The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Pastor’s Notes December 30, 2018

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD Tuesday, January 1, the Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under her tle: Mary, Mother of God (a holy day of obligaon: Mass on December 31 at 4:00 pm and January 1 at 9:00 am and 11:00 am). Since as early as 230 A.D., Chrisans referred to Mary as theotokos, which means “God- bearer”. By the fih century, there were some people who quesoned this tle, claiming that Mary was only the mother of Jesus’ human nature. The bishops gathered at the Council of Ephesus (431 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.) taught definively that Christ is fully God and human and that these two natures are united in one person, Jesus Christ. Therefore, Mary could be called “Mother of God” because she gave birth to Jesus, who is fully divine as well as human.

PRAY FOR OUR BISHOPS Francis has encouraged the Bishops of the United States to make a silent retreat together as part of the spiritual renewal needed in the face of the abuse crisis. Cardinal Cupich has arranged for the retreat to take place at Mundelein Seminary on January 2-8. Over 200 bishops are expected to spend the days in prayer with two conferences each day presented by Father Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap. Please join me in prayer for our bishops each day of this week and also pray for those who have been vicms of abuse. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to bring healing light into the darkness of this crisis.

EXPLORING THE PRIESTHOOD Our Church is taking a number of steps to improve our vitality as a community of disciples. An important part of the life and health of the Church is having good priests along with consecrated men and women. Mundelein Seminary is hosing an “Exploring Priest Weekend” for men who are interested in learning more about becoming a Catholic priest. The next weekends are January 18- 20 and March 15-17. Please contact Father Tim Monahan, our Vocaon Director, at 312.534.8298 ([email protected]) for more informaon.

THE WINDOWS You may have noced that another stained glass window has been installed in our church on December 18. Located on the north side, the window depicts the Virgin Mary and her mother St. Anne. The window, along with the other windows on the walls of our church, were made in Austria in the 1930’s and originally were part of St. Church in Chicago (now closed). We have now used every window from St. Peter Canisius, and yet we sll have three clear windows in our church to be filled. Now what shall we do? I’ll share some thoughts on this in next week’s bullen.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!
