Dearly Departed PRCUA 70th Anniversary of the Outbreak of World War II Brothers WAS THE FIRST TO FIGHT and Sisters BY ROBERT STRYBEL, OUR CORRESPONDENT

The pre-war Polish Military Transit Depot MEMBER SOC. It was on September 1st, 1939, at BASEY, MICHAEL 105 KS precisely 4:45 a.m. that the German battleship BISHOP, DOROTHY 1423 WI Schleswig-Holstein, allegedly paying a “courtesy BOCHENEK, WALTER 317 IL visit” to the then largely German-controlled Free BOGACZ, THERESA 593 IL City of Gdansk (Danzig), opened fire on the Polish BOGUCKI, JADWIGA 2002 PA depot, thereby launching the bloodiest war in BRONIAK, HELEN 87 MI human history. A slide show showing 41 years of dancers was presented, along with a display of beautiful artifacts and photographs in the lobby. Dignitaries in the audience included District 5 National Director Joan Sylak and District 10 National Director Tom Lisiecki, who were treated to a performance of Polish song and dances. A four-piece Podlasie - Dania Gniada, Alyson Krajewski., kapala consisting of: accordionist, Randy Krajewski; and Grace Rutkowski Echoes of Poland Ensemble bassist, Kevin Hermes; clarinetist, Jeanne Mc Ginnis; and violinist, Rev. The hosts for the program were: Rob Wiercinski from WSPD Television, and Barbara Toboy, PRCUA National Director, District 10. The Children’s Ensemble performed dances from the regions of: Cieszyn, Lublin, Przepioreczka, Tramblanka-Opoczno Polka, Zabawy Dziecice, and Krakowiak. Our vocal soloists were: Robert Szczublewski, Maria Szkudlarek, and Lidia Ebersole. Rob performed Kraj Rodzinny and Gorlu czy ci nie zal then Rob and Maria performed To i Hola. Rob also performed a duet with Lidia Pod Borem and Szla Dzieweczka. This year we had a special treat - a trumpter - Justin Martyniak-Rhoades, who performed Hejnal Krakowski and also in Tance Mieszczanskie-Zywieckie. Walter and Teresa Gibala came on stage to help the Ensemble with Lajkonik, which gave a new dimension to the performance. Both of the Ensembles finished with a Lajkonik finale and received a standing ovation from the audience. The Echoes of Poland are directed and choreographed by Paulina Tul Ortyl. Mrs. Ortyl founded the Ensemble 41 years ago when asked to prepare a group of young people to perform a Polish Christmas celebration. From the adult Ensemble, the Children’s Ensemble was added, and the Kapala. Kaszuby The Echoes spend a great part of the year performing; this summer was no exception. The Ensemble performed in July at the Lagrange Street Polish Festival. August sent the Ensemble to various festivals, then back to Wyandotte, MI for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s Church Festival. The Echoes have traveled and participated in festivals in Los Angeles and San Francisco CA, throughout the Midwest and Canada and the Triennial Folk Festival in Rzeszow, Poland where in 1980, the ensemble won the highest honor for authentically portraying Folk Culture in the Dozynski- the Polish Harvest Celebration. Thanks for a great performance and wonderful afternoon of song and dance and a little taste of home. Sto Lat to Paulina Ortyl and The Echoes!!
