy) was probably far SLESINSKI, EDITH 715 NY stronger in Polonia. The rejection of Napieralski by our staunchly anti-communist Polonia was not SOBOTA, DOROTHY 832 CT surprising. Although he advocates a market economy and a democratic form of government, his party's SOCHA, ANNA 413 IN communist-era roots disqualify him in most Polish-American eyes. And unlike the top two contenders, STYMERSKI, ANTHONY 1486 IL both devout Catholics in favor of family values, Napieralski's party supports such typical leftist causes as SZYMANSKI, MARTIN 572 NJ homosexual marriage, abortion on demand and banning religion from public space. PRCUA Illinois - Indiana Women’s Division Swieconka and District #9 Reunion

On Sunday, April 11, the Illinois - Indiana Women’s Division held its annual Swieconka, hosted by District 9 at the Carmelite Fathers Monastery in Munster, IN. The officers of District #9 are: National Director Elizabeth Grabowski, who chaired the event, President Paul Pawlowski, Elizabeth Sadus, Recording Secretary; Shirley Mudy, Treasurer and Stanley Mudy, Sergeant-at-Arms. This event was a combination of of celebrating 57 years of District #9, 42 years of District #9 Polish Language and Dance Schools, 37 years of St. Joseph the Worker Society #1579 (founder Casimer M. Pawlowski, husband of Supervisor Barbara Pawlowski), honoring our eldest and original founders - Lori Gorny, Chester Kmiec, Msgr. Joseph L. Mroczkowski - and in memory of our past officer and directors and members in District #9 who were the original the original founders of PRCUA District #9. The day began with a procession and Noon Mass, with included the PRCUA flag bearers James Robaczewski (D-7), John Frankowicz (D-8) and Paul A. Pawlowski (D-9), National and District officers, members, students of District 9’s St. Rafal Kalinowski Polish Language and Dance School, Wesoly Lud Polish Folk Dance Ensemble, Polish Highlanders and a church filled to capacity. Although it was a beautiful, sunny day, it was a very solemn time because the day before, the President and First Lady of Poland and 94 high ranking dignitaries perished in a place crash in Smolensk. Many Mass participants wore black armbands as a sign of mourning. The Polish flag was at half-mast and draped in black in honor of plane crash victims. It was a difficult time of silence and tears, as the group mourned together in prayer. Preparations for this event had been going on for 4 months. After Mass, 140 guests filled the banquet hall. Fr. Francis Czaicki blessed the food and everyone appreciated the Polish dinner. Instead of giving a dance performance, dancers from “Slask,” under the direction of choreographers Natalie Grabowski and Konrad Habina, and from “Wesoly Lud,” under the direction of Misia and Richard Jaminski, presented a program called “In Memoriam of the Victims” in which they sang traditional songs and recited appropriate poems. At 3 pm, everyone took part in Divine Mercy prayers, since it was also Divine Mercy Sunday, and then returned to the banquet hall for cake and coffee, which was served while donated prizes were raffled off. At 4 pm, the District #9 Family Reunion celebration continued. In attendance were former dancers and past students of District 9 PRCUA Calumet Region Polish Dance and Language School. Thanks go to Debbie Zanon, who was visiting from California, for coordinating the Reunion. Also thanks to Konrad Grabowski, Jerry and Grace Biestek for presenting a video of past and present District 9 activities. Past National Director of District 9, Ted Pawlowski, who resides in Las Vegas, NV, provided accordion music as entertainment with Polish songs and melodies. Poprawiny was enjoyed by all, followed by a raffle. District #9 would like to thank everyone who participated in this historic event. Your support has been our success. We love to carry on our Polish traditions, preserve our Polish heritage and support our youth. Submitted by District #9 Supervisor Barbara Pawlowski

(See additional photos on PRCUA website: derived from God. www.prcua.org.) Ralph Stempinski, Bowling Tournament Director Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a renowned Catholic presence on the American stage in the middle of the 20th century, said: “Democracy is based on the Divine Rights of Persons. Each person has a value because God made him, not because the State recognizes him.” “The day we adopt in our democracy the already widespread ideas of some American jurists that right and justice depend on convention and the spirit of the times, we shall write the death warrant of our independence. When we deny God as the foundation of our rights, we shall no longer have rights.” Archbishop Sheen’s position squares perfectly with the Declaration’s author, Thomas Jefferson, who insisted: “The God who gave us life, gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?” In the rhetoric characteristic of Archbishop Sheen: “There is no Ed Kapanowski with Committee members (l-r) Ernie such thing as saving democracy alone. Democracy is a branch, not a Jerry Nasiatka and Frank Nasiatka, Chairmen Pindzia, Patrick Kosowski and Dennis Churchvara root. The root of democracy is the recognition of the value of a person as a creature of God. To save democracy alone is like saving the false teeth of a drowning man.” “First save the man and you will save his teeth. First preserve belief in God as the source of rights and liberties and you will save democracy. But not vice versa.” Many think God must serve democracy. It is time to affirm the contrary. Instead of judging religion by its attitude toward democracy, we should judge democracy by its attitude toward religion. A Declaration of Independence, grounded in a radical dependence on God, demands a democracy obedient to a justice born of God and not of expediency, a democracy that gives equal Joe Ozog Jr., Dir. Joan Sylak, Dir. Barbara Toboy, (L-r) Paul Stempinski, Joe Stempinski, protection to all. Citizens freed from injustices are free to serve God. Dir. Bill Nowakowski, Pres. Wallace Ozog V.P. Anna Sokolowski and Mary Jane Robles Some teach that freedom of speech and freedom of press constitute the essence of democracy. They do not. They safeguard democracy. But George Washington said, “Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles.” The Fourth of July is a terrific time to celebrate the connection of religious principles and our national ethic. And to be reminded that it is our shared dependence on God that breathes continued life into our Declaration of President Wallace Ozog officially opening the tournament Secretary-Treasurer Joyce Szarowicz, Res.
