N RECENT YEARS systematic theologians have been showing increased I interest in studying the doctrine of the Trinity. An integral part of that study should be an exposition of the origins of the doctrine. The question of origins can be posed in an analytical fashion, as Maurice Wiles has done: .. .we seem forced to choose between three possibilities: either (1) we do after all know about the Trinity through a revelation in the form of propositions concerning the inner mysteries of the Godhead; or (2) there is an inherent threefoldness about every act of God's revelation, which requires us to think in trinitarian terms of the nature of God, even though we cannot speak of the different persons of the Trinity being responsible for specific facets of God's revelation; or (3) our Trinity of revelation is an arbitrary analysis of the activity of God, which though of value in Christian thought and devotion is not of essential significance.1 I think that this analytical approach is in important respects secondary to the genetic one. The first Christians spoke about God in the terms which we now try to analyze; surely the reasons why they used those terms are most relevant to a sound analysis. The main words whose usage needs to be fathomed are the Greek words prosöpon, hypostasis, ousia, andphysis.2 Prosöpon is the earliest of these terms to have attained an accepted conventional usage in early Christian speech about God, and therefore the chief determinant of the shape which the complex of terms was to take. -

Persons so authorized shall only preach in congregations under the direction of the Member of Clergy or other leader exercising oversight of the congregation or other community of faith. Discernment Candidates considering the ministry of Preacher should confer with sponsoring clergy, spiritual directors, or other vocational guides to discuss honestly how to test a call, as well as the practicalities of the preaching ministry. During the period of discernment, candidates should familiarize themselves with various theologies and theories of preaching, so that their models of preaching are not limited by the examples they have observed in their immediate context. Some resources to aid in discernment are listed at the end of this document. It is not necessary to purchase and read all the resources on this extensive list in order to become licensed. Start with the basics and use the resource list for your continuing education and skill building in this ministry. Abstract Preacher-As-Witness
ABSTRACT PREACHER-AS-WITNESS: THE HOMILETICAL APPROACH OF E. STANLEY JONES by Luke Molberg Pederson Witness is a key metaphor that addresses postmodern yearning for authenticity and integrity in preaching in the current cultural milieu of the United States and Canada. The speaking and writing of twentieth-century world missionary and evangelist E. Stanley Jones provided a bountiful source of autobiographical material through which to explore Jones’ self- understanding as preacher-as-witness. The purpose of the study was to describe Jones’ homiletical self-understanding as witness to Jesus Christ, analyze the content of his speaking and writing as it pertains to preaching, and outline his sermonic approach. Jones’ underlying homiletical worldview was probed in its natural context through a grounded theory process of simultaneous data collection, analysis, and synthesis. All of Jones’ twenty-seven published books were scrutinized as well as ten selected sermons in print and in audio and videotape formats spanning sixty years of Jones’ preaching ministry. Samples of my own preaching were appended as examples of the integration of Jones’ approach with postmodern praxis. The focus of the study was not on others’ assessment of Jones, or critical evaluation of his preaching, but on his self- understanding as witness to Jesus Christ as a means to inform the present opportunity for preaching in a postmodern context. The study clarified boundaries between the metaphors of testimony, confession, and witness, offered an extension of Thomas G. Long’s work on the witness of preaching as an underappreciated metaphor for preaching, and presented witness as a theoretical bridge between speaker-driven and audience-driven polarities in preaching. -

Since as early as 230 A.D., Chrisans referred to Mary as theotokos, which means “God- bearer”. By the fih century, there were some people who quesoned this tle, claiming that Mary was only the mother of Jesus’ human nature. The bishops gathered at the Council of Ephesus (431 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.) taught definively that Christ is fully God and human and that these two natures are united in one person, Jesus Christ. Therefore, Mary could be called “Mother of God” because she gave birth to Jesus, who is fully divine as well as human. PRAY FOR OUR BISHOPS Pope Francis has encouraged the Bishops of the United States to make a silent retreat together as part of the spiritual renewal needed in the face of the abuse crisis. -

Church must take sin seriously but stress God’s mercy VATICAN CITY – The Catholic Church must take sin seriously, but it must do so like Jesus did, by emphasizing God’s mercy and trust in the sinner’s ability to change, said the preacher of the papal household. In criticizing the Pharisees, “Jesus does not deny that sin and sinners exist,” said Capuchin Father Raniero Cantalamessa, offering a Lenten reflection March 30 to Pope Benedict XVI and top Vatican officials. But Jesus “was more severe” toward those who “condemned the sinners than toward the sinners themselves,” the preacher said. From the evidence in the Bible, Father Cantalamessa said, “being merciful appears to be an essential aspect of being in ‘the image and likeness of God.” Mercy is the form God’s love takes in relation to sinners, he said. “After we have experienced it, we must demonstrate it to our brothers and sisters, both on the level of the church community as well as on a personal level,” the Capuchin said. Jesus does not trivialize sin, “but finds a way not to alienate sinners, instead attracting them to himself. He does not see only what they are, but what they can become if divine mercy reaches the depths of their misery and desperation,” he said. Jesus “does not wait for them to come to him; often he is the one who goes out looking for them,” the priest said. “Jesus is firm and rigorous regarding principles, but he knows when a principle must give way to the superior principle, which is the mercy of God and the salvation of a person,” he said.
